Review by Deb Rucinski“Christmas Surprise- Grayscale & Line Art Coloring Book”by Alena LazarevaPaperbackDimensions: 8.5 x 11 inchesBinding: Glue bound on leftPaper weight: MediumNon-perforated pagesSingle-sided illustrationsTwo full sets of 21 beautiful illustrationsSuitable for all agesAlena Lazareva is a popular artist and illustrator in the adult coloring community. Her art has been published in magazines and books in several countries. She illustrates both line art and grayscale images and has published many coloring books. Her main interests are fantasy art, mystical beings, fairies and mermaids.“Christmas Surprise” is a combination of line art and grayscale illustrations. Perfect for those that prefer one over another. In this book you get 2 full sets of 21 beautiful, detailed images. You can color again or share with a friend. The pictures all have clean lines. Grayscale images are not too dark, which enables them to be colored much easier and allows the detail to come through. There is a thin frame line and a small, white space border surrounding all illustrations to aid in easy removal with a pen knife, for coloring or framing. The covers are very pretty and the back shows smaller samples of the pictures included in this book. The illustrations are gorgeous and even though detailed, they have very few intricate areas, making this book fairly easy for those with vision and dexterity issues. Paper is medium weight, which is typical of most adult coloring books. You can use most coloring medium on it. If using markers, use some blotter pages to prevent bleed through to the next page. Use water sparingly to prevent paper buckling or damage when using wet medium like watercolors. Some wrinkling with water application is normal.Alena includes information about herself, copyright, social media links and several thumbnail images of the covers of her other books.

Nice I like that it has a grey scales and line art and 2 images of each, very nice

Love this Christmas theme coloring book. This book is designed to capture the spirit of Christmas. I love that the designs are so varied – there are Santas, snowflakes, children, fireplace, Christmas trees, elves, animals, owi, stockings, gifts, reindeers. I love the fact that there are 2 copies of each image so that you can go a different direction artistically. The images are printed on one side of the pages only, to give the best coloring experience. Coloring pencils work extremely well with this paper.

Review

“Gives readers a privileged peek into the storerooms, boardrooms, and curatorial offices of many storied institutions. In doing so, the book offers a scholarly snapshot of the role that museums have played throughout history, as well as the challenges they face today. Although students and interested laymen will undoubtedly gain much from Lubar’s comprehensive overview, even the most experienced museum professionals will likely learn a thing or two.”―Paul D. Brinkman, Science“Steven Lubar has written a wonderfully comprehensive and intriguing assessment of the impact and importance of museums by unearthing both the history of these cultural institutions and the contemporary challenges that face the field. Featuring an insider’s knowledge and a scholar’s curiosity, Inside the Lost Museum is a must-read for those who want to understand how museums shape America’s memories and its national identity.”―Lonnie G. Bunch III, Director, National Museum of African American History and Culture, Smithsonian Institution“In this volume, Steven Lubar, among the most thoughtful scholars and professionals in the field, turns ‘museum’ into a verb, taking us behind the scenes to show how collecting, exhibiting, and programming are conceived and organized. His clear, straightforward, and insightful account provides case studies as well as a larger framework for understanding museological practices, choices, historical trends, controversies, and possible futures. The treatment of art, science, and history museums and occupational roles from director and curator to exhibition designer and educator make this required reading for everyone in the museum field.”―Richard Kurin, Acting Provost and Under Secretary for Museums and Research, Smithsonian Institution“Inside the Lost Museum ably demonstrates that Steven Lubar is among the most perceptive historians thinking and writing about the American museum today. Equipped with intimate knowledge from years at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, Lubar connects the history of early museums to what currently transpires behind the scenes, as staff debate ideas for exhibitions, wrestle with ethical dilemmas, and attempt to foster greater public participation than ever before.”―Kym Rice, Assistant Director for Academic Affairs, Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, George Washington University“Inside the Lost Museum is a book worth wandering through, much like the capacious institutions whose histories and futures it contemplates…[A]thoughtful and feeling survey of changing practices of curation in American museums of all sorts.”―Christopher H. Heaney, Journal of Social History“Offers illuminating chapters on key curatorial questions about museum life…Lubar’s highly accessible book sits comfortably on museum-studies shelves alongside such works as Stephen Weil’s Making Museums Matter, Nina Simon’s The Participatory Museum, and Adrian George’s The Curator’s Handbook…It could be of practical interest to people who participate in any organization, large or small, devoted to preserving or displaying art or artifacts.”―Amy Henderson, Weekly Standard

