We just discovered felting - it is fun. Wanted to get a book for design ideas and basic instructions, and after the 10th book with instructions on how to make bunnies, puppies and kittens I ran into this one! Not that there is anything wrong with bunnies, they are cute - but how many of them can you make before it gets boring? This book gives out-of-the box ideas. Not all the designs will be to everyone's liking (making a cigar out of felt is as appealing to me as a spoonfull of castor oil), but that could probably be said of any project book. On the other hand, some of the projects are really fun and creative (bracelets, monsters, yo-yos), and make you realize there is a world of possibilities out there. As other reviewers pointed out, most of the projects focus on 3d objects, but it gives the basics on how to felt flat objects too. There are not a lot of patterns to cut and follow exactly - but lots of whimsical ideas that you can modify, or elaborate on, and all the basic information you need to take off creating designs of your own.I would recommend this book to anyone looking for clear instructions, and out of the ordinary ideas.

I've been looking for a book to get me started on felting. The videos on youtube just weren't doing it for me. This book took me from, "whaaaaaaa?" to "ooooohhhhh, I get it now" in a matter of minutes. Since everyone learns differently, I suggest using the 'search this book' feature and see if Moxie gets through to you like she did for me. I don't know that I would do the projects in this book (although the voodoo doll earrings are pretty danged cool), but it was fun seeing what someone who thinks outside of the traditional has done with felt. Warning: This is a highly addictive craft! You've been warned ;)

Being a new felter, I bought this book on a whim. Aside from the wonderfully clear (yet not condescending) instructions, it would have been totally worth it just for the Voodoo doll earrings. I'm still laughing, so I can't start making them yet or I will end up poking myself.

I have to say, I love Moxie's sense of humor and her quirkiness. She says she's a self-taught needle felter and this has become a nice addition to my set of books. Her projects are fantastic and fit right in with my bizarre sense of humor. (Sheep of the Dead Finger Puppet!!) I've learned how to turn some of my felted "stuff" into jewelry and look for unique things to add to my felting. Thanks for writing such an entertaining book!

I just bought this book a couple of weeks ago. Of course, I'm not making the actual projects LOL but as a n00b to felting with her own ideas of what she wants to accomplish, this book has been extremely helpful and I'm made numerous things (beads, a bangle similar to the one in the book, working now on a diorama in a teacup!) that I could never have done until I got the book. Eventually, I will get around to making the projects because they look like fun.I also really enjoyed the author's silly humor - she made me laugh several times while I was reading it.

I saw an interview with the author and liked her so much I had to find her book. Sadly, it's a bit too quirky for me but I wish she was my neighbor!

I am the proud owner of over a dozen MadebyMoxie finger puppets and two way cool rings. When I heard a book was in the works, and soon to be released I was so excited! THIS BOOK ROCKS!!! It exceeded my expectations. This is a fun book! Here is what I liked ... Very, very informative as to the tools and instruction. (It is like Moxie is right there walking you through everything.) The tone is TOTAL humor! (You can tell this gal loves what she does.) The projects are varied enough that there is something for everyone. PLUS each project shows a different process and gives more tips. All of this is done with bold, colorful photos, and tons of energy. The title of the book really says it perfectly ... Tips and Tricks ... she has a ton of them. I also liked the resources listed at the end of the book. When you get YOUR copy make sure you don't miss the bottom of page 142. Thanks Moxie! I "felt" awesome reading your book! When is the next awesome book coming out! MORE PROJECTS!

This book is filled with fun, whimsical, weird, unique, and truly inpiring projects that don't just let you push the envelope, they let you blast right on through it! With great instructional information, and clear, enjoyable photographs all throughout, 'I FELT AWESOME' takes the relatively repetitive, humdrum world of needlefelting to a whole new level of art! If you think you're someone who "thinks outside the box", get ready to redefine THAT concept! WHAT box?!!

