Bought this for my nine-year-old son. We moved to a rural and overtly religious area and he was finding himself in countless arguments with classmates and bus mates regarding his lack of belief. My husband and I offered him a ton of information on responding to these poor indoctrinated children, but we were often a little over his head. This book offered him a good, easy, simple summary of religion and the belief in god(s) that he could use when arguing his point. Of course, he shouldn't have to argue at all as the burden of proof is on them, however, the world doesn't work that way and he is way outnumbered.I don't think this book is great for those who don't want to dive into more specifics on origins of religion for their kids, but it is a great backup, I'd say an essential backup to parents that might have a hard time dumbing down a lot of the problems with religion. As far as bias as another reviewer claimed, I don't think this book is biased, it's respectful, but doesn't shy away from the absurdity of religion(s).

A very gentle introduction to Atheism for kids. In these times, this is a great book for kids to read and orient themselves in the universe. A must for all parents who don't want their kids growing up believing in magic and being afraid of the dark.

Not enough books like this out there. My four year old says it's a little boring, so probably better for a six or 8 year old but great book!

Great book to help with discussing this topic with kids

Great book for atheist families

I requested and received a copy of this book for an early review. I specifically requested this book because as an adult atheist and a librarian, I am concerned both about the portrayal of atheism in the media and the quality of children's literature that I might be inclined to include in the library because I seek to provide a diverse collection of kid's books.I really liked this. It's a short book, which is to be expected of the reading level, but it also includes a good vocabulary for early readers and those who are looking to move up. Having dealt with parents, I know many of them like to have a selection of words they can explain to kids, etc.,or look up together for learning purposes, and this book does have them. As a kid's book, it's also factual. Whether or not you agree with atheism, the book speaks from a factual standpoint, and it's not condemning of any religion. Indeed, I would recommend this book to parents who are trying to raise tolerant religious children as well, because it provides an unbiased look at their atheist classmates. With atheism rapidly growing in the world, this is a good book for those who would want to explain it as much as they would want to explain Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, or Christianity to a child who was not part of those groups. The one void that this book fills - from what I've seen of all available on this topic - is that it uses the word atheism. Atheism is not a shameful or bad word, but many children's books tend to use a host of words that all essentially mean atheism, but are designed more to endear their books to those who would be openly hostile to the term atheism. I, however, prefer this term, and I really appreciate that this book gives children the general term and teaches them that it's not bad. Personally, I think that when we use the general terms like "Freethinker" or "Humanist" or "Rationalist," (which are all good, but vague, terms) we sort of inherently teach kids that they want to avoid the moniker of atheist - which, this book explains, simply means that they don't believe in a god. This book's message of "don't be ashamed" is good in that it is not ashamed of the label of atheist because it is not shameful.I do not have children, but if I did, this would be a book I would purchase to read them, and I would gladly, in my capacity as an atheist adult and a librarian, recommend this to parents and children on the topic. I will be recommending this to my library for acquisition in keeping a diverse selection for children in regards to religion and lack of religion.

Easy to understand book about why people choose religion or atheism to help parents when kids ask questions about belief.

This provides a really broad overview of atheism, but is not in depth enough. I literally could have gotten all of this info on the web with two minutes worth of searching.
