All of the chapters are equally engaging—for example, one of them considers the nature of “the gift” and the dynamic of reciprocity implicit in gift-giving. Why not apply that same human expectation to those who benefit from the creation of value from financial speculation using derivatives?This book necessarily is a first step, though a brilliant one. What happens when the rest of us get to know what these scholars know? How do we talk about it in terms we all understand? Depending on what I'm cooking, have been using this book as a reference guide. This time I was grilling a pork dish. Alas, the page with the pork rub was machine cut from the book. After failing to find the required page, sure enough there were other pages missing too. Not to disrespect Paul Kirk; but, I really don't want this book anymore. With regards to the pages that I do have, the book is strictly for reference only. It is difficult to really get ideas from just flipping through the pages. Best to know what you are going to cook and then just glance through this to see about kicking it up a notch.

This book could pass as an old classic or as a new one. You can sense that this book was not made by a chef gathering recipes and making a book out of it. There is great wisdome in Paul's recipes and the ones he borrows are also solid. Very, very few bbq books are as good in recipes as Kirk's. Probably none.

This glorious paperback is a once-in-a-decade event in the world of cookbooks: somone who genuinely understands his subject clearly and succinctly explains it in a way that is easy for anyone to understand, even complete novices.Several times, the author uses the term "master class". This term is usually reserved when an acknowledged master of the subject decides to transfer his skills and abilities to others via a special class. At first, I thought that the use of this term was a little overblown. How wrong I was.He goes through these subjects: ingredients, rubs, marinades, mops, sauces, and other (salsa, relish, ketchup). Each subject is expertly covered, and tells you everything you need to know. He explains the principle and structure of each one, and then gives instructions on how to create it for yourself. Recipes are then presented for those who do not wish to do the experiments on their own. My only complaint is the table of contents: more detail would be a great help.This book is the only one you really need when it comes to barcecue sauces. If you don't already have it, I suggest you get it and throw away the other barbecue books you have.

I recently got this book, haven't finished reading it yet but I've already learned a lot. He has some really great information and pointers, and a lot of knowledge on the ingredients and how they should be used. The thing that I really like is that he teaches you how to develop your own rubs, marinades and sauces along with providing many recipes. Rubs for example he shows a chart of ingredients for several different rubs so you can see the common ingredients and what makes them different.The book is written with a real culinary backbone,which isn't surprising considering he teaches classes on BBQ, This would be the book that would accompany that class. he uses many definitions right from the dictionary. The recipes are easy to read, follow, and are very clear. Some recipes may be a little advanced for people new to this, but overall are not difficult. Today I smoked some chicken wings and used a baste in the book and a BBQ sauce. Both were easy to make and I already had almost all the ingredients in the kitchen, AND they turned out GREAT!The only section that has techniques for smoking is the introduction, so if that's what you're looking for I wouldn't recommend this book, for that I recommend "backyard BBQ" by Richard W. McPeake. Backyard BBQ: The Art of Smokology He goes into great detail on preparing meat, smoking/brining times,and temperatures. That's the book I turn to for that information, and also has some great recipes. "championship BBQ Sauces" is great for all the things you need to kick up your BBQ. Really great marinades/bastes, rubs, sauces, mustards, relishes, salsas, flavored oils and vinegars. There's also a helpful section for measurement conversions, and a quantity guide to tell you how much rub, marinade, or sauce you need for given amounts of meat.To sum it up, this book is a MUST HAVE if you are into BBQ. Like I said there are other books that teach technique, this gives you everything you need for recipes and gives you all the tools you need to develop your own great recipes. I've been looking for this book for a long time and have finally found it!

Paul Kirk is the "Baron of BBQ" and if you study this book you will follow his footsteps and develop your own BBQ winning rubs and sauces and more. Study, not just read this book is my suggestion, its a training manual but a good read also, and it will never be outdated. A primer for serious barbecue.This is my third copy of his book because i wore out the others.This book can be priceless if you want to bring your bbq skills to a competition level.

