This is personally one of my top 5 chess books, if not top 3. I can see where grooten is a wonderful coach he's updated or refreshed Steinitz line of thought and brought it up to date. I feel like when I read this book your being coached by Grooten himself .Understandable, explainable and a clear cut instructional guide. This book for me is staying around til I wear it out then i'll buy it again. I do know that this book has helped my game out a lot. Buy it, you want regret it

Make no mistake, if you're a club player that wants to have all the basic teachings related to Steinitz in one book, there probably is no better book around that systematically goes through the material. It is ironic that the publisher "New In Chess" published this book because most of the ideas are 100 years old. With that said, you can win a ton of games with these ideas and players over the last 100 have done just that.The book primarily uses game and game fragments to illustrate the execution of strategic plans and reaction of those plans to the opponent's moves. It is quite obvious that Grooten is very experienced chess coach and I'd gladly take a lesson from him any time. With that said, this book is a bargain at less than 20 dollars for all the valuable information in the book. It really is a one stop shop for a complete Steinitz principles.With that said, I did give the book only four stars and it was for a reason. There were times when Grooten simply does not ask enough questions to really penetrate the finer strategic points of a position. Translating that into chess terms, he doesn't look for the really challenging moves in certain positions and then provide a clear and coherent positional assessment on why one side is better. In fact, very few authors have the ability to really elucidate why one side is better but instead provide assertions with no proof. This is a shortcoming of this book as well, albeit a minor one. Also, there were times during the book when the author presented the material as if he had been the original discover. Theory of two weaknesses was one such example. I know that he was simply trying to exhibit how HE discovered it, but plenty of material is already devoted to exploiting two weaknesses dating back to at least Nimzowitch. This could have been a problem with the translation from Dutch to English, but I'm not quite sure. Finally, certain subjects are just glossed over with limited discussion. This is forgivable because the book is already 400 pages and I'm sure that the publisher has something to say about a 700 page book for something under 20 dollars.In summary, this is an excellent book for those who are good at self study. It actually is even decent for those who like ideas and information spoon fed to them much in the vain of Pandolfini. I would highly recommend this book to anyone really interested in understanding the basic principles so they can later on understand the exceptions (which is what Grandmasters do in almost every one of their games because they are tactically skilled and understand that dynamic chess is the part of the Steinitz school that really wasn't integrated very well). So, go and by with the confidence that if you spend time really systematically reading this book, the strategic ideas will become second nature.

I have a love-hate relationship with this book. I love it because it is far-and-away the single best strategy and position-assessment book I have read. I hate it because it could have been so much better, and Grooten is certainly good enough to have made it better in the ways that I think it could have been better. Since the review is 5-stars, you can stop here and consider my recommendation for this book superlative. However, I am going to start out by saying what was wrong with the book, after which I will talk about what’s so great.The negative comments made in some of the other reviews are spot on, such as the lack of organization of the book. I really felt like some publisher or editor saw an instant classic in the works and rushed it to sale for the sake of dollar signs. The biggest substantial problem with the book, which truly indicates to me that it was either rushed by an editor/published or for the sake of winning a chess book of the year award is that there are many, many critical places in the text where Grooten doesn’t answer this simple question: why? I don’t think there’s a chapter where Grooten says something, makes some assessment, or the like, and takes the reasoning as tacit. I’m becoming very strong amateur player (officially USCF tournament peak of 1608, and probably getting close to A-class or Expert strength), and I’ve absolutely never had this problem before. This problem isn’t so chronic that it ruins the book. Grooten is definitely teaching a great many things, but the punch line from a number of mini-lessons is simply missing. I’ve been training with a GM, so he’s been able to fill me in on what Grooten was trying to say. I think this all could have been avoided by having an A-class or Expert read the book, so that he or she could let him know that there was some critical piece of explanation missing. There is a general explanatory problem in a couple of his chapters, such as the one on piece harmony, in which case a little bit more detail was needed on a few points; but this is not as big a concern as the previous concern. Another big issue with the book is that some of Grooten’s examples have multiple themes working, not just the one that is being emphasized. In fact, sometimes the emphasized theme isn’t the most important aspect of the example. This could have been rectified by picking less complex examples where the theme is exhibited in greater isolation –and this can be a problem very easily, given the holistic nature of chess, with all the intertangled themes in so many positions. Grooten also contradicts some notable authors on a few things, and probably didn’t realize it, and so he never explained. For example, in the chapter on passed-pawns, he talks about the side with the passed-pawn wanting to exchange the minor pieces. What? Lev Alburt and Jeremy Silman both said that minor piece push and halt passed-pawns, so keep them on the board! I did not think for a minute that Grooten was wrong, but that there was something different about Grooten’s examples and those of Alburt and Silman’s. The difference was how advanced the pawns are. With a space advantaged generated by a far passed-pawns, activity of the opposing pieces are reduced if those pieces are rooks rather than knights and bishops. (Notice how I’ve just mentioned that space and activity are thematic in this chapter, though it is supposed to be about the passed-pawn.) It took me and my coach about an hour to examine Grooten’s, Silman’s, and Alburt’s examples to figure out what the deal was. All of the other issues I had with the book are much less than these.What’s great about the book? The book is structure around Steinitz’ elements; which is to say, the objective and idea behind the book is really solid, and it lends to the effectiveness of the text. I also think that the book is enjoyably written –Grooten is anything but a boring writer, so that should not be a concern. I’ve read a number of strategy and position-assessment books, and this is by far the best. This area of chess is lacking in quantity and quality literature. In a space almost exclusively dominated by a few classics, this book is the most in-depth and expansive book I have come across. The amount of quality ideas and content this book contains is unreal; it really is. Not only that, I think it serves a large field of readers. Ideally, I think the book is best for 1600-2200, but it is very easily accessible to any player under 800. Even at a USCF rating of 800, a great many of the concepts this book teaches can be assimilated. The thing is that, as with all classics, the book requires reading and re-reading. I am very confident that, with each pass through this book, I will develop much more knowledge than I previously possessed. For the unclarity that some parts of Grooten’s text suffers in some places, it more than makes up for in other places. That’s why I am disappointed in some regards, because most of the book is simple exceptional and crystal clear. To give you some idea, if you thought “Chess for Post-Beginners” by Srokovsky was good, this one is world’s better. In fact, that book purports to be aimed at players 1400-2200 (and it’s received rave reviews), yet the analysis in this book is much deeper, more thorough, and the explanations a bit lengthier for clarity.One thing that should be noted is that this is a difficult book in a number of ways. Grooten even says that the reader should not sweat it if he or she does not get the solutions to exercises. One friend, a very positional 1500-level USCF player, said that the book was tough but manageable. A very tactical player (1850’s USCF) and friend, who is weak positionally, said that the book was extremely tough. For me, I thought the book was challenging because Grooten sometimes assumes that you see the tactics that are forcing situations. Finding the tactics, whenever he doesn’t fill in the details, can be seen as a tactics puzzle. You can tell that this text is fairly high-level, because positional strength and weakness is tied in very closely with the tactics and threats required to achieve strategies; again, chess has a kind of holism at work.Excellent book. I recommend it to any player under 2200.

