This is a remarkable, vivid. adventurous tale of exploration in the mountains of Eastern Peru. As an armchair explorer of the unknown regions of the world, this book enlightened me and fascinated me immensely. I have visited Brazil, including the Amazon, Argentina, including Patagonia, Ecuador and Chile as well as parts of Peru. I never had the health or stamina to do even a small part of what Savoy has done. Beyond that, he has written a page-turner of a documentary record of his archeological findings and personal experiences. I have read other similarly themed books which were dryer than a Peruvian mummy and frankly very boring. Not so with this presentation.! Get educated as well as entertained by reading this book. I was appreciative of the maps included; I only wish there had been more.
Extremely fascinating account of one man's lead in rediscovering lost cities of many different cultures in Peru. most of us know of the Incas, but few know of the many cultures in Peru that were conquered by the Incas or the Spaniards. This book gives an account of the journeys including the hiring of cub plans, porters, local guides and dealing with the local authorities. In addition to the many descriptions of the towns discovered 'this one surpasses Machu Picchu....' are stories of the animals, insects, local religious beliefs and snakes (the author was bitten by one and almost lost a leg). A good book. Not great. just good. I am glad I read this and grateful the writer conducted this series of explorations. time to go to Peru!
Inspired me to go to Peru's remote zone for 26 years, 3 months each year. We discovered mummies and now 22 sarcophagus that look like Easter Island statues except smaller and way up on a cliff.
Exploration of Inca roads is thrilling reading.

This has a lot of pictures so it is not very detailed about South American exploration. Nevertheless, it is very interesting and a good book for any backpackers in Peru to have. He gives a good feel for what an expedition is like and the preparatory drudgery that is involved. He covers no less than seven different expeditions. Some are covered in two sentences because he only discovered that nothing was in the explored area. But when he discovers the lost cities, you want to start exploring yourself and, because of the pictures, you feel that you are there. In general, the more you know about Peruvian exploration, the more interesting you will find this book. If you don't know anything about Peruvian archaeology and exploration, this is a good place to start.
I grew up dreaming of discovering lost cities. I was somewhat able to live out this dream by reading Antisuyo. It is a great account of the hardships and rewards that come as being an explorer and an adventurer. Antisuyo is hard to find, but if you can find it, buy it.
If you are interested in the Mayans and before, the migration, sailing and wars...this is an excellent account. I was surprised there was a "great wall of china" in Peru built by the early cultures. Easy read and enjoyable for the Mayanphite.