This is a coloring book filled with 31 interesting patterns with a mandalas type vibe. The artist involved with this book, John Wik, has done several other Creative Haven books on tesselations and other geometric shapes. While some of his previous books have been reprints, this one does not appear to be one. I don't own any of his other books, so this one is, at the very least, new to me. The shapes are very interesting and call for lots of colorThere are 31 designs in this coloring book which are printed on bright white perforated paper that is a fairly heavy stock. The designs are printed on one side of the page only. I usually like to remove my projects from the books to work on and I love that Creative Haven always makes it easy for me to do so.All of my gel pens and markers bleed through on Creative Haven books to varying degrees. I use chip board, cardstock, or freezer paper in between the sheets (if I am keeping it in the book) or under the page if I remove it from the book.

Oh I just love this book! My husband saw it and wanted this picture and that one and I ended up purchasing two so he could have his own! There are 31 mandala type pictures to color - these are best described (by me anyway lol) as a mandala that is mixed with geometric design. All of the pages have a centered mandala in the middle and as the mandala expands, the geometric aspect tends to get larger or more pronounced and I just love this - quite a nice and unique twist on traditional mandala books. The way the pages are designed, it is up to the user as to what medium to use and due to the type of design, you can easily use pencils and have the room to blend colors or just use pens and/or markers and color them withoug the need to blend colors. I have completed a few pages and on one I picked four primary colors and four secondary colors (all gel pens) and the end result was really fantastic. On another page, I used pencil only and as the mandala shape spread, I took my colors and blended them and got another awesome finished page. Of note, my husband colored a couple of the same pictures that I did using different medium and it was like looking at a different picture - so this is a book where your imagination can take you anywhere! I did not have any problems at all with the gel pen page I colored, none of them leaked through or caused any issue with the paper. I have used markers in this book and they do bleed through so if you do not remove pages from your book you will need to use some chip board or a couple of pages of copy paper to prevent damage to the following page. All designs are printed in high quality resolution and on one side of the page only. All pages are perforated for easy removal. The paper is a decent quality white and as stated, no problems with pencils, gel pens or markers. This is a great book and I just love the designs that John Wik put in this book - looking forward to perhaps a second book like this!

I have gotten quite a few of the Creative Haven coloring books... they are great... The pages are perforated, one-sided, and fairly thick. Also every picture has a border so you don't have to color off the edge of the page. The lines in this book are smooth and the detail is perfect for gel pens or fairly narrow tipped markers. Pencils would work easily, too. While I prefer some of the animal or picture type designs, these "Dimensions" designs are very easy to get intrigued in and can be colored to look 3-D (even sometimes by accident).

This is the fourth coloring book I have purchase from the Creative Haven line. I have been very pleased with each and every one of them. The thing I like best is that the pages are perforated. This makes them easier to color because you don't have to try to color in the curve of the book. It also makes it easy for two people to color pages from the same book (my grandson loves to color with me). This book is especially intriguing as the images really do appear to be 3 dimensional.

Bought three coloring books for the staff I work with at the hospital for Christmas. We work in a high stress area but during the down time we often have little to do. All RN's, we have many hobbies we would LIKE to do...knitting, sewing, the like but for whatever reason they are frowned upon. SO, I took a chance and bought these for STRESS RELIEF. I was a bit nervous wondering the reception but WOW was I surprised!Even the Doctors waited their turn, now no one minds being on call for the chance to "color" in peace. We have plans to hang our ART in the room as if we are preschoolers as we finish the pictures. Everyone loved the idea, SOME of the nurses had t be spoken to about hoarding the pencils.....

Originally was going to send this back for an exchange, because this book was not properly packaged, and the cover was slightly damaged, and torn. I never got around to it, almost a year it sat still in the damaged package. Now decided to color in it, as to not waste it, and I'm really loving it!! It's not easy for me to complete coloring book pictures, but this book really draws you in to your design, and also insight into my life! (For me anyway)--I would get this book again, but hopefully not damaged!

I love coloring the designs in this book they are right on and relaxing to color. The perforated pages are easy to tear out and the thickness of the pages makes them perfect for an array of different kinds of coloring materials. I am going to buy more of these Creative Havens books and recommend them for your coloring enjoyment.

As usual Creative Haven does not disappoint me! This book is a lot of fun as anything can be accomplished color wise with these drawings! Having lots of fun deciding what approach to take with each new page. Heavy nice paper, perforated pages with drawings one sided, all sorts of unique designs to color as your heart wishes.