This is the third book about museology that I've read lately (and reviewed here). The others are "Dry Storeroom #1" by Richard Fortey, about the Natural History Museum in London, and "Curators" by Lance Grande, about the Field Museum in Chicago. This book is about a museum that no longer exists--the Jenks Museum at Brown University, an idiosyncratic omnium-gatherum created as a personal project by zoologist John Whipple Potter Jenks. The museum scarcely outlasted its curator. Though little trace remains of it today, historian Steven Lubar (yes, of Brown) uses it as a jumping-off point for discussions of why museums exist, what they are good for and what they are good and not so good at doing, and how their missions have and have not changed since Jenks' time. He provides deep and insightful, and utterly candid, commentary on the surprisingly diverse views of these issues within the profession of museology. Unlike Fortey and Grande, he includes art, technology and archeology collections in his discussions. There is a lively discussion going on right now about whether museums have gone too far at adopting high-tech tools to engage young visitors; you will find an up-to-date review of the debate in these pages. It is a curious fact that a book about a museum that no longer exists actually has more to teach the lay reader than either of the two current books about major museums that are alive and well. But all three books have their charms; if you are interested in the why, how and wherefore of museums, by all means read all three. While I was reading this book, the business section of the New York Times published an article headlined "A collector's dream: creating your own museum as a legacy" (September 30, 2017). The kind of very personal vision that drove Jenks survives, and the museums that may eventuate will in good time face the same test as the Jenks museum: once the visionary who created them is gone, will anybody care? Will anybody come?

I bought this for my son in law for Xmas. He loved it!

Great book. Great transaction.

A highly thoughtful, comprehensive and approachable work, Lubar managed to take what could have been a dry topic, and with a deft touch brought both the process and practice of curation to life. In an engaging fashion, he manages to cover the entire museum landscape – art, science, and historical. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Inside the Lost Museum is an engaging read for museum lovers - revealing the cyclical nature of trends in curation and behind the scenes issues applicable to museums of all sizes.

The book is exactly what it claims to be - a brief recap of the significant periods, events, and people of US history. None of the sections tell you the whole story, but there are some decent references for further reading, and I found that browsing Wikipedia and a world map while reading helped me fill in some gaps. Some content gets repeated (especially in the timelines of wars, etc) and some sections are oddly short (for instance, the Tonkin Incident section doesn't actually describe what happened, although it was later discussed in a timeline), but those aren't major issues. I liked the references back and forth through history that show larger patterns, cycles, and causes, and I appreciate the sustained attention paid to systemic inequalities, especially for blacks and women, that have persisted through US history. This is my first Kindle book (I'm reading it on a mac) so maybe this is an issue of the medium, but I find the formatting pretty clunky, and the lack of photos, images, and maps is unfortunate.

Where else can you get an easy-to-read overview of 500 years of American history--from who really discovered America to how we elected our first black president--and have FUN reading it? I saw author Kenneth C. Davis interviewed on CNN and was mesmerized by what he had to say and how he said it. When they flashed his credentials on the screen as the author of this book, I bought it immediately. This isn't your high school or college history textbook. This one is so much fun you might even stay up past your bedtime reading it! Quite simply, read this book and you'll be quite literate when it comes to the big facts about our nation's past--whether you want to win at Trivial Pursuit, impress someone at a cocktail party or (most important) develop an understanding of why and how things happened THEN that deeply impact our NOW.

Love this book. I'm about halfway through it and I can tell you that it's highly readable, entertaining and captivating. While sharing what some would think are arcane facts about our history, author Kenneth C. Davis presents the human part of our history so we get a much clearer picture of how we've arrived at this point. (NOTE: We're not always heroes in this life--we're just humans doing the best we can do at the time. This is a marvelous book and I highly recommend it!

I love history, but I didn't feel like me were always told the truth. First off who was around to tell Washington chop down the tree, how did we know it was a cherry tree. I feel like history has been misleading all my life. This book is wonderful I wish I had this book in school discussion we would had. I you are on the fence about purchasing this book, please go on you will not be disappointed.

