I have come to see this style--writing yourself into the footnotes of your own story--as the mark of someone who has witnessed a lot of human suffering. But this is not a gloom and doom story. With a dry sense of irony, Polishchuk uses his own exploits resisting the Soviet regime to paint a larger picture of human rights abuses and the absurdity of life under communist rule. Being a sarcastic, persecuted minority in a humorless society might have been a recipe for disaster or even death, and indeed, the author was incarcerated, harassed, followed, bugged, and had his ribs busted by the KGB, but none of this stopped him from his pursuit of the truth. I was captivated by the pervasive cat and mouse games, as the author dodged spies, party leaders, finks, and agents, while pursuing the stories of the persecuted and communicating them to the world outside of the USSR. I thought this stuff only happened in the movies! In spite of his self-deprecating style, Polishchuk is transformed from an idealistic journalist with a weak stomach into an unlikely superhero. Or maybe not so unlikely. After all, didn’t Superman work at a newspaper?

Arkady Polishchuk has done the world a great service by memorializing his remarkable journey from an elite Soviet journalist to a rogue dissident who attended and at great risk to himself reported on the Soviet show trials of refuseniks (Russian Jews who tried to emigrate to Israel in the 1970s). Because that wasn't danger enough for Mr. Polishchuk, his memoir also recounts how Mr. Polishchuk then adopted the cause of persecuted Baptists and Pentecostals: Mr. Polishchuk not only befriended them but also traveled to their remote villages to collect firsthand testimonies of the imprisonments, bankrupting fines and debilitating beatings (including of children) imposed or incited by Soviet authorities simply because they wanted to worship and follow Jesus. Mr. Polishchuk's fast-paced memoir demonstrates his impressive memory of the dramatic show trials of refuseniks and the harrowing details of persecution of Baptists and Pentecostals. When the peace, prosperity and religious freedom in the US have dulled our awareness of the horrific persecution that Christians face in much of the world, Mr. Polishchuk provides a timely reminder through his graphic account of the Soviets' mistreatment of Baptists and Pentecostals. Although I bought this book elsewhere, I wanted a way to express how much I enjoyed it. Enjoyed probably isn't the right word given Polishchuk's journey, but the author's biting wit reminded me of the way I felt reading Catch-22. Polishchuk's laugh-out-loud dark humor made his harrowing story a fast read.

This is the first book by Melanie Dickerson that I have ever read. I LOVED IT! I will definitely be reading her other books! It is a huge plus for me that I still have my “little girl” love of a good fairy tale princess story.It seems to be a stand-alone story even though it is the second book in a series. If characters in this book were in the first one there is enough information about them that I never felt confused as to who each person was.The characters are so wonderfully presented that I was able to connect with them and really understand them. I loved both Rapunzel and Sir Gerek. There are a number of secondary characters that I also felt a connection with.At the same time it was very easy to absolutely hate Mother Gothel and a couple of the other characters, they just oozed with evil intentions. There was no guessing as to who the “bad guys” were in this story.The story development was fantastic. It was definitely a new story for this popular fairy tale character. There were just enough elements that were kept the same so that there was no doubt as to which fairy tale it was taken from.I really enjoyed how much dependence the main characters had on God. I found it to be very refreshing and encouraging.I received a free eBook copy of this novel through NetGalley. I chose to write this review expressing my personal opinion.