A totally sweet ride through the 1970s on every type of board . . . from flat, smooth decks and open-bearing clay wheels to curved, gripped decks with insane urethane (and other) wheels and sealed bearings! Very comprehensive . . . and as a skater from CA, I enjoyed learning so much about the other developments - especially the Ollie coming from FLA! But workout before lifting this beautiful beast . . . it is a tank. If you want to know more yourself . . . or know a skater (or would be skater historian) . . . give this a look! Highly recommended, but recognize that I am indeed a biased skater - who still longboards for transport!

If you are a skater on the East Coast this is a must. If you have ever had any interest or appreciation for skateboarding this book is a must. 10 stars. This book was a real labor of love, Thank you for creating it.

Man, this is just great......!This is THE Book about 70's skateboarding history, no matter what.I've been skating since 1975 and this book is just amazing about Skateboarding's History. So far I have 'only' read half way though and it's NOT boring at all.Through the decades I have met lots of the Pros featured in the book in person and also ridden for some of the companies featured in the book.....it's just a blast to read, even as a non-native speaker based in Germany.Hats off to Craig & crew for publishing this Skateboard Bible! It was shipped to Germany in 10 days from the US btw.

Wow, what a book!

I'm an old school skater.

Craig Snyder's detail and focus on events, however seemingly trivial, bring the story of Skateboarding ( especially Florida) to life. Rich with personal and candid photos the reader gains a great appreciation that this is a work of both love of the sport and studied cultural history.

this book is way better than I expected it to be...simply rad..

Amazing book! East Coast skaters of a certain vintage MUST read

(Just to be clear: You will pass the CLEP but NOT ace the CLEP using this book as your primary study material.)I passed the CLEP using just this book and prior knowledge(which admittedly was quite a lot on the subject, so my results may be skewed). It is very important however to know how to use the book properly.1. Start by reading through, cover to cover. Take note of the glossary in the back of the book, it is an extremely helpful summary/quick reference.2. Take the diagnostic test. Ignore the diagnostic subject by subject read out nonsense and instead review the test and read the explanations for every answer. This is VERY important. Even if you got a question right you not only need to make sure you understand WHY you got it right but also read the little blurbs about the other answers. This helps tremendously in building context. Spot read about individual topics in the book as needed, but honestly with a few exceptions from early on in the book(in other words, the stuff it had been longer since I had read) the test answer blurbs were far more helpful. They actually offer NEW information over what is in the book many times.3. Take Practice Test 1, do the same thing. Go over those answers!!!4. Retake the diagnostic, aiming for a much higher score. Save Practice Test 2 for now. Again, go over the answer blurbs to any question you don't have down.5. Repeat with Practice Test 1.6. Now it's time for Practice Test 2. It is important to save this one until after you redo the first two in order to get a clear idea of how you will handle all new questions at this point in your studying. Don't do great? Don't worry, just study the answer blurbs.7. Every day or so redo the tests, alternating between them as much as possible. You want to know the material by heart. Continue to look over the answer blurbs unless you are 100% sure of yourself about a particular question. This will continue to help develop context. (For example: If you know King Philips war was with Native Americans, you can guess it as the answer of "which war was not fought between the English and French?" even if you've forgotten what the other wars listed are.)8. After you are breaking 90%s on all three tests, go get the official CLEP Practice Test. Give that one a go. You will NOT do as well, but it will give you a better idea of the actual CLEP question style/syntax/etc. (REA is pretty close, but there are some important differences.)There are a few things I found to be on the actual CLEP that were missing in all study materials I saw, and that is a focus on early American art. While major authors are mentioned in passing in the REA book, I found myself completely unable to answer any questions involving poets and painters as that is not information in my wheelhouse to begin with. Regardless, these are only a small part of the test and you might not even receive questions about them on your version at all.

I literally just took the exam two hours ago. I scored a 62/80 using this book along with the online resources. Here are my thoughts, you will do fine on the exam if you know the information in this book AND all the info via the online practice exams and tests. Read through all them and know the core of the information.Things the book DID NOT cover that was very heavy on the exam:1.) Quotes/Phrases used from influential individuals. ie., Senators, Presidents, Activists. There were I recall more than 5-10 questions that used this type of questioning. THe book does a poor job covering this.2.) Antebellum topic: I didn't even recall one section of this being covered in the book.3.) Know the Authors and their respective books they wrote.Overall, if you're able to remember why, when, and the who's about each major section in this book you should do fine. I studied probably a total of 70-80 hours all together.

