About the Author

David Abramczyk was born in Chicago, growing up in Saint Charles, Illinois. He began his education at Colorado State University studying Wildlife & Fisheries Biology. After answering an advertisement in a newspaper, David arrived in Nepal to study Nepali language, culture and history, a decision that prompted him to dramatically change his direction in life as he become fascinated with all aspects of the Orient. Lured by quick money and adventure, he traveled to Alaska in the summer of 1990 to work on a salmon fishing boat. Over the next six years he became increasingly involved in commercial fishing. In 1992 David transferred to University of Colorado at Boulder as a Chinese Language and Literature major. This offered the opportunity to study with an affiliated study abroad program at the University of Nanjing in Nanjing, China. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Boulder in the spring of 1995. His knowledge of the region and his fluency in Nepali allowed David to work as a guide specializing in mountaineering, white-water rafting and kayaking. When not guiding David went exploring and mapping out relatively untouched trekking routes in the far reaches of Nepal, often alone. David is a passionate sailor who has completed several trans-Atlantic and Pacific crossings. He has professionally captained numerous boats in several regions of the world. David currently resides in Europe, focusing on writing and mountaineering, and is in training for a summit attempt of another 8000-meter peak.

Full dislcosure: I am friends with the author David Ambramczyk. David has politely and gently encouraged his friends, myself included, to read his book Samsara and write a review if so inclined. So here I am and I am very inclined. In fact, I loved Samsara. The characters are colourful, the story is unique and exciting and the setting is exotic and mysterious. If this makes it sound like a light breezy 'cafe' read then my description does not do it justice. There is an underlying feeling of authenticity and dirtiness to the story that makes me wonder who the main character Jupiter was based on. I have never been to Nepal but I feel like I have seen the magnificent mountain passes and people through the eyes of a foreigner. This leaves me hanging and wanting to know more of the history and struggles that the book touches upon. The author is clearly very talented and I sincerely hope he writes a sequel or another novel soon.

To pick up a book and trust that an author’s adventure may teach you something along the way is quite an understatement... I was transported into a land and culture I know a little about yet felt as if I was experiencing it first-hand. The descriptive writing style engaged all my senses so much so that at times I even felt physical sensations. The wide use and mix of international language and local slang made each character spring to life. A fast-paced journey of historical facts sprinkled over convincing characters and breathtaking scenery. Samsara is real page turner, and one I would happily recommend. Looking forward to reading Abramczyk’s next one...

Samsara shines with exotic travels, poignant characters, and tragic humor. Abramczyk's debut novel is for all those interested in the adventure of finding oneself. I enjoyed this novel greatly. I love to read stories from the perspective of a “fly on the wall” with a special portal into the mind of the protagonist.This fantastic story seems to have been written with a nod to the familiar ingredients used by other great authors – Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Burroughs and Thompson come to mind. Abramczyk takes these ingredients and delivers his own fantastic brew.The dynamic between Jupiter, Maya and Jack is at the core of the novel. Abramczyk’s gift for dialog and describing human interactions would have created a great story located anywhere in the world; however, the fact that their story takes place in Nepal allows Abramczyk to share his incredible knowledge of a very special part of this planet.

Samsara: Simply said, I just love this book! This thrilling mix of Fear and Loathing in the Himalayas, Shantaram and The Snow Leopard draws you deep into the mysteries of Nepal and Tibet. I joined author David Abramczyk on a recent mountaineering expedition of Makalu, 5th highest mountain in the world. We enjoyed one another’s company, climbing together on several occasions, and I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of his amazing debut novel.I dove into Samsara on a subsequent voyage into the Arctic Circle under the light of the midnight sun. Days of breath-taking landscape past by unnoticed as I got hooked on Samsara after the first few pages! The adventure transports you from the dirty underworld of France to the noisy backstreets of Kathmandu and then shifts into the rugged terrain of Far Western Nepal, a pristine isolated region of the Himalayas.Having experienced the magic of these mountains on many occasions, I wanted to follow the protagonist Jupiter and his motley crew on their odyssey as deep-hidden secrets became unlocked and climb that final mountain pass into the great unknown. Samara instantly brings back the vibrant atmosphere of Nepal and touches on a dark chapter of the Cold War during which Tibetan guerillas were covertly trained by the CIA to fight against Chinese occupation. Ultimately Jupiter escapes his repressed past and finds his redemption in the remotest corner in the world – reverberating an eternal theme of human existence. I would suggest this book to anybody who wants to join an unforgettable adventure in the Himalayas and look forward to the release of Samsara, the movie!