As always, Melanie Dickerson delivers on sweet and clean fairytale romance. Set in the fictional town of Hagenheim Germany in 1413, Rapunzel and her Mother have just moved into town. Rapunzel's mother is...off, to put it mildly. She has it in for men and every time one shows an intrest in her daughter, she forces them to move again, which becomes more difficult the older she gets. Rapunzel loves her mother, but it is becoming clear that she needs to step back and make her own life. When she helps an injured knight on the road, she might get her chance, as well as making her greatest dream come a reality – learning to read.The characters in Golden Braid were...okay, I guess. Rapunzel was tough, but sweet as well. However I thought she spent way too much time vacillating back and forth over her decisions, it became slightly tedious to read at times. I could understand her care of her mother and fear of leaving her, but way that woman acted, I couldn't believe she took so long to come to that decision.Gerek I never got particularly attached too. The romance might have beeen sweet, but it fell a bit flat this time. It just wasn't quite up to par with her earlier works. The story was very sweet, though slow, and when the action finally came in, It was slightly difficult to follow.I highly reccomend that you read Dickerson's earlier novel - The Princess Spy - before diving into this one. It will explain a lot, and if you haven't, you might have trouble keeping up with what is happening. Things were challenging enough for me – and I did read Princess Spy first!Safety Rating: please note that it has beeen a while since I read this book and though I hope I have everything listed below, it is possible some details have been forgotten.Romance: Clean. A villain did attempt to attack a girl, but nothing came of itDrinking/drugs: none I recall.Language: cleanViolence: mild fighting, a few injuries/broken bones, and the aforementioned attack.

I mean I knew reading this book that it was a retelling of Repunzal so I knew that somehow she was the Duke's Daughter... duh.. it's obvious, but I was completely astounded as to how Melanie Dickerson made the reunion happen. It was so beautiful!! I cried and got all shivery by the feelings exchanged and the love shared. There was such wise advice given to her ( Repunzal ) by Lady Rose in the book and I found myself nodding with the truth of it. This is the most biblically profound book that I've read by Mrs Dickerson and I appreciated that. ( However, the Captive Maiden with forever be my favourite in this series.... 😊 )The description was as charming as ever, but I did find the book a little slowly paced in the beginning. It came out wonderful though and I am once again reminded of why Mrs Dickerson is my favorite author!Repunzal ~ I cried right along with her... I completely understand being one of the more emotional girls around. Plus the story of Repunzal has always been my second favorite story. Her hair was probably my favorite part of her features because I've always admired long hair, and the fact that it was blond. I loved [ although hated. ( .. ironically ) ] that she was so well guarded in her upbringing that men are dangerous. There was a good and bad side to that, but anyways... I liked that it was mentioned.Gerik ~ I have to say he is one of my favorite male lovers... ( although Valten and Collin are competing with him for first on my list ) Definitely more of a scary but sensitive guy.... which is why I appreciate him so much. I loved his dark hair and the way he tried to hide his love for Repunzal....( she was just so innocent! )This series has me all shivery and excited!! I can't wait to find out how it continues and who marries who and so forth... but now my legs are shaking!! These have got to be the best romance books I've read because the family just keeps growing and Duke William... he is such a good father! *beams* Anyways... now I have to have all of them in easy reach so I can reread them any time... now I'm rambling.*cough* Let me make this clear... my review could have been done in fewer words... Once again Claudette and her friends set out to save their town, but this time they are following her father into a dragon's den. Claudette's fieriness makes for an entertaining read, but what I love most about this series is the way Claudette doesn't succeed without her friends' help. While neither Marie nor Gaston are fighters the way Claudette is, they both possess skills and talents that come in very handy. I love the fact that Gaston loves to cook and is very good at it, but he also has a flair for magic. Marie loves to practice princess skills, but she's intelligent and diplomatic. Only together can the three of them face the dragons and a wicked sorcerer to boot. The book is full of both humor and action, but has strong themes of friendship, cooperation, and courage. The illustrations are awesomely enjoyable. A great graphic novel series for middle grade readers who enjoy action and adventure.

This is an excellent book for kids -- readers and early readers. A graphic novel with great characters, and fresh gender roles -- the princess, the pastry chef/sword maker, and the giant-hunter -- all of these have to work together to save the town while doing good. It's a story about non-violence, about adventure, about friendship, about teamwork, about community, and about dreams. The kids each have to work with their strengths and value each other's strengths to complete their epic adventure.Particularly great in that Claudette, the orange-haired hero, is a great role model for kids -- boys and girls -- about being strong and yet relying on friends and family to be stronger. The father's handicap is also a great element of the story -- not something played up; it just is. While most of the characters are peach-skinned, there are brown-skinned characters too, who just are, and that's also a great element of the story. There's a bigger message of inclusion and community strength coming from diversity itself.