I used this and the clep official study guide. Didn't know anything about history before this, studied for a week and passed with a 67. It's super important to go through the terms in the back of the book and use the online tests as well. Religious sect questions are prevelant on the clep, had a few groups that weren't mentioned in this book at all. Indian chiefs who led battles are asked about. Seneca falls will be referenced for women's rights and influential women of the time will be mentioned. Hudson river group, important poets/authors, and antebellum period questions will most likely be asked about. Was prepared for this thanks to the other reviews and supplemented with online research of these specific topics. I also got questions on food produced by certain areas and common medical treatments, none of which are talked about in the book. For questions that I didn't know I guessed based on the time period in general. Good luck!

Just took the test today got a 61. As others say it doesn't have some stuff but its ok. I honestly used YouTube channel mr raymonds class for the break down of everything, then crash course as a review for the bigger picture. I also followed another reviewers suggestion and took the test that come with it (on the cd), went over all the questions right and wrong (even the right questions had breakdowns of why the answer was right) then took the test again another day. Any that i missed i read over. Also used premade quizlet flashcard i found on there. Ended up not really reading the book.

Be prepared to be hooked from the very beginning. Christine Nolfi has a delightful and unique style of writing that teases your emotions, tickles your mind, and tugs at your heart. She is a word artist and the way she paints a story, the detail of not only the characters but the rich landscape she creates pulls the reader in immediately and holds them there. The complexity of each character, of each circumstance is powerful. In this story, Sweet Lake, I immediately related to the background story of Linnie, the protagonist. It was easy to have an emotional bond with this character, her thoughts, her struggles in life, and her fears. Freddie, the antagonist, was a true work of art. I will admit I wanted to reach out and slap him on numerous occasions. I will not say more than that, you will have to read the book to find out why. Then there are the Sweet Lake Sirens, love those Sirens. This novel has twists and turns that kept me reading almost non-stop, but I would expect no less from such a gifted writer. This novel has heart and I feel confident to say it will touch yours.

An AWESOME Read & for me a New Favorite Author!! What a Find!!! : ) This story drew me in Right Away & Never let me go!! I feel as though I am a part of this group of characters & small town! I have Laughed, Hooted & Pulled for them Every step of the way!! I am sad these folks aren't really real, as I Want Very Much to Join Right In!!! The story IS Uplifting & has been Such a Joy to read!! I Am Beyond Thrilled that there Is Another book after this one!! (I am talking Snoopy Happy Dance!!) Special Thanks to the author for an Incredible story that I could Not put down!! I lost All track of time & place while visiting this town and Pulling for Linnie, Daniel & even Freddie toward the end - All the while Applauding the "Sirens" with their Special, Well Intended, Quirky Ways!!! Please Say You WILL Buy this Book!! It IS simply Delightful!!! ; )

Linnie Wayfair has her hands full with the family business, her non-existent love life, and the town eccentrics - the Sweet Lake Sirens. Linnie manages the Wayfair Inn, and with the help of her best friends, Cat and Jada, has managed to finally get it running in the black after her older brother, Freddie, took off with most of the working capital seven years ago. The family dynamics are interesting due to the elder Wayfairs' reluctance to see Linnie as the capable daughter she is. They're holding out for the possibility that their wayward son will return to fill the spot traditionally held by Wayfair men at the helm of the family business, but egocentric Freddie is only interested in his movie production company. When Freddie returns to Sweet Lake, everyone is sure it can only be to cause trouble. This idea is reinforced when he hires Daniel, the small town's only lawyer, to help him with a personal issue. Problem is, Daniel has been in love with Linnie since high school (and she with him, though she won't admit it) and he has to keep Freddie's secret.True to her typical style, Christine Nolfi has come up with another great story, full of fun and quirky characters, plot twists, a delightful setting, and an entertaining story line. You'll struggle with Linnie as she decides how best to step into the legacy of managing the family business, her choices guided by her feelings for Daniel, her brother, and her parents. You'll laugh at the antics the Sirens, the self proclaimed protectors of Sweet Lake and all its residents, as they attempt to direct the outcome of Linnie's struggles. You'll love to hate Freddie as his intentions for the future of the Inn unfold. And you'll hope for the best as Linnie discovers her real feelings for Daniel. Ms. Nolfi has once again provided us with a beautiful story that will leave you anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. This book does not disappoint.

