"What is it about whales?" Leigh Chavez asks in "The Breath of Whales: The Science and Spirit of Pacific Ocean Giants," an account of her time as a naturalist, researcher and leader of whale watches. It's a question she does an excellent job of answering, even to readers who already love whales and grasp their magical appeal. In '98, the US Navy decided to test the impact of low frequency altitude sonar on whales near Maui, where the author happened to be stationed. Upon witnessing the bizarre and upsetting sight of several apparently orphaned calves, she notified the Navy but was stonewalled. Fearing that she would be dismissed as "unscientific," she kept quiet for several years before deciding to break her silence.Though this isn't a book where the central message is "such and such a traumatic event completely transformed my life perspective," the author does write movingly about a particular time in her life with this theme. In 2004, as the single mother of a young daughter, Chavez unexpectedly developed toxic shock from group B strep infection which made her recovery uncertain for a period of time. During her time recovering, her family and friends were careful to avoid telling her that a tanker had recently spilled oil into Puget Sound. Incidentally, this occurred on the three year anniversary of the discovery of an orphaned calf named Springer, whose plight drew much attention and prompted the forming of the Orphaned Orca Fund, which raised money and worked to transport the calf to where she was eventually accepted by a pod of whales, who had been orphans themselves. (Springer did, however, had to be weaned away from approaching boats and soliciting attention from their crews.)Chavez also describes such experiences as tracking data with other researchers for humpback whales in Hawaii, her quest to spot several species of beaked whales, and her volunteer position answering questions during the annual migration of gray whales off the Oregon coast. As she observed these creatures, she found much evidence that whales use problem solving skills and creativity in their daily lives such as when they prey on salmon hatcheries, as well as display altruistic behavior. Moreover they demonstrate the capacity to mourn, as the sight of a mother orca carrying her dead calf for several weeks in 2018 in the waters off British Columbia showed.Chavez writes with the same ability to evoke the whales' world as does naturalist Diane Ackerman (though with less flowery prose). She ends by describing advancements in how whales are viewed by the human race. More radically, as the author notes, in 2013, India banned captivity of whales after becoming the first nation to declare them "nonhuman persons," something I would have found unimaginable in the late eighties when I went on my first whale watch as a child. Included are photos (black and white in my Vine issued edition), identifying sketches, additional resources and a list of other works on whales.
I previously had read about Killer Whales, the ones in captivity. So when I saw this I thought, well now I can learn about whales in their true habitat. Leigh Calvez gives a documentary of her study of whales and of the things she learned about them, herself and our world.I enjoyed all of the stories and all of the facts about whales. One of the things that captured my interest was the description of how a mother whale cares for her child for a full year after birth. The gentleness of such a gigantic animal is truly amazing.I loved also learning how the whales are making a comeback in our seas. It is wonderful to find that they are growing in population numbers again. But it is intriguing that their areas of habitat are changing. Is this just a cycle that they go through or is it because of the encroachment of mankind?I hope you will learn as much as I did and find that you are inspired by these giants of the ocean.
I read this book cover-to-cover in one afternoon. It was informative without getting too technical, and heartwarming. It isn't really a biology book, or a "save the whales" manifesto, so if you're looking for that, keep browsing. This is a book about one woman's many encounters with whales in her work as a naturalist, teacher, and student of nature. Yes, you will get an understanding of some of the many dangers whales face in our crowded and noisy oceans, but she doesn't hammer on it. You get to make your own conclusions. It isn't political. The author shares her experiences aboard research vessels, working with students and teaching tourists about whales. You will feel the salt air, and best of all, you will get to know these wonderful, mysterious giants of the seas through the eyes of a person who has spent most of her adult life studying and learning and experiencing whales in the wild. It is a lovely read, great book club choice. Great for home-schooling.
Part science, some "save the whales" a little bit of a travelogue and a tint dash of personal reminisces. This is a wonderful book for those who love cetaceans- Dolphins, Whales, Porpoises.Leigh covers six species here, from the giant Blue to the tiny Spinner Dolphin.Full of wonderful sightings from her many trips as a scientist, naturalist and writer. Many "personal" notes about various marine mammals, like their rescue, etc.Very readable, fascinating. Illustrated with Photos and drawings.
I would highly recommend this book by Leigh Calvez as a good introduction to those who do not have much experience reading about whales and have often desired to learn more. Leigh Calvez does a great job of describing several different species of whale in a way that allows the book to be read at almost any chapter. I read the chapter about Orcas first, before heading back to the beginning of the book and it did not throw off the flow contained within the book. Unfortunately, with pollution and global warming on the rise in aquatic environments, there is a lot of sad and depressing information contained in this book as well which will hopefully spur us to taking more action where ever we can to reduce our footprint on this planet.
I found Leigh Calvez’s outlook and writing style to be very similar to that of Sy Montgomery. There is a mix of scientific observation and the author’s feelings about the animals she is observing and interacting with. Often, I prefer that, but there was a whiny tone to some of the writing that didn’t appeal to me. The Breath of a Whale is as much a memoir of Calvez’s time spent with and thinking about whales as it is about whales themselves. I do think that Calvez sometimes attributes her own outlook to that of the whales themselves. The book is a quick read. But that’s JustMe.
This is a great book, well researched and informative. Love the artsy/animal loving flavor.