This is the book that has my 6 year old son excited about reading. He will spend hours pouring over it, and it has become my ultimate "you HAVE to be quiet at this two hour funeral" tool.Dragons, hags, sorcerers, and lots of humor; it's pitched at 6 year olds, is still funny to adults, and the illustrations are fantastic. I also LOVE that the protagonist is a feisty female.

My 8-year-old son read this cover to cover, 5 times in a row. Are you kidding me??? How could I NOT rate this with 5 stars? Giants Beware was equally intoxicating to him. Maybe I should worry that the boy skipped meals to finish it "just one more time", but I'm simply grateful a book could capture his attention so thoroughly. I beg the author/illustrator to CREATE MORE BOOKS for these growing readers!

My daughter and I just finished wolfing down "Dragons Beware!" and I think this one is even better than the first! The mythology of the town and its history is deepening, and the three main characters are coming into their own. Plus some of the side characters are getting fleshed out in very interesting ways -- I am a big fan of the Apple Hag and Leon the Sentry.As we were reading we both gasped out loud at certain moments, laughed at the silly gags, and then oohed at the gorgeous purply twilight forest scenes and lush cave and waterfall spreads. And I love how the creators found a role for each of the kids' strengths to play a critical role in the climax with Azra, and the recurring themes of diplomacy and the art of negotiation, and being loyal to your friends.Can't wait for the next book!

Why is it SO HARD to find comic books – heck, books of any kind or genre – for young kids with compelling female protagonists who kick butt and aren’t looking for or being sought after by a guy? This is one of the good ones. My daughter loves it. That my own kid doesn’t look like nor has any desire to look like one of the “girls,” it’s wonderfully refreshing to SEE a drawn girl who looks like my own. More than a great story (and it is a great story), this is representation at its best. Like "Giants Beware," this is a rare gem.

my 6 year old daughter reads this book again and again. We also have Giants Beware. I love that the little girl in the book is such a nice tough and brave girl's character. We hope there are more books in the series soon!

Living in Virginia and being a native North Carolinian means I've spent my fair share of time at Colonial Williamsburg. In recent years, I've been many times just to stroll about and enjoy a good dinner. My particular favorite is Game Pie at the King's Arms.I picked up this cookbook there one day when I realized how much I loved the food! Like a critical reviewer said, many of these recipes may be found by ones or twos in other cookbooks (Williams Sonoma series comes to mind) but I've never seen them all together except in this book. After enjoying it thoroughly and getting compliments on the food, I bought more through Amazon to give as gifts and spread the love.Another note on the recipes seems pertinent for the modern cook. Many of the recipes have been brought up to date in terms of ingredients and cooking methods. An example is the prevalent use of lard, woodstoves for baking and the ubiquitous use of massive quantities of salt in traditional Virginia cooking. All these have been updated to be a bit less heavy in those areas and useful for your modern stove and oven. I have several recipes from the original time period as passed down from my own Northeastern North Carolina family and have long lamented that they are just inedible or do-able with modern methods and ingredients. I can now get a taste of them from this book.As far as content, there are a full range of recipes from Appetizers to Desserts and Beverages with everything in between. A good many of the dishes are friendly to vegetarians. And if they are choices that are good to make ahead of time or partially make ahead of time, it is generally stated for your planning ease.I've made a good half of the recipes so far and liked almost all that I have made. After I first got the book, we decided to have a full colonial Christmas and I had a houseful of happily full folks who adored the offerings. They were also happily toasted after serving Egg Nog from the book recipe, something we now do annually, but with slightly less booze!If I had one criticism it would be that I would like to see them narrow back down a bit in using local ingredients that are seasonal. By updating some of the recipes they mixed seasonal and local with imported or out of season ingredients. Most of this seems to be due to those ingredients no longer being raised locally or no longer harvested from our local ocean area or rivers, so it is a minor complaint.Whether it is the candies (we love the Bourbon Balls) or the vegetables (we love the Slaw, Celery Root Slaw, Polenta with Veg and so many more) or anything in between there is much to love. I think this is a fabulous thing to bring home from your visit or just purchase here for a few dollars less and enjoy.Cooking Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced depending on recipe.

