This book was informative and easy to read. With elderly parents, the book provided useful information on dealing with this difficult time. But I also loved how the writer encouraged us to live our best life no matter our age. I recommend this as good reading for everyone that's interested in knowing how to do that!

Dr Holmes knows what he is talking about. He writes from personal experience, and his advice is always helpful. Buy it. You will be glad you did.

Rick was my personal physician, my husband's and his first wife's, my sister-friend. The books means a lot -had it signed by Rick and his editor, my favorite teacher ever!

This book should be a must read for everyone whether they are young or old. Many thought provoking stories and good material to start a discussion with loved ones.

really enjoyed reading this book

The author's personal living will is worth much more than the price of the book. It will work as the actual living will for most people. As you read and become comfortable with the author you probably will just change the names of people in the document. Personal experience proves his urging to use the living will as a communication tool adds more value than a custom document by a law firm. Rick Holm, author of "Life's Final Season", has not only presented strategy for dealing with the health system. He has laid himself bare. You will come to know this fine, generous and kind, man before finishing this contribution to the human condition. Before you finish reading you will know him well enough to realize comfort from his recommendations and logic. Full Disclosure: Rick and his family have been a great joy to me as lifelong friends. We grew up in the "Little Town on the Prairie" of the classic children's book series "Little House on the Prairie" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I was free to go along for the ride at pivotal times. I gained an understanding and an appreciation of his life's work. I think you will understand from reading. There is another added value; he is a teacher with a body of knowledge freely available as video archives on the internet. As "The Prairie Doc" on South Dakota Public Television he has presented health and illness information by interviewing expert guests, usually doctors, for many years. Also, youngsters may benefit reading this pleading to live all life to the fullest.

I bought this book first for my elderly mother. She read the book from cover to cover, reporting to me regularly on such things as what Dr. Holm thinks of Brussels sprouts, what Dr. Holm thinks of vitamins, and most importantly what Dr. Holm has to say about facing the dying process. She liked that he shared personal experiences, and she liked his straight-forward honesty. I had thought I would borrow her copy when she was finished, but I realized early on that she liked it as a reference book, so I would have to buy my own copy, which I did. I started reading it cover-to-cover also, but right now I’m focusing on Chapter 11 about facing the death of a loved one. The essay “Surviving after a parent dies; when all that unconditional love goes away” is especially meaningful because my mother passed away three weeks ago. Unafraid, she faced her death with dignity and grace. She made her own decisions about treatment options. She was a woman of strong faith, so I know that helped her at the end, but I am convinced, based on our conversations, that Dr. Holm’s book also played a part in helping her face her own dying process. I would like my father to read the book, but my sister took Mom’s copy, so I may have to buy a third copy for him!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dr. Rick Holms' book. He points out several weaknesses of our current health system in the U.S.--over prescription of unnecessary drugs being foremost in my opinion. Others: dietary supplements rather than dietary moderation and regular exercise. As one who grew up in his hometown, De Smet, SD, I also enjoyed his boyhood recollections. Finally, as a retired journalist, I found his book extremely readable. Folks of all ages should read it!
