Well written, rigorous enough yet quite practical. Complete with worked-out examples. Covers a breadth of topics, including bond math, annuities and survival modeling. Recommended.

Perfect for me a wanna-be actuary puzzled by people throwing out 4% withdrawal rules and 20% savings rates and wondering where in the hell those numbers came from. This book explains the formulas used to derive them and enables you to apply your own assumptions and get your own numbers. Full explanation of why he prefers a probability distribution for expected returns rather than montecarlo simulations using historical returns. Formulas given give you confidence that your monte carlo model is giving you reasonable results.Not all formulas derived from scratch, but proof available on the web.Essential if you want to "do the math" or make reasonableness checks on monte carlo model outputs.

I read the book from front to cover. It's combination of actuarial principles and the application to highly relevant retirement issues is unique. Most of the actuarial books are impossible to read even for well trained economists. A way to keep consulting income for actuaries? There is a huge gap between finance people and insurance guys. Milevskys book is a long needed and important step to bring those two branches closer together - to start solving real problems in real life. A must have on the desk of financial planners, retirement economists and bankers looking for problems which are difficult but relevant in application.

This earlier book is a very detailed discussion of the computations that go into the question of retirement income. For those who are math oriented, this is a good book to begin to get insight into solving the retirement income question. However, the time period continually decreases since longevity is continually shortening as a person ages. Therefore, the time should be evaluated as delta t or changing time. In practice, I see this difference between ages emerge as I evaluate different situations. Readjusting the formula for each age, as one ages, does not work since in practice this results in taking more out early and having to retrench later.However, getting deeper insight into the mathematical approach is extremely enlightening and useful to those who are so oriented.Wealth Odyssey: The Essential Road Map For Your Financial Journey Where Is It You Are Really Trying To Go With Money?

In Lana and Lilly Wachowski, Cael Keegan reassesses the complete film oeuvre in light of their coming out as trans. Like any view through a very specific lens there are a couple of weak connections but overall the arguments Keegan puts forth are very compelling.The films are approached chronologically, though connections are made forward and back, and this works very well. If you're familiar with the many academic interpretations of the films, particularly from Bound through the Matrix trilogy to V for Vendetta, you will be very pleased with the added levels Keegan adds. There is no attempt to make previous theoretical understandings less valid but rather to demonstrate the Wachowskis' overall work can be better understood through a trans* aesthetic.Reading this reminded me of the new book Foucault at the Movies and the discussion there about the difference between finding where philosophical thought is illustrated in a film and in the possibility of film to be the message itself. Keegan makes a strong case that the Wachowskis aren't so much using philosophical thought and ideas in their films (though they certainly are) but rather creating philosophical texts in and of themselves. It isn't hard to see certain thinkers in the films, much like you can see Foucault in Judith Butler's work, but the films make their own fully contained arguments much as Butler's books make their own arguments. My use had always been to read into the films, such as Baudrillard in specific parts (or all of Speed Racer) rather than reading the films themselves as philosophical texts.I found the discussion of the later movies particularly interesting. Many complaints centered on the action and effects overshadowing any narrative. This was also leveled against The Matrix as well. Keegan argues very eloquently that the action and the effects ARE the story as much as any other elements of the films. How the effects are used, the feelings they elicit, aren't just for entertainment or the thrills, they have meanings within the overarching narrative.This is an academic book for the most part but is quite accessible for most readers. If you are familiar with various ideas within trans studies the reading is even more accessible, but Keegan makes his meaning clear even when he uses jargon from the field of study. This is not a biography and does not get into much that isn't directly applicable to a critical assessment of the films. For that reason this might not appeal to some readers who are looking for more of a biography or a behind the scenes tell all type book. But if you have enjoyed any or all of their films, or even had mixed feelings, this book will offer new and interesting ways to "see" these movies. the interview with Lana is also a wonderful glimpse into her thinking and, what I found interesting, her sincere interest in hearing what others think.Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley.

Lana and Lilly Wachowski by Cael M. Keegan is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in mid-November.Being as I don’t practice the act of deadnaming, I’ll say that these women have always been film producers and directors. Crikey, they're extremely thoughtful and philosophically meaningful people, Keegan included, who speaks of the transmorphic act of gender matching, filmmaking, and the act of viewing film; the misreading, confining aspects of Bound (particularly poignant, since I’d recently watched its re-release on Blu-ray); the complex, dissenting, emblematic, perceptional nature of The Matrix (Matrixes? Matrix’? Matriseux?); similar dissenting qualities of V for Vendetta, yet drawing from a militarized, propaganda palette; presents Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending as a trilogy (well, okay, if you think so): lots of vehicle action, I suppose, digging and affirmation towards one’s identity, though Keegan insists on futurist themes, reaching through time and space (yes, that’s true), racial blurring/abstraction in Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer (kinda forgot about that); and, ahh, yes, Sense8, and the idea of social media mushing us all erotically together with an overall fluidity of gender and identity.

Keegan’s book makes you want to see all of the Wachowskis’ films again, especially if you’ve watched “The Matrix” dozens of times and think it has nothing new to reveal to you. Its first 25 pages will have you ready to hit the streets, demanding the recognition that “Bound” rightly deserves as an oracle of queer cinema. It recontextualizes perhaps the most impactful filmmakers of our times and persuasively argues how their trans* aesthetic creates the space available for us to imagine our own liberation. Recommended as a must-read for film lovers or anyone interested in politics or cultural studies.