Item received on 2/25/17 by mail. a Very interesting book, who tells us more detailed pieces from the American history than you ought to learn, often with several boring facts on school.Kenneth C. Davis gives a very realistic picture of what was going good and wrong during the American history, and the influence in their concerned world.Again, the right literature that fills in the gaps of what we really didn't know.

If you're like me and don't remember much from American history classes in school, this book will help! I always hated history and didn't retain much of what I learned, so now that I'm trying to teach my kids I needed a refresher course. This book hits the highlights of history and does a great job of explaining everything. I feel like I've learned a lot.

Not a scholarly exposition of US history, but a fun way to get the essential facts. Great for youth and adults who are bored with the thought of learning history. If all US citizens knew history even at this level, our choice of public officials would be very different.

Obviously the title of the book is a misnomer. It is clear from the start that it is concerned only with American history. The goal of the author is to make history interesting so that people who have dosed off in history class can get interested again. In that regard, the book is successful. There is a strong narrative flow and a suspense that keeps you turning pages, despite the awkwardness of the question-answer format and the annoying repetitiveness. Pluses include the "voices", excerpts and quotes from historical figures and documents, as well as a long list of book recommendations for those wishing to delve further. The book suffers from major flaws, however: in many places, it is shallow as well as selective in its choice of topics. Much of the book boils down to a narration of "facts" without much analysis, the kind of information you could get reading headlines in news archives. While there is an argument for not making the book excessively long, much space is wasted by those "timelines" of every war and crisis that serve no purpose other than to bore the reader to death.Secondly, the selective choice of topics is most visibly felt in the area of foreign policy. Much of the outside world is disregarded until it makes itself felt (e.g., during a war). In this, the book is symptomatic of isolationist American culture as a whole, where people will look up a country only after we have troops there. That tendency to ignore the outside world is precisely why American foreign policy is in shambles. If a book that proclaims the wish to re-educate Americans about history is woefully inadequate when it comes to describing America's relation with the outside world, then there is no hope!As an example, I choose the Middle East. That region, of vital importance to the US, recipient of the bulk of US foreign aid, heavy trade and influence, and location of most of America's recent wars, is brought up in only a few places. A few pages are devoted to it in connection with the Arab Oil Embargo, without much explanation of the background - why the Arabs and Israel were fighting. There is no real discussion of the question of Palestine, the deep injustice most people in the Arab world feel about that issue, and the role of the US in creating and perpetuating that injustice. The US role in the failed Peace Process of the 1990s is completely absent. The book talks about the two Iraq wars, again without much background as to the whys. There is no mention of how, throughout the 1990s, Dick Cheney and others in the subsequent Bush administration were lobbying Clinton for an Iraq War. There is no mention of the Caspian Oil pipeline, again a desire since the 1990s and one of the major reasons for a war in Afghanistan. Finally, the book is more or less a "names and dates" book. Too many pages are devoted to descriptions of presidents and their campaigns, and too few devoted to describing how ordinary Americans lived. A much better read is Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States", but even that has gaping holes in foreign issues, especially when it relates to the Middle East.