What an amazing book! I found myself immediately transported into the vivid world of Samsara: the sights, smells, culture, people and places. The characters suck you into an enticing existentialist vortex that you can't help but be enthralled. I was left wondering how many of their encounters were derived from Abramczyk's own personal experiences and how many were a creation of his imagination, which demonstrated extraordinary skill and is the mark of a good writer.This book has it all: love, loss, regret, smuggling, revolution, war, death, spirituality, culture and the sad yet true tale the Tibetan Freedom Fighters. Interwoven through all of this, Samsara illustrates man's inability to comprehend the cause/effect of karmic retribution, but ultimately emphasizes through love and redemption how we can overcome obstacles. Samsara is without question one of my top five books about the Himalayan region. I highly recommend this novel for anyone interested in travel and adventure.

Circumnavigating drug culture and the mystery of cultural taboos with innocence and honesty, Samsara follows lost and tormented souls on their path to freedom. A mix between Burroughs and Krackouer, and as viewed through the lens of a matured Generation X'er, the mood is generally light, briefly scrapes the darkness, then bubbles back up to engage in conversation and reach greater heights. Abramczyk creates an intriguing plot, with identifiable characters and an appealing environment. Samsara is a must read (4.5 stars).

I have been reading Matthew Reilly for quite a few years now, having been a fan of much of his early works since Ice Station and Amazon. The book features SCARECROW, a tough-as-nails ex-Special Forces soldier with a talent for attracting hard-core action and finding himself immersed in impossible cliffhanger situations that only the SCARECROW can figure out the way to survive...and its usually facing the enemy head-on, with action that is teaming with high-speed chases, gun battles, explosions, fights, and hang-on-to-the-seat-of-your-pants action that keeps the pages turning. That's exactly what you get with ARMY OF THIEVES.As a rogue terrorist group has seized a remote island left over from the Cold War, with a plan to release a destructive weapon into the atmosphere that would spell certain doom for the Western hemisphere, it is up to Schofield and his small force of freedom fighters to act fast and save the world from certain destruction. One of the strengths of this book is, it digs deeper into Schofields character and gives the reader more in-depth information about the SCARECROW, what has moulded him into the hard-ass hero that he is. There are also some very "uncomfortable" scenes involving "rat torture" that may have readers skimming through the scene quickly just to get through it. If anything, the book sets out to do exactly what it is intended for: a pure adrenaline rush with fast-paced entertainment for the die-hard action fan.I would recommend you tackle some of the earlier books such as SCARECROW and THE FIVE GREATEST WARRIORS before picking up this one. But, if you are in an airport or the bookstore and you happen to come across this and nothing else, you can certainly enjoy it without reading the previous books. Matt Reilly's books are like a comic book roller coaster: impossibly fast-paced, & wildly entertaining. They're not intended to be taken seriously; they are, instead, intended to give the reader a good time. I've never yet read one of his books that failed to delight, & this one is no exception.Explosive action, hilarious lines & scenes, a heroic effort to save the world -- all of that, & much, much more, is found between these two covers. The first review on this page says it better than me, but I just want to add in one little observation. This book is riddled with events that will make you say "No effin' WAY" & if it's your first ever Reilly, you might not want to even finish it the first time one of those lunatic events happens, but all you need do is simply suspend disbelief, accept that Shane Scofield did the utterly impossible, & drive on. This is especially true of the near-climax, when what happens to Scofield & his friends is so far beyond belief that its turns back around & becomes believable again. Because, after everything else Scofield & Company have done, nothing else is impossible.IMO, if this book isn't turned into a movie VERY FREEKIN' SOON, than Hollywood is more of a lost cause than I'd previously feared.A couple of caveats, tho. Matt Reilly seems to have a significant "hard on" against the American CIA, & IMO, he simply does not understand Americans. In particular, one conversation, between Our Hero & a SEAL Team officer, I think would never have happened the way he depicts it. But Reilly has been called on these things before, & his explanations have seemed fair enough to me; he doesn't "hate" Americans, he just thinks that because America is the 800-pound gorilla of international affairs, that it's perfectly possible for some Americans to be nefarious "bad guys" with nefarious, anti-American intent. In this particular novel, nothing could be further from the truth. But despite their actual pro-American intent, they're STILL bad guys, & it's exceedingly pleasing to see the ways Scofield puts them down.I can't freekin' wait for Reilly's next circus.