This book is beautifully written in typical Nolfi fashion. A great story, quirky characters and tons of suspense take you to the end and leave you wanting more. Linnie loves her Inn and the beautiful town of Sweet Lake. For years she has done everything in her power to bring the huge mansion inn back from the brink of disrepair. Battling her parents and long lost brother for control of her beloved inn isn't as easy as she hoped. But, with a legacy of only men running the inn, she has her work cut out for her. With two great friends and a group of quirky old ladies she is forced to take charge and find a solution that everyone will agree on. Finding and letting herself be loved is a bonus. This book is wonderfully written. I loved the Sirens. They added humor and wisdom to the story. Christine has a way of bringing her characters to life. Whether it be the colorful Sirens or the loyal Daniel, her characters have a way of keeping you interested from the first page to the last. Twists and turns keep the story flowing until you can't put the book down and end up finishing it in one read. I loved this book and can't wait for the next installment.

Welcome to Sweet Lake. A little Ohio town trying to make a comeback after hitting the economic skids. Linnie Wayfair, is trying to steer her family's inn back into the black after it was decimated by her errant brother when he stole family funds and took off for California.Along with her close friends, employees and a circle of women called the Sweet Lake Sirens, she is making progress, moving closer to her goal. A monkey wrench is thrown in when her brother reappears with a ridiculous entourage, angering everyone.I enjoyed this first installment of Christine Nolfi's new series. Her previous series set in Liberty Ohio stole my heart and I look for this one to do the same. A mix of decent small town people liberally peppered with eccentrics along with a villain or two makes for a light engaging read. Would love too see Sweet Lake and Liberty cross over in one of her books!

Another delightful book. But watch out for the Sirens.Definitely a must read. A sweet love story. Or is itChristine Nolfi grabs your attention and finally lets go at the end

The No Sweat Exercise Plan (A Harvard Medical School Book)