"What is it about whales?" Leigh Chavez asks in "The Breath of Whales: The Science and Spirit of Pacific Ocean Giants," an account of her time as a naturalist, researcher and leader of whale watches. It's a question she does an excellent job of answering, even to readers who already love whales and grasp their magical appeal. In '98, the US Navy decided to test the impact of low frequency altitude sonar on whales near Maui, where the author happened to be stationed. Upon witnessing the bizarre and upsetting sight of several apparently orphaned calves, she notified the Navy but was stonewalled. Fearing that she would be dismissed as "unscientific," she kept quiet for several years before deciding to break her silence.Though this isn't a book where the central message is "such and such a traumatic event completely transformed my life perspective," the author does write movingly about a particular time in her life with this theme. In 2004, as the single mother of a young daughter, Chavez unexpectedly developed toxic shock from group B strep infection which made her recovery uncertain for a period of time. During her time recovering, her family and friends were careful to avoid telling her that a tanker had recently spilled oil into Puget Sound. Incidentally, this occurred on the three year anniversary of the discovery of an orphaned calf named Springer, whose plight drew much attention and prompted the forming of the Orphaned Orca Fund, which raised money and worked to transport the calf to where she was eventually accepted by a pod of whales, who had been orphans themselves. (Springer did, however, had to be weaned away from approaching boats and soliciting attention from their crews.)Chavez also describes such experiences as tracking data with other researchers for humpback whales in Hawaii, her quest to spot several species of beaked whales, and her volunteer position answering questions during the annual migration of gray whales off the Oregon coast. As she observed these creatures, she found much evidence that whales use problem solving skills and creativity in their daily lives such as when they prey on salmon hatcheries, as well as display altruistic behavior. Moreover they demonstrate the capacity to mourn, as the sight of a mother orca carrying her dead calf for several weeks in 2018 in the waters off British Columbia showed.Chavez writes with the same ability to evoke the whales' world as does naturalist Diane Ackerman (though with less flowery prose). She ends by describing advancements in how whales are viewed by the human race. More radically, as the author notes, in 2013, India banned captivity of whales after becoming the first nation to declare them "nonhuman persons," something I would have found unimaginable in the late eighties when I went on my first whale watch as a child. Included are photos (black and white in my Vine issued edition), identifying sketches, additional resources and a list of other works on whales.

I previously had read about Killer Whales, the ones in captivity. So when I saw this I thought, well now I can learn about whales in their true habitat. Leigh Calvez gives a documentary of her study of whales and of the things she learned about them, herself and our world.I enjoyed all of the stories and all of the facts about whales. One of the things that captured my interest was the description of how a mother whale cares for her child for a full year after birth. The gentleness of such a gigantic animal is truly amazing.I loved also learning how the whales are making a comeback in our seas. It is wonderful to find that they are growing in population numbers again. But it is intriguing that their areas of habitat are changing. Is this just a cycle that they go through or is it because of the encroachment of mankind?I hope you will learn as much as I did and find that you are inspired by these giants of the ocean.

I read this book cover-to-cover in one afternoon. It was informative without getting too technical, and heartwarming. It isn't really a biology book, or a "save the whales" manifesto, so if you're looking for that, keep browsing. This is a book about one woman's many encounters with whales in her work as a naturalist, teacher, and student of nature. Yes, you will get an understanding of some of the many dangers whales face in our crowded and noisy oceans, but she doesn't hammer on it. You get to make your own conclusions. It isn't political. The author shares her experiences aboard research vessels, working with students and teaching tourists about whales. You will feel the salt air, and best of all, you will get to know these wonderful, mysterious giants of the seas through the eyes of a person who has spent most of her adult life studying and learning and experiencing whales in the wild. It is a lovely read, great book club choice. Great for home-schooling.

Part science, some "save the whales" a little bit of a travelogue and a tint dash of personal reminisces. This is a wonderful book for those who love cetaceans- Dolphins, Whales, Porpoises.Leigh covers six species here, from the giant Blue to the tiny Spinner Dolphin.Full of wonderful sightings from her many trips as a scientist, naturalist and writer. Many "personal" notes about various marine mammals, like their rescue, etc.Very readable, fascinating. Illustrated with Photos and drawings.

I would highly recommend this book by Leigh Calvez as a good introduction to those who do not have much experience reading about whales and have often desired to learn more. Leigh Calvez does a great job of describing several different species of whale in a way that allows the book to be read at almost any chapter. I read the chapter about Orcas first, before heading back to the beginning of the book and it did not throw off the flow contained within the book. Unfortunately, with pollution and global warming on the rise in aquatic environments, there is a lot of sad and depressing information contained in this book as well which will hopefully spur us to taking more action where ever we can to reduce our footprint on this planet.

I found Leigh Calvez’s outlook and writing style to be very similar to that of Sy Montgomery. There is a mix of scientific observation and the author’s feelings about the animals she is observing and interacting with. Often, I prefer that, but there was a whiny tone to some of the writing that didn’t appeal to me. The Breath of a Whale is as much a memoir of Calvez’s time spent with and thinking about whales as it is about whales themselves. I do think that Calvez sometimes attributes her own outlook to that of the whales themselves. The book is a quick read. But that’s JustMe.

This is a great book, well researched and informative. Love the artsy/animal loving flavor.