This is the latest in Matthew Reilley's series about the character Scarecrow. Fans of the series know already that when Mr Riley writes a book, you want to clear your calendar for the day and stockpile lots of fast food - because fast is the very essence of these books. The action scenes are extraordinarily imaginative and fast-paced, and there is little time wasted on dialogue. What character development exists is usually measured in bullets spent or explosions rendered. These books typically read like a pinball machine going crazy at full speed. If somebody tried to make a movie of these books, people would say "no way they can do that stunt!". This latest finds Scarecrow and team on a supposedly restive routine mission shepherding some research geeks, the easy mission as a respite from previous arduous adventures. However, Fate drops a World-ending situation at their feet, and they have to respond in true Scarecrow fashion - fast, lots of destruction, narrow escapes, and unbelievably imaginative scenarios. I strongly urge readers to start with the first books and work forward to the latest in order to fully understand the background story of Scarecrow and his associates. Each of the books is a thrill-ride just like the last. You will not regret the purchase. For additional non-stop action of a more archeological kind, check out Mr Reilley's amazing series featuring Jack West, Jr , starting with "Seven Deadly Wonders". I cannot say enough good things about these books. Get them now!

I liked this audiobook but it was bit of a disappointment after absolutely loving the first two books in the series. This was a re-read for me but I actually didn't remember anything about it from my initial read years ago. I am actually pretty sure that this is the book that I stopped on when I started the series the first time. It was a good book but it wasn't anywhere near as entertaining as the first two in the series were for me.This book started out really strong with Rachel having to deal with Big Al. Things looked pretty bad for her and I had no idea how she was going to outsmart him. She ends up getting a bit of help from his familiar and a werewolf insurance agent. It was a close call for Rachel and while she is trying to recover a secret slips out and Jenks ends up mad...and leaves. I missed Jenks constant presence in this book.This book really seemed a bit more focused on the character relationships. I can't say that I really liked all of the developments in this installment. Nick can't handle being near Rachel so he leaves town. Rachel starts dating Kisten and while they have chemistry it seemed to happen way too fast. Ivy is having her own struggles with Piscary and staying in control. Jenks needs some time away to cool down. This felt like more of a transitional book that may be laying the framework for future books.I did enjoy the narration in this audiobook. Marguerite Gavin is really the perfect narrator for this series. She is Rachel in my mind but she also performs all of the different voices very well. I never have any trouble understanding who is speaking and her delivery really keeps my focus on the story.I would recommend this book to others. This is the third book in the series and I really do think that this series needs to be read in order since everything builds from the earlier books. Readers who try to read this as a stand alone will most likely be quite lost. I am looking forward to starting the next audiobook in this series very soon!

Don't let other reviewers compare her to Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake, since I no longer read that series since Anita became a sex sucking demon, I gave up hoping she'd get back to ass kicking. Now there's little miss Rachel, getting good at recovering from severe ass kickings, slapped around by bigger and badder bad guys, every few chapters.I won't read a story where the lead doesn't learn and improve.I'm giving this one more book.Why? Because the writer usually gives up on the character after a few books anyway, why should I pay for apathy? If Rachel gets slapped in the face ONE MORE TIME! I'm done here too.

Looking for a romance with some action and fantasy thrown in? This series is for you. Looking for some quality fantasy and action with less focus on romance? I'd look elsewhere. Technically, the writing was fine, but the content had me skimming, and was not all that engaging to read. The description of magic and whatnot was nebulous and vague feeling, and the main heroine seemed to be frustratingly helpless, yet strangely powerful, all at the same time.She escapes seemingly hopeless situations on small technicalities, not due to any skill of her own, and that gets somewhat blase over the course of the series. Most of the detail was given to relationships and romance, with less attention given to the magic and action. Not my cup of tea, but a ok read for someone who is interested in this kind of stuff. If you are looking for a more action/magic oriented urban fantasy series, I would recommend the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Every Which Way but Dead is an apt title for this book, because Rachel will do almost anything in order to make sure she’ll be alive when all is said and done. She has some very big players to go up against now, though, and she especially has to be very cunning in her dealings with her favorite demon, Al.My review of Every Which Way but Dead is spoiler free, but there might be spoilers from the first two books in it. Especially because the plot is moving forward pretty quickly, and I want to make sure I touch on all the things that were important to me while reading. So if you’re even later than me to The Hollows series, continue to read if you don’t mind knowing some of what has happened in the first two books.From the beginning of Every Which Way but Dead, Nick is very distant, and he seems to become more distant with each interaction between him and Rachel. I love getting to know Ivy, Jenks and Rachel better, and the way they interact is great. Of course, because Rachel has trust-issues, things don’t go as she hoped when someone finds out the hard way that Rachel hasn’t been completely honest with them. And I am left thinking that maybe some relationships cannot be mended at all. New characters arriving might also cause trouble for Rachel, especially when she realizes the depth of the relationship some of those have with the people who are close to her.