I did enjoy this book it gives some good pointers for how to develop a rub or sauce, It had some great recipes as well, the couple I tried were good, I do not think it brought anything new to the table that I have not read in other books or online. For someone who has been smoking/ grilling awhile I do not know that it offers anything new or different. But with that in mind for someone starting to get into smoking or grilling it offers some good ideas for balancing flavor profiles, as well as creating your own signature rubs or sauces

I purchased this book on recommendations from others on this site and do not regret it at all! I have made several sauces and rubs and they are outstanding! I also had to go and purchase many of the ingredients that I did not have which took a while and at 5 different stores. I went through the book and made a list and after spending over 100.00 I had a complete collection of items I never had or heard of! This is my first book I have ever purchased for BBQ and I do not regret it. I have had compliments that I never had before and I am finally enjoying BBQing!

It will be useful to anyone working with children--not just school psychologists.You will get definitions on terms so if you are already in the field, some of this may seem too basic. But it's never a bad thing to review the fundamentals. This is meant for all states so you won't find things that address your state should you need that.The best part for my husband (who is in this field) was the case studies. He felt it helped him see the information in real-life use.

I chose this book to read the chapter about ethical and legal issues of research in schools but found the entire book to be a well written and comprehensive resource. There is a substantial reference section as well as a Table of Cases. An overall great resource. My only request is that the chapter cases be either factious or from actual litigation. I was not a fan of mixing the cases. Otherwise, a solid resource for students and professionals.

I am approaching this book from the viewpoint of a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who has studied law and ethics for the state in which I am licensed already, but have not had specific training in ethics and law as they apply to school psychologist in particular. I was interested in this book mainly because I work with children and coordinate with professionals at schools. I wanted this book to fill in any gaps I may have in understanding laws in regards to working with schools. This book does a very good job of providing an overview of specific concerns and laws rather than more general concerns (which I have already learned). Some of the information overlaps with what most therapists/psychologists have already studied (e.g., Tarasoff, HIPAA), but more than enough of it is specific to dealing with school situations to make it worthwhile reading for those who aren't exclusively working in a school, but are working for children. I particularly appreciated those areas which appeared to be different when working in a school setting (e.g., differences in informed consent as compared to a more conventional therapeutic setting).This is a textbook, and they do start at square one defining terms and include comprehension questions at the end, so it's good for beginners and students as well as professionals who want to expand their knowledge into specific legal and ethical concerns for working in/with schools. It isn't going to help anyone pass the law and ethics tests for qualifying for licensure, however, as it is generalized for all of America and doesn't include state-specific information. I don't see this as a demerit of the book as it isn't promoted as being a licensure study aid. I'm just mentioning it FYI. I really liked the case studies that were included as they were a way of relating real world situations to the information that was included.In terms of weaknesses, I really didn't note any significant ones, though patient automony is over-referenced a lot. That being said, that is the case in all materials pertaining to law and ethics as it is a critical ethical consideration in treatment. In terms of strength, I think it is well-organized, beautifully referenced, and easy to read and follow. For professionals who plan to work with schools in any capacity, this is a solid textbook or primer.

I'm familiar with David's philosophy and style so it's not a surprise to read his insights on how to gain vision, see subject matter, and tell stories with photographs. But this is more of a summation of his overarching style of teaching through much of what I've read and it gives the reader a tool to escape from the complexities of the highly technological world of digital photography, or even film (as it has always been highly technical) and reassemble one's inner compass as a photographer to understand where you see 'true north' in your own understanding, or to possibly recalibrate a bit and thereby fix your mind on more satisfying efforts and gain some perspective along the way to making better and more meaningful photographs. For me, this is part of the evolutionary approach to gaining skill in a craft that ranges between utility and art and sometimes straddles both.