Kind of similar to City Tavern in Philadelphia. . . .As introductory comments in this book say (Page 12): "Colonial Williamsburg's operating taverns--Christiana Campbell's, Chowning's, the King's Arms, and Shields--re-create the tastes, smells, and sounds that eighteenth-century visitors to Williamsburg and townspeople experienced. Visitors sample foods suggestive of the past but that suit modern appetites." So, we this cookbook doesn't reproduce foods exactly as they were served at these taverns. Nonetheless, the recipes are certainly evocative of the era and make for interesting reading (and I have already identified several recipes that I want to use). The book begins by discussing each of the taverns mentioned above.The first set of recipes focus on appetizers and first courses. A typical dish is Chicken stock, featuring thyme, parsley, bay leaf, peppercorns, celery ribs, carrots, onions, leeks, chicken parts and salt. Soups? One recipe that interested me was King's Arms Tavern Cream of Peanut Soup. For a Constitution Day event at Penn State Harrisburg, a caterer prepared dishes from the Revolutionary era--one of which was peanut soup. It was delicious. So I want to fix a batch of this dish--featuring butter, onion, celery ribs, flour, chicken stock, peanut butter, light cream, and chopped salt peanuts for garnish. Seems doable--and looks like it would taste good!Salads, dressings, and condiments comprise another section of this cookbook. There is Christiana Campbell's Tavern Crabmeat Salad, Shields Tavern Salmagundi, and Christiana Campbell's Tavern Slaw. Egg, cheese, and vegetarian dishes. . . . Egg and onion pie looks tempting to me. Shirred eggs with Surry sausage, Welsh rarebit with beer, bubble and squeak, and an open-faced omelette represent some examples of dishes in this section. There is a simple macaroni and cheese recipe here, too, that I aim to make within the next several days. . . .Fish/shellfish: Examples include Sea Trout Fillets Topped with Crabmeat and Dill Sauce, Curried Shrimp, and Fish Stock. And so on, with poultry recipes, meat recipes, vegetables (I love making red cabbage' this chapter has a different take on this dish, and I am intrigued to try it out), breads, cakes and cookies, desserts, and beverages (I am interested in trying the Christiana Campbell's Tavern Wassail--which includes sugar, cinnamon, lemon slices, pineapple juice, orange juice, lemon juice, red wine, and sherry).In short, lots of fun!

The reason I gave this 4 stars is that not all of the dishes are photographed and not all the photographs match the directions in the dish. I have tried a few of the recipes and have found them tasty, though I question the accuracy of some of the measurements. I was also wanting reference to a historically correct recipe along with the modernized version (there are some references just not as much as I wanted).

Growing up only 35 minutes from this historical gem of an area, I was excited to see that some of the recipes showcased in the taverns were available to try at my home. Beautiful book, well laid out and great price- they're being sold for about $11-$15 more than the Amazon price in Williamsburg itself. Good deal, great book.

Fun book. We were in Williamsburg and tasted some of the items in the book. I knew I wanted to make more of the spoon bread and salad dressings for sure. I have used some of the recipes and they're quite good.

The meals were well defined and instructions precise. There were suggestions for side dishes to accompany the described recipe.Most of the ingredients were available in most food stores. Pictures showed presentation and preparation methods.I would recommend these recipes for the experienced cook familiar with cooking from scratch ingredients.Anyone who has visited Williamsburg, VA or would like to, would very much enjoy this cookbook.

This recipe book is great. After visiting Colonial Williamsburg, I feel in love with the tavern food and was anxious to make some of my own. This book has all the great recipes, I have made several already and they were easy and very enjoyable.