We just discovered felting - it is fun. Wanted to get a book for design ideas and basic instructions, and after the 10th book with instructions on how to make bunnies, puppies and kittens I ran into this one! Not that there is anything wrong with bunnies, they are cute - but how many of them can you make before it gets boring? This book gives out-of-the box ideas. Not all the designs will be to everyone's liking (making a cigar out of felt is as appealing to me as a spoonfull of castor oil), but that could probably be said of any project book. On the other hand, some of the projects are really fun and creative (bracelets, monsters, yo-yos), and make you realize there is a world of possibilities out there.As other reviewers pointed out, most of the projects focus on 3d objects, but it gives the basics on how to felt flat objects too. There are not a lot of patterns to cut and follow exactly - but lots of whimsical ideas that you can modify, or elaborate on, and all the basic information you need to take off creating designs of your own.I would recommend this book to anyone looking for clear instructions, and out of the ordinary ideas.

I've been looking for a book to get me started on felting. The videos on youtube just weren't doing it for me. This book took me from, "whaaaaaaa?" to "ooooohhhhh, I get it now" in a matter of minutes. Since everyone learns differently, I suggest using the 'search this book' feature and see if Moxie gets through to you like she did for me. I don't know that I would do the projects in this book (although the voodoo doll earrings are pretty danged cool), but it was fun seeing what someone who thinks outside of the traditional has done with felt. Warning: This is a highly addictive craft! You've been warned ;)

Being a new felter, I bought this book on a whim. Aside from the wonderfully clear (yet not condescending) instructions, it would have been totally worth it just for the Voodoo doll earrings. I'm still laughing, so I can't start making them yet or I will end up poking myself.

I have to say, I love Moxie's sense of humor and her quirkiness. She says she's a self-taught needle felter and this has become a nice addition to my set of books. Her projects are fantastic and fit right in with my bizarre sense of humor. (Sheep of the Dead Finger Puppet!!) I've learned how to turn some of my felted "stuff" into jewelry and look for unique things to add to my felting.Thanks for writing such an entertaining book!

I just bought this book a couple of weeks ago. Of course, I'm not making the actual projects LOL but as a n00b to felting with her own ideas of what she wants to accomplish, this book has been extremely helpful and I'm made numerous things (beads, a bangle similar to the one in the book, working now on a diorama in a teacup!) that I could never have done until I got the book. Eventually, I will get around to making the projects because they look like fun.I also really enjoyed the author's silly humor - she made me laugh several times while I was reading it.

I saw an interview with the author and liked her so much I had to find her book. Sadly, it's a bit too quirky for me but I wish she was my neighbor!