It's been about ten years and they are still fast paced exciting stories which keep pulling me on at a high consumption rate. Gr 1-4–Readers accustomed to stories of enslaved African Americans trying to reach Canada and freedom may be surprised to learn that slavery was legal there until 1834. Although the laws were not as restrictive as those in parts of the United States, many African-Canadians faced discrimination well into the 20th century. In 1946, Desmond was a successful businesswoman. On her way from Halifax to a meeting in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, her car broke down. Since the repairs would take several hours, she decided to go to a movie while she waited. She purchased a ticket and took a seat on the main floor of the theater. An usher told her she had to move to the balcony. When Desmond refused, she was forcibly removed by the police and spent the night in jail. While segregation was not technically legal, it was enforced by custom. Although the story is serious, the picture-book format and rhythmic text that mimics oral speech patterns will be inviting to a wide range of readers. The acrylic paintings portray Desmond as well dressed and professional, and the bold colors reflect her strength of will. Varying perspectives heighten the emotional intensity, as do the excellent layout and design. But she, like a prominent female bus rider, refused to give up her seat and was jailed. This incident is notable for its location: Nova Scotia. Viola Desmond was the Canadian Rosa Parks. This is an excellent new picture book biography about Canadian Civil Rights pioneer Viola Desmond. Like her better-known counterpart Rosa Parks, Viola refused to give up her seat--but in this case in a segregated movie theatre in 1946 Nova Scotia, rather than a city bus in 1955 Montgomery.The story is told in a folksy, oral-history tradition, with the narrator speaking directly to the audience, drawing us into this compelling story of racism and courage. Viola, owner of a beauty salon, is forced to stop in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia when her car breaks down. To pass the time, she decides to stop at the local movie theatre. She finds the perfect seat, down in front, and before she can settle in to enjoy the movie, an usher tells her she has to go to the balcony. When she refuses, "They took Viola to jail. Can you believe it?" After being fined $20 (a lot of money back then) for "refusing to pay the proper ticket price," she was released. The judge wouldn't listen when she said she was happy to pay for a downstairs ticket.Viola and black community groups decided not to put up with this segregationist treatment, and appealed her case. Although the appeal was unsuccessful, the author points out that Viola's fight galvanized the fight against segregation in Canada, which was outlawed in the late 1950's.Viola Desmond Won't Be Budged! is the first book of Jody Nyasha Warner, a writer, editor, and former librarian who is particularly interested in African Canadian history. Even though Viola offered to pay the extra amount for a ground floor seat, she was still arrested for refusing to sit in the balcony section for blacks. Viola spent a night in jail, her case went all the way to Nova Scotia's Supreme Court, and she became known as Canada's first civil rights activist. This carefully-researched book provides young learners with an informative look at racial segregation in Canada and a pivotal event in the civil rights movement. Interestingly, the book's 2010 publication coincided with a formal apology from Nova Scotia's government and a pardon of the charge against her, the first posthumous free pardon ever granted in Canada. The book arrived about 5 days after I ordered it and I love it. Aside from the in depth text, they offer great chapter review questions straight from the AMT exam. Great for anyone studying medical lab assisting even medical technologist.

Being 44 and going back to school I was pretty nervous about writing research papers. This book helped me greatly, and what was most surprising is how readable it is. Instead of very dry prose, I found it to be informative and entertaining.It helped me greatly and my first grade on my Masters level research paper was 99%.I would recommend it to all new students and if I ever reach my goal of becoming an adjunct professor I am definitely going to recommend it to my students.

I have not used the complete book as yet. As the author suggest I found the areas I needed for a quick fix. I am now in the process of studying the book in depth and find it very helpful. I hope this fall when I go back to school that I will not need the librarian help that I have used in the past. I purchased it on my kindle and wish that I had a hard copy to mark the pages that I need.

Going to college soon and it's been a while since I was in school and done research papers. This book is great! I recommend it to anyone who needs help with research papers or just a refresher course. Easy read.

Writing research papers is hard. I'm not a beginner, but this book gives really good tips that can be used by anyone looking to work a little better. I strongly recommend this book unless you are writing your Master's thesis and then you already know what you have to do.

This book provides a step by step description for writing a research paper. What I liked best is the chapter on writing a thesis statement. This is a difficult thing to teach and to learn. Great suggestions for anyone doing research OR teaching research.

This book is written in a manner that all can understand. I suppose the title "...for dummies" says it all but I just had to point that out. It hits the major points of writing and is a useful additional resource that can help anyone who is in need of a little extra assistance in writing an academic paper.

I must say this is a very useful for an international PhD student, maybe even for any student who's gonna write some papers in English. (Whaaaaat)