I have seen and heard David speak about photography online, on and off for a few years. I am impressed by his calm and collected approach and attitude toward the subject of creating (photographic) art. He approaches the subject from many angles, never proclaiming one idea, method, position to be superior or right compared to others. This is the sign of a mature mind ( and I didn't mean that in the derogatory sense ). So, this is my first purchase of any of his items, and I will say, I am impressed.He writes with both knowledge and passion and there is a lot to read, and just enough to look at. Each chapter is thought provoking if you let it be. Now that I have spent a few years mastering the craft of photography, it is clear to me that what is missing most of the time is my soul. This is a passion that is not to be entered into without a willingness to devote some time to thinking about what you want to portray, and put some energy into the elements necessary to create story, an image with a soul.Finally, on the book itself. David speaks eloquently about the images with his words, but there are in fact two other senses that only a printed book can deliver upon, and the Soul of the Camera delivers on those other senses very nicely. No iPad, no Kindle, no Instagram, 500px or whatever can deliver the two other sensory inputs the way a printed book can. First is touch. The feel of the paper, the weight, the smoothness and the texture of the ink upon the paper. Next is smell. A new printed book smells of the ink and the toil of the lithographer. This book smells and feels just as good as it looks and provides equal parts sensory input and cerebral stimulation.If you care about photography and the art of delivering a work of art to your ______ ( client, friend, family, wife, daughter, son, ... ) then you owe it to them to read this book, and to yourself to touch and smell it!

I felt like I was attending a motivational session, but that was OK. I liked the exposure of the chronological past of critical thinking, starting with the Socratic method. The contribution of Descartes in Rules for the Direction of the Mind was accredited, which advises us to grab on to the scientific method before accepting blindly what is thrown at us. At the same time, the author reminds the reader that reasoning and critical thinking are two processes -- the latter enhancing the former -- according to Immanuel Kant. Perhaps the most important message may be never to take anything at face value... question and investigate first. I would like to add that successful critical thinking requires a high level of emotional intelligence. BTW, this book may not be comfortable for the average reader... For it to be complete as a scientific product it requires a formal bibliography at the end.

So this book has indeed given me proven steps on how I can become a critical thinker. Very wise strategies that you can apply on a daily basis. You will also learn on how you can cultivate your skills to whatever goals or whatever difficulties you might have and it will be an advantage if you know how to make use of your critical thinking. I believe this book has helped me in many directions, one of them making wiser decisions. Very informative and would highly recommend to friends.

Decision making is really hard most especially when it needs or it involves a lot of things and individuals.A lot of probing is needed for a smart decision making. I like how this book written for it involves How critical thinking evolve over centuries in Chapter 2. It's history that we all must know. Critical thinking methodology can be applied on our daily lives. Good job to the author!

I want to learn how to think critically and become a critical thinker and a sharp arguer. I am interested in philosophy, because I am curious about the world, creationism, and everything, and philosophy answers many hard questions.I am took a course in Philosophy, because I want to improve my critical thinking skills. However, it somewhat failed in developing my critical thinking skills so I bought this book as I needed some advice on becoming a critical thinker.And this book has provided me with all the answers that I needed. It helped me understand how to become a critical thinker by first explaining what it really is. The book is more understandable that the short courses I have taken.

Sometimes we miss on judging skillfully that we end up making bad decisions which make our situation worse than better. Whenever we get involved in a situation no matter how simple it is, I believe critical thinking would really be a big help.Being rational is important as discussed in this book. I learned a lot about evaluating my own thinking by asking relevant qeustions and analyzing the situation not only by thinking about me but also about the people around me.I like that this book also talked about how critical thinking was applied during the old days and how helpful it was, my favorite part is when William graham noted about using critical thinking in our educational system. That was very interesting and I totally agree to what he said.I enjoyed reading this book and you would surely love it, too! Good read.

This book does a good job in explaining the history and methodology of critical thinking and why we need to be crtitical thinkers in today's world. From this book, I learned useful tips on thinking critically, such as asking proactive questions, acting as my own critic, being rational... A critical read for everybody!

To me this is the truest test of intelligence. Anyone can memorize facts or procedures to repetitive tasks and so forth.But it takes a truly wise person to think outside the box and be able to think critically in stressful situations or any situation that the ability to think clearly and wisely can be a huge advantage. The plus side is this can be learned and this book has simple straight forward steps to this process and I must admit I am seeing an improvement on my ability to think clearly through the noise. This is a recommend.