I am the proud owner of over a dozen MadebyMoxie finger puppets and two way cool rings. When I heard a book was in the works, and soon to be released I was so excited! THIS BOOK ROCKS!!! It exceeded my expectations. This is a fun book! Here is what I liked ... Very, very informative as to the tools and instruction. (It is like Moxie is right there walking you through everything.) The tone is TOTAL humor! (You can tell this gal loves what she does.) The projects are varied enough that there is something for everyone. PLUS each project shows a different process and gives more tips. All of this is done with bold, colorful photos, and tons of energy. The title of the book really says it perfectly ... Tips and Tricks ... she has a ton of them. I also liked the resources listed at the end of the book. When you get YOUR copy make sure you don't miss the bottom of page 142. Thanks Moxie! I "felt" awesome reading your book! When is the next awesome book coming out! MORE PROJECTS!

 This is a coloring book filled with 31 interesting patterns with a mandalas type vibe. The artist involved with this book, John Wik, has done several other Creative Haven books on tesselations and other geometric shapes. While some of his previous books have been reprints, this one does not appear to be one. I don't own any of his other books, so this one is, at the very least, new to me. The shapes are very interesting and call for lots of colorThere are 31 designs in this coloring book which are printed on bright white perforated paper that is a fairly heavy stock. The designs are printed on one side of the page only. I usually like to remove my projects from the books to work on and I love that Creative Haven always makes it easy for me to do so.All of my gel pens and markers bleed through on Creative Haven books to varying degrees. I use chip board, cardstock, or freezer paper in between the sheets (if I am keeping it in the book) or under the page if I remove it from the book.

Oh I just love this book! My husband saw it and wanted this picture and that one and I ended up purchasing two so he could have his own! There are 31 mandala type pictures to color - these are best described (by me anyway lol) as a mandala that is mixed with geometric design. All of the pages have a centered mandala in the middle and as the mandala expands, the geometric aspect tends to get larger or more pronounced and I just love this - quite a nice and unique twist on traditional mandala books. The way the pages are designed, it is up to the user as to what medium to use and due to the type of design, you can easily use pencils and have the room to blend colors or just use pens and/or markers and color them withoug the need to blend colors. I have completed a few pages and on one I picked four primary colors and four secondary colors (all gel pens) and the end result was really fantastic. On another page, I used pencil only and as the mandala shape spread, I took my colors and blended them and got another awesome finished page. Of note, my husband colored a couple of the same pictures that I did using different medium and it was like looking at a different picture - so this is a book where your imagination can take you anywhere! I did not have any problems at all with the gel pen page I colored, none of them leaked through or caused any issue with the paper. I have used markers in this book and they do bleed through so if you do not remove pages from your book you will need to use some chip board or a couple of pages of copy paper to prevent damage to the following page. All designs are printed in high quality resolution and on one side of the page only. All pages are perforated for easy removal. The paper is a decent quality white and as stated, no problems with pencils, gel pens or markers. This is a great book and I just love the designs that John Wik put in this book - looking forward to perhaps a second book like this!

I have gotten quite a few of the Creative Haven coloring books... they are great... The pages are perforated, one-sided, and fairly thick. Also every picture has a border so you don't have to color off the edge of the page.The lines in this book are smooth and the detail is perfect for gel pens or fairly narrow tipped markers. Pencils would work easily, too. While I prefer some of the animal or picture type designs, these "Dimensions" designs are very easy to get intrigued in and can be colored to look 3-D (even sometimes by accident).

This is the fourth coloring book I have purchase from the Creative Haven line. I have been very pleased with each and every one of them. The thing I like best is that the pages are perforated. This makes them easier to color because you don't have to try to color in the curve of the book. It also makes it easy for two people to color pages from the same book (my grandson loves to color with me). This book is especially intriguing as the images really do appear to be 3 dimensional.

Bought three coloring books for the staff I work with at the hospital for Christmas. We work in a high stress area but during the down time we often have little to do. All RN's, we have many hobbies we would LIKE to do...knitting, sewing, the like but for whatever reason they are frowned upon. SO, I took a chance and bought these for STRESS RELIEF. I was a bit nervous wondering the reception but WOW was I surprised!Even the Doctors waited their turn, now no one minds being on call for the chance to "color" in peace.We have plans to hang our ART in the room as if we are preschoolers as we finish the pictures. Everyone loved the idea, SOME of the nurses had t be spoken to about hoarding the pencils.....

Originally was going to send this back for an exchange, because this book was not properly packaged, and the cover was slightly damaged, and torn. I never got around to it, almost a year it sat still in the damaged package. Now decided to color in it, as to not waste it, and I'm really loving it!! It's not easy for me to complete coloring book pictures, but this book really draws you in to your design, and also insight into my life! (For me anyway)--I would get this book again, but hopefully not damaged!

I love coloring the designs in this book they are right on and relaxing to color. The perforated pages are easy to tear out and the thickness of the pages makes them perfect for an array of different kinds of coloring materials. I am going to buy more of these Creative Havens books and recommend them for your coloring enjoyment.

As usual Creative Haven does not disappoint me! This book is a lot of fun as anything can be accomplished color wise with these drawings! Having lots of fun deciding what approach to take with each new page. Heavy nice paper, perforated pages with drawings one sided, all sorts of unique designs to color as your heart wishes.