Review

Simon Says: Move Your Legs. And Arms. Tuesday, January 24, 2006; HE03 We have long advocated incorporating activity -- any activity -- into your daily routine to help combat the nasty consequences of sedentary modern living. Now a doctor is taking that line a step further: In his new book, "The No-Sweat Exercise Plan" (McGraw-Hill, 2006), Harvey B. Simon argues that you can get enough exercise to stay healthy without ever breaking a sweat. Simon, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, cites numerous studies showing the surprising benefits of small chunks of moderate activity, and challenges readers to embrace a variety of opportunities to use calories (like taking the stairs instead of the elevator). What makes this different from other exercise books advocating an easy approach is Simon's Harvard pedigree and serious research chops. Also, he has spent much of his career dismissing moderate activity as "too easy to be beneficial": In a 1987 book, he urged readers to adopt an intense aerobic exercise habit, including marathon running. He goaded walkers to run, and ridiculed golfers. But having surveyed recent literature, he says, he is a changed man, one who sings the praises of moderation. "For years data have been coming in that moderate exercise is good for cardiac health, obesity, diabetes and a host of other illnesses," Simon says. "Moderate exercise is not a distant second, in terms of health benefit," to more intense workouts. Being something of an exercise physiology nerd, he coins a term -- cardiometabolic exercise, or CME -- to distinguish various health-creating activities from standard definitions of aerobic exercise. Just about anything that burns calories counts, he says. He assigns a point value to each activity and encourages readers to accumulate at least 150 CME "points" a day, through such simple tasks as walking, raking leaves, cooking, watering plants, even (yes) bowling. You needn't track your points meticulously, as long as you get the activity. Simon makes an important distinction between "exercise for health" (what he is pushing) and "exercise for fitness" -- the higher-intensity cardio and strength training that recreational and serious athletes need. The book includes health and fitness assessments, including a simple calculation for learning your heart attack risk. "People hear the surgeon general talk about walking and then they see someone running by with a heart rate monitor on and they say, 'That guy's getting benefit that I will never be able to get.' And they go back to watching TV. I am not against intense exercise, but it's more than you need for [good] health." The book condenses info on exercise physiology -- how oxygen gets around your body, why bones degenerate, how hard your heart works -- and is straightforward and readable, though at times redundant. The no-sweat program has its own pyramid, founded on nutrition, followed by CME activities and topped with strength, flexibility and balance training. The exercises provided are simple and accessible. The book includes sections for those with illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, and for people who want to go beyond exercising for basic health. Simon notes that Americans spend an average of 170 minutes per day watching television (yikes!). "I put that in there for people who think they lack the time to exercise. People should build physical activity into the fabric of daily life so they don't have to set aside time" to work out, he says. -- John Briley © 2006 The Washington Post Company (The Washington Post 2006-01-24)Why Your New Year's Resolution to Get Healthier May Be Pretty Easy to Keep by Tara Parker-Pope January 3, 2006; Page D1 Promising to exercise for better health is usually the hardest New Year's resolution to keep. But a growing body of research shows that it should be one of the easiest. Numerous studies now show that you don't always have to break a sweat to reap the most significant health benefits of exercise. While national health guidelines often suggest 30 to 60 minutes a day of exercise, it appears to take far less effort than that to make a dramatic improvement in your health. The biggest health benefits come from just a small increase in activity: Five hours of housework a week, a nine-minute walk a day, or four hours of weekend golf all translate into dramatic reductions in risk for heart attacks and other health problems. Most people think they need to take a daily jog or hit the gym several times a week to boost health. That's because for years the medical community has preached the need for vigorous aerobic activity and athletic fitness. Those are laudable goals with clear benefits, including improved muscle tone, energy levels and psychological well-being. But they are also tough goals, so people often fail and end up doing nothing. Now many doctors are trying to undo the wrong impression caused by the aerobics movement. They are trying to redefine how much exercise is really enough, and encourage patients to think about achieving "health fitness" rather than athletic fitness. "I regret preaching the doctrine of aerobics as I did for so many years," says Harvey B. Simon, the Harvard Medical School professor whose 1987 book "The Athlete Within" urged readers to expend at least 2,000 calories a week exercising -- that's about three to six hours a week of aerobic effort, depending on the activity. He now believes it takes only about half that amount to improve health. "We need a new way to think about exercise," he says. This doesn't mean people who like to exercise several hours a week shouldn't continue. And people in high-risk categories, such as those with a strong family history of heart disease, might be advised to adopt a more vigorous exercise program. But a closer look at the data from various exercise studies shows that for most of us, the biggest gains in health come with far less effort. So what's the magic number? In June 2001, researchers reviewed 44 exercise studies and found that most of the benefits of exercise kick in with the first 1,000 calories of increased activity each week, which reduced the risk of dying during the various study periods by 20% to 30%, according to the Journal of Medical Science and Exercise. To burn 1,000 calories a week or about 145 calories a day, most people need to increase their daily activity only slightly. A 180-pound person could burn off about 100 calories during 20 minutes of housework. Add in a 10-minute walk (50 calories) or taking the stairs four times a day (100 calories) and you've exceeded your daily goal. Search the Web for an exercise calculator like the one found at www.caloriecontrol.org/exercalc.html2. Other studies have supported the notion that a little activity goes a long way. This month, the medical journal Diabetes Care showed that moderate exercise added nearly 2½ years to life expectancy for patients, compared with those who were sedentary. A 2004 report by Swedish researchers showed that older adults who exercised only once a week were 40% less likely to die during the 12-year study period than those who did nothing. A 1999 study of more than 800 residents of Kings County, Wash., showed dramatic health benefits among those who gardened or walked for just an hour a week. Although that adds up to only about 400 to 500 calories, the increased activity translated into about a 70% lower risk of dying from sudden cardiac arrest. Much of what we know about moderate exercise and health comes from observational studies following groups of people for long periods of time. But the Cooper Institute -- whose founder Kenneth Cooper coined the term "aerobics" -- has just finished a five-year study of 460 postmenopausal women who were assigned to 225, 150 or just 75 minutes of exercise a week -- that's as little as 15 minutes five times a week. The results of the trial aren't yet available, but the study is part of a new push by scientists to determine what "dose" of exercise offers the biggest gains in health. And there's a growing belief that it's less than the standard 30-minutes-a-day recommendation. "All the evidence shows it doesn't take that much," says Tim Church, medical director for the Cooper Institute in Dallas. The problem is convincing patients that a little extra effort really does go a long way. Doctors say most people have gotten the message that it's better to take the stairs or park farther away as a way to boost activity during the day. But most patients don't really believe it works. "The average person still thinks you have to train for a marathon," Dr. Church says. One concern is that there isn't a scientific vocabulary to describe this "other" type of exercise. Aerobic exercise involves pushing your heart rate to 70% to 85% of its maximum, and keeping it there for 20 to 60 minutes at a time. That sounds far more impressive than a daily exercise plan that consists of a morning stretch, taking the stairs at work, cleaning the house and walking the dog at the end of the day. In his latest book, "The No Sweat Exercise Plan," Dr. Simon has dubbed these lower-intensity activities as "cardiometabolic" exercise. He hopes the more scientific-sounding name will add credibility to the notion that moderate physical activity really does improve your health. "Somebody can get the health benefits of exercise without ever buying a pair of sneakers," Dr. Simon says. (The Wall Street Journal 2006-01-03)"Insufficient exercise plays an important role in four of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S., including heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. And it may also contribute to the eighth leading killer, Alzheimer's disease." This is according to Simon (medicine, Harvard Medical Sch.; The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health ), whose compelling wellness book teaches those ready to start an exercise and diet program how to do it and how to measure their progress. He offers in-depth explanations of why one should exercise, which exercises develop the cardiovascular system, why one should include weightlifting in a weekly routine, and why exercise becomes essential as one grows older. A chapter titled "Exercise Therapy: Good for What Ails You" explains why exercise leads to better outcomes for several conditions, among them stress, hypertension, diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and chronic fatigue. A discussion of nutrition and preventive medical care emphasizes what you should eat - not what you shouldn't . Excellent graphics are provided throughout, particularly in "20 Guidelines for Healthful and Enjoyable Eating" and "Preventive Medical Services for Healthy Adults." Highly recommended for undergraduate, public health, public, and consumer health libraries. - Howard Fuller, Stanford Health Lib., Palo Alto, CA (Library Journal 2005-09-15)

