(Just to be clear: You will pass the CLEP but NOT ace the CLEP using this book as your primary study material.)I passed the CLEP using just this book and prior knowledge(which admittedly was quite a lot on the subject, so my results may be skewed). It is very important however to know how to use the book properly.1. Start by reading through, cover to cover. Take note of the glossary in the back of the book, it is an extremely helpful summary/quick reference.2. Take the diagnostic test. Ignore the diagnostic subject by subject read out nonsense and instead review the test and read the explanations for every answer. This is VERY important. Even if you got a question right you not only need to make sure you understand WHY you got it right but also read the little blurbs about the other answers. This helps tremendously in building context. Spot read about individual topics in the book as needed, but honestly with a few exceptions from early on in the book(in other words, the stuff it had been longer since I had read) the test answer blurbs were far more helpful. They actually offer NEW information over what is in the book many times.3. Take Practice Test 1, do the same thing. Go over those answers!!!4. Retake the diagnostic, aiming for a much higher score. Save Practice Test 2 for now. Again, go over the answer blurbs to any question you don't have down.5. Repeat with Practice Test 1.6. Now it's time for Practice Test 2. It is important to save this one until after you redo the first two in order to get a clear idea of how you will handle all new questions at this point in your studying. Don't do great? Don't worry, just study the answer blurbs.7. Every day or so redo the tests, alternating between them as much as possible. You want to know the material by heart. Continue to look over the answer blurbs unless you are 100% sure of yourself about a particular question. This will continue to help develop context. (For example: If you know King Philips war was with Native Americans, you can guess it as the answer of "which war was not fought between the English and French?" even if you've forgotten what the other wars listed are.)8. After you are breaking 90%s on all three tests, go get the official CLEP Practice Test. Give that one a go. You will NOT do as well, but it will give you a better idea of the actual CLEP question style/syntax/etc. (REA is pretty close, but there are some important differences.)There are a few things I found to be on the actual CLEP that were missing in all study materials I saw, and that is a focus on early American art. While major authors are mentioned in passing in the REA book, I found myself completely unable to answer any questions involving poets and painters as that is not information in my wheelhouse to begin with. Regardless, these are only a small part of the test and you might not even receive questions about them on your version at all.
I literally just took the exam two hours ago. I scored a 62/80 using this book along with the online resources. Here are my thoughts, you will do fine on the exam if you know the information in this book AND all the info via the online practice exams and tests. Read through all them and know the core of the information.Things the book DID NOT cover that was very heavy on the exam:1.) Quotes/Phrases used from influential individuals. ie., Senators, Presidents, Activists. There were I recall more than 5-10 questions that used this type of questioning. THe book does a poor job covering this.2.) Antebellum topic: I didn't even recall one section of this being covered in the book.3.) Know the Authors and their respective books they wrote.Overall, if you're able to remember why, when, and the who's about each major section in this book you should do fine. I studied probably a total of 70-80 hours all together.
I used this and the clep official study guide. Didn't know anything about history before this, studied for a week and passed with a 67. It's super important to go through the terms in the back of the book and use the online tests as well. Religious sect questions are prevelant on the clep, had a few groups that weren't mentioned in this book at all. Indian chiefs who led battles are asked about. Seneca falls will be referenced for women's rights and influential women of the time will be mentioned. Hudson river group, important poets/authors, and antebellum period questions will most likely be asked about. Was prepared for this thanks to the other reviews and supplemented with online research of these specific topics. I also got questions on food produced by certain areas and common medical treatments, none of which are talked about in the book. For questions that I didn't know I guessed based on the time period in general. Good luck!
Just took the test today got a 61. As others say it doesn't have some stuff but its ok. I honestly used YouTube channel mr raymonds class for the break down of everything, then crash course as a review for the bigger picture. I also followed another reviewers suggestion and took the test that come with it (on the cd), went over all the questions right and wrong (even the right questions had breakdowns of why the answer was right) then took the test again another day. Any that i missed i read over. Also used premade quizlet flashcard i found on there. Ended up not really reading the book.