While giving up and rolling into a safe little ball is tempting, Polly decides to stick it out, and draws upon her unique strengths to reach her goal and finish the race in fantastic form.This couldn't have shown up at a better time for us. We're working on guiding our 4.5yo in planning, preparing, practicing and persevering. The messages in Holy Moly Roly Poly are perfect for teaching these life skills. The book opens with scenes of Polly working out, with catchy lines acknowledging that even training and practice--and not just the final race--require determination and grit. During the course of the race, Polly experiences discouragement, and the story acknowledges that giving up isn't always a result of laziness, but that when we're vulnerable and don't think we'll succeed, it feels safe and comforting to just curl up and stop trying. Children who hesitate to try new things because they fear not being able to do them perfectly will find a friend and model in Polly as she gives herself a pep talk and overcomes negative self-talk.What we love best about this book is that the focus is *not* on winning (although Polly does win in the end) or proving anything to the critics, but on following through and finishing for the sake of finishing, and being true to oneself in accomplishing a goal. With lines like, "But then she thinks on the years, weeks, and days that she spent on the treadmill sweating away," "Keeping still in one place simply isn't her style," "She probably won't win, but she could finish this race" and "The least she can do is reach the top of the hill," Polly's encouragement comes from telling herself that she can finish what she set out to do. Impressively, the story avoids the "do your best" platitudes that can feel too touchy-feely for some parents. Polly doesn't just "do her best"--she pushes herself to overcome her own weakness in a positive way. "She puts her mind back on the goal: Come on, Polly, rock'n'unroll!" Even at the climax of the story, as it becomes clear that she's going to succeed, the line is, "Determined to finish no matter the toll." Winning isn't the focus (although she does win in the end), and not once does she concern herself with showing the other racers up. While a lot of children's books encourage perseverance, very few do so with such pure motivations.With a fantastic message, catchy lines and a fun rhyming cadence, this is sure to be a favorite for many families for years to come.

Great read aloud book! My grand kids love roly poly bugs so this was a fun story for them. Beautiful illustrations too.

With fun rhymes and silly visuals, this is a book I'm excited to read every time the kids pick it off the shelf.

What a wonderful children's book to teach the principle that sometimes the very quality we feel is holding us back is the very one that causes us to overcome. As you read this book you find yourself telling the pill bug not to give up. The word-play is incredible and the rhyming is wonderful.

The other is Tony Robbins, "Money".I have read a lot of success and motivational books in the past so I am very familiar with this line of work but somehow, this work spoke to me where most informed me. I am not sure if it is because I see myself in the author (minus the six figures) or the simple and direct way he communicates his ideas but whatever it is. I am now reading this book very slowly with pen and a highlighter because I intend to capture all the little details I may have missed the first time.In summary if this is your first motivational or success book you will find that it is money very well spent. If you have however read a lot of success books in the past and are familiar with the works of Tony Robbins and books like Rich Dad Poor Dad, then this should be a wake up call from your success snooze-feast. I wasn't sure what I was getting when I ordered it but now I'm VERY glad I bought this book.6 months to 6 figures is basically a short compendium of everything Peter learned and integrated into his life in order to reach his success. He made his first million while in his mid-20's and apparently took all the information he used to reach his success and compiled it into this book. However, keep in mind this book is more than just about financial success. In fact, that is just a very small part of it. It is a guide on healthy living, growth, and getting the most out of life.There are no fillers nor are there single concepts stretched out into 100's pages like some other books on the subject. It is concise, easy to digest, and straight to the point. It is about ACTION and even has assignments to write goals, plans, etc. This is a serious book for those serious about changing their life around or furthering their success.If you want a short guide that highlights a little bit of everything from the motivational / success library then this is a great book to have on hand. In fact, it might just be the best I've ever read on the subject.If you are serious about your growth I highly recommend you get this book.

Very repetitive and reads like a series of blog posts and lists on what to do and how to do it. Still there was value to be had. It would have been better with more examples and a little more depth in the writing to drive the points home. The key points from this for me were to get clear and be consistent. The author also recommends Miracle Morning and Four Hour Work Week.

I have to say I have read a lot of books but this one hit home for me. For too long I have been worried about reading as many books as I could get my hands on trying to improve on my entrepreneurial skills. This is a cute book, and well made. I bought it as a Christmas present, and although the pages are not at all for kids, it was still a big hit. If you are looking for a true first alphabet book, this is not what you are looking for. If you are looking for a fun baby gift for a Cowboys fan, however, this is a perfect idea.

Used this as a baby shower gift for my aunt and uncle who are huge Pats fans, they loved it! It is small, but a good size for baby and the pictures and words inside aren't affected by the book size.

Ok, it's not the best toddler book I have, but is Packers and I love it. My toddler has no idea what the words are in the pictures, but its still awesome. Don't get this unless you are a fan.

Loved getting my daughter involved early.

if you are a Giants Fan and have a new baby grandson GET THIS BOOK- great sturdy quality and wonderful price and adorable as heck- even though his father is an eagles fan He loved it as well

It's a cute book for your children. Couple things, there is a typo on one of the last pages(a misspelled word). Also I wish it had like for the letter B, B is for Brady. But it sticks to generic football things for all the letters.

Cute cute book to give as a baby gift for a Cowboys fan (which is what I did). Not your normal alphabet book for word choices for the letters but can't expect that with a NFL based theme. None the less, I think its cute, the recipient LOVED it and I'm sure the baby will too!

My 17 month old is still not into books, but when he is, he'll love this one. My wife is a Cowboys fan; I'm trying to sway him to be a Pats fan, and this book should help. Lots of words and pictures for learning.