These things are only as good as your willingness to stay with the program. I don't have that much will power, but it is good information to have and use.

you like t workout this is th book for you

Despite the 230+ page format, author and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Harvey B. Simon's premise in "The No Sweat Exercise Plan: Lose Weight, Get Healthy and Live Longer" takes a page out of lifetime exercise guru Jack LaLanne's recipe for a healthy and long life. The idea, so simple that it really isn't necessary to spend $21.95 on the book, can be summed up albeit it gratuitously with the catch phrase, "Keep on Truckin'" So sorry, Harvey.Okay. Now you might have the inclination to want to `read all about it' and Dr. Simon does provide a semi-interesting format immersed in enough medical no-how to satisfy all those out there who have a need for those special credentials that validate information as `expert testimony.' Keep in mind that Simon as a medical doctor demands the requisite tests that the medical community deems `preventative medicine' and he elaborately explains the dangers of certain body signals like BMI, hypertension, high cholesterol, HDL levels etc. to help the reader to understand just how exercise as a panacean solution in general helps to slow the aging process. Mainly, Simon debunks the need for heavy-duty sweat-inducing aerobics and prescribes a European lifestyle without the saturated high fat cheeses, (although he uses strictly American examples) of moving about rather than relying on the couch potato contrivances and conveniences of modern life.Simply said, Simon advocates four types of exercise where what he calls CME---cardo-metabolic exercise---wins as hands down most important. Using an elaborate point system he rates any exercise that elevates your heart rate and stokes up your metabolism, suggesting that around 1000 points a week should maintain good health for those without special needs. He sites 2000 points a week for those who may seriously want to lose weight. Typically, one would receive 200 points for jogging at the rate of 12 minutes per mile for 30 minutes as opposed to 165 points for 30 minutes of golfing while carrying your own clubs. Whether or not you sweat or not, Simon says is not the issue. Moving around (walking) for sustained periods of time on a daily basis remains paramount to insure good health. In his No Sweat Basic Pyramid, Dr, S suggests that good eating with an eye on nutrition provides the fuel the body needs to sustain itself---here the standard approach of watching calories in a 15% protein - 25% to 35% fat - 50% to 60% carbohydrate breakdown, avoiding sugars, trans-fats and processed foods maintains optimal vitamin and mineral intake. Following a substantial CME block on the pyramid, the three other types of exercise gain the spotlight, beginning with strength training as a separate component then a shared block of flexibility and balance training. Simon details all four types of exercise with actual diagrammed routines, establishing what he preaches as an undeniable "no brainer." Anyone who has been keeping active for years already knows what it takes the bulk of the book to say. I repeat, `just keep moving----use weight bearing exercise to keep up your muscle mass, stretching to keep your body limber and balance to prevent falling. At the pinnacle of the No Sweat pyramid, Simon places preventative medicine and hoists a flag atop to alert one to the perils of too much stress in modern life. No real new news here, however Simon does take out the time to help you construct a `my-pyramid' of your own to help you realize your personal health goal and spends a few extra chapters explaining some of the common complaints people may initially have about adding a daily exercise regime to their life. For those who have perspired routinely in gyms and in the outdoors for over the last 25 years, he lists the types of sweaty exercise machines one can utilize to maximize the burn.Bottom line: if your thing is to read about what you already know and have heard about for years, check this tome out of the library and get down and dirty with expert medical information about the whys and wherewithal-s pertaining to what you are already doing to maintain your health. If you haven't started yet - shame on you---this book can provide some grist for your exercise mill and set you on the right path for the future. With that in mind, I can only recommend this book to those who have been living under a rock for the last 30+ years----everyone else need not spend the going rate to vindicate their own common sense.

Need to do more. No one needs more words to read that don't say anything new. No one needs more words to read that don't say anything new.

I read about half of this book and there is nothing new in it. It is very outdated and mainly states that any exercise is good.

I bought this book on a whim after hearing about it on the radio or someplace. I'm not even sure.

Why do I consider this work to contain the best exercise- advice at all? The answer is because the advice it gives does not require 'exercising' as a special block of time taken in a gym, or with some special instrument. It thinks of exercise as a possible extension of everyday life- activity. We can do much exercise simply by increasing the pace at which we walk, or by lifting a few cans in the proper way each day for a few minutes. Whether we are gardening, housecleaning, shopping, mowing the lawn, climbing stairs, washing the car, playing with children , we can benefit physically by increasing the level of our activity. We can no matter, it seems , where we are, and almost in whatever we are doing, find a way to excercise a bit more, to get ourselves moving physically in a better way. And these little bits of motion are not insignificant but can add up to better health. As Judy Siegel writes in the 'Jerusalem Post' "The latest scientific studies shows conclusively that people can get the full health benefits of exercise with only slight modifications to their daily routines."Simon also in this work provides a more thorough analysis of different kinds of exercise, and specific steps for improving functioning of different areas of the body. This work would seem to have something for everyone who cares about improving their health. Most highly recommended.

Why am I writing this review? Because I felt it would be a disservice to anyone out there who was looking for a great exercise plan if I didn't rave out Dr. Simon's book. I felt compelled to let everyone know about this wonderful book that has changed my life. I was ecstatic when a close friend told me about Dr. Simon's book. I had no idea that such a book existed and I was anxious to get my hands on it. Somehow, with two children, I found the time to read the book. With two very young children, I had absolutely no time to go to the gym. I was feeling sluggish and even guilty for not exercising. After reading his book, I realized there were so many other options I was not aware of. Dr. Simon's book opened my eyes to a whole world of fitness programs that would be most beneficial to my health and well being. I learned about MY body and MY personal health needs and was able to create an exercise plan that fit into my schedule. I have even involved my four year old in some of my activities. I want to suggest to everyone to check out the section on stretching. I can't go a day without doing each and every one one of Dr. Simon's ten basic stretching exercises. They leave me feeling rejuvenated and flexible! They are simple and quick, yet highly effective.I also have a better understanding of proper nutrition and what diet works best for me. I have made some serious changes to my eating habits, thanks to Dr. Simon. I follow the TLC diet and can say that it has made a huge difference in how I feel. I am a healthier person now and will continue to be for years and years. My life has taken a turn for the better since reading this book!!
