About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK. The pictures in this book are great and bright.

My 16 month old loves this book; the small size is great for her little hands. My only negative comment is that some of the names of the animal are very technical. One example: "Terrapin" instead of being general and calling the animal a TURTLE. My baby can't read yet, so I just call it a turtle so this isn't a big deal right now.

The Priddy board books are top notch choices for an infant/toddler's first books. They're sturdy, provided a lot of interest, and cover a good range of topics. First 100 Words is probably the most common point of entry for many in this series (and probably the best).First 100 Animals isn't bad by any means. However, across 106 entries it duplicates a few animals. There are three entries for owl with one distinguished by name (snowy owl - so I allow them this one) but the other two left without clarification. I'll even allow them the entries where the young version of the animal has a different name (puppy for dog, kitten for cat, etc.). In the case of the Lion entry one is make while the other is female (with no indication to the reader). Then there's two undistinguished entries for penguin (different pictures, but no other notes).Overall I'd recommend the First 100 series highly, but there's also plenty to nitpick.

The book we received doesn't look exactly like the one pictured (with a blue cover) but, that doesn't detract from the fact that it's a good, sturdy book for children. Some of the animals repeat within the book so it's not truly 100 animals. Also, for some of the animals, the book shows a close up, cropped picture instead of a full body picture which we don't feel is so great. For example, the picture of a squirrel shows the head, arms and partial body but not the bushy tail that a squirrel is known for and that would help a child identify the animal in real life.

I love this series, and this book is great and separates out the animals by category (pets, farm, regional). I'm only giving it 4 stars instead of 5, because the one I have, the cover is different hues of blue and is not as attractive to my toddler. The original (First 100 Words) he grabs all the time, but this one stays behind a lot, and I think due to the cover's colors being subdued. However, the inside is just as bright as expected.A few mentioned it was "small," but I think its the perfect size for a toddler. Since I already had one of this series, I knew what to expect. Its about size of an adult hand, slightly larger maybe. Nice thick cardboard pages, easy for toddler to flip through.

My daughter loves these books, this one is her favorite. I purchased this book for my daughter when she was around 7 months old, she loved it then and loves in now at 1.5 years old. She loves pointing to the pictures and saying what they are. I often see her flipping through the pages with our dog. I would recommend this book for infants/toddlers.

My one year old loves this book. He loves looking at real (not cartoon) pictures of animals and making the animal sounds. This book is a great size as well. I bought it to be a "to go" book...one to throw in the diaper bag for him to look at in the car, at restaurants, while waiting at the doctor, etc. We enjoy the bigger versions of the "First 100" books as well, but definitely prefer the size of this one to be taken along with us.

The book itself is very sturdy and well made. I have bought several of these first 100 books in the series and although I think they are still a bit too advanced for my daughter (she's around a year), right now she enjoys looking at the pictures and colors. I imagine as she gets older her interest and focus will shift more to the words themselves.

I give this book a big 5 stars. I bought this book for my 16 month old son who is just beginning to learn his animals. I wanted a great picture book to teach him and this one is wonderful!Pros: Great colorful pictures!Great learning tool for toddlers.The book itself is large making it an easy page turner for chubby little fingers.It's a board book so it might survive my destructive toddler.Cons: Too many animals that are not suitable to teach a younger child (think toddler-4 years old). There are animals like meerkat, orangutan, cockroach, and platypus. I wish they would have stuck with more "basic" animals geared towards smaller kids.Overall: Love this book and would recommend. The age on this book does say 0+ so I just wish there weren't so many strange animals for young kids who are just learning the basics.

I think that this is a very good book for family who has kids in their house. I and my son liked this book very much. We read it with great pleasure. I was looking for a great bedtime story book with short stories, that weren't remakes of all of the fairy tales, and that weren't sponsored by Disney or the like. This was perfect. I found this book in a Marquette bookstore. If you are interested in waterfalls of Michigan's U.P. and photography this will probably be worthwhile. It is full of B&W photographs of various waterfalls. It is not the best reference guide for finding the waterfalls (for this look to Penrose's Guide to 199 Michigan Waterfalls). However, it is full of large format camera (i.e. sharp detail) pictures of the waterfalls. I personally think this is one of C.J Elfont's better efforts compared to his other books. In addition there are no other books which try to present the U.P.'s waterfalls with such nice photographs. For photographers there is nice documentation of the camera settings and type of camera used. Again it is all black and white photos.

These three works in some ways develop the characters Blake used in the three Continental Prophecies. But don't expect any kind of coherent development or to be able to fathom out any kind of understandable timeline. This is Blake after all. Most of this book is helpful introduction, commentary, notes, and supplementary materials."The First Book of Urizen" is the longest of the three and the most illustrated. It has images that are absolutely unforgettable. They have a power and emotional impact that holds the viewer. I have met people who find them repulsive. I think the emotional impact makes them uncomfortable so they want to get away from the images and so push them away."The Book of Ahania" and "The Book of Los" are much shorter and the illustrations are limited to the title page and the last plate ("The Book of Los" also has an illustration on the opening page of text.). The other pages are done in particularly fine Blake script.As with the rest of the volumes in this series the quality of reproduction is very high and these images are delightful to study. The scholarship is quite good and the writing is focused on opening these works up to the general reader - at least a general reader who enjoys studying Blake and is willing to put in the time it takes to fathom these rather wonderfully strange works. A treasure for the shelf of any Blake lover.

I recommend that any fan of William Blake buy this volume and the other 5 in the series. The books are beautiful, large, and handsomely bound. Each book is reproduced in full color, using a six-color printing process rather than the standard four. The pages are heavy, opaque and have a gorgous lustre indicating very high quality paper. This book takes the reader on a chronological journey through the development of six important innovations: glass, cold, sound, clean, time, and light. It does a beautiful job of conveying factual information clearly, while also painting a larger picture of how collaboration and determination drive technological advancement. The combination of broad thematic ideas and more challenging sentence structure makes this a perfect text to discuss as a class or in small close reading groups.As another review mentioned, there is one mention of sex in the "Light" chapter, in reference to human nighttime routines. Don't let you put this off from teaching this book or using it in the classroom! Given the fact that it is brief and non-graphic, this reference seems to me (while not ideal given the giggle factor) appropriate for a 5/6th grade classroom, especially given the overall content of the book.

How We Got to Now was originally published for an adult audience. When they were making the television series for PBS they wanted to attract a younger audience (younger than retirement age). What happened was that families were enjoying the series with their grade school students – that is how this book came about.There is a lot of fascinating information in the book showing the history of glass, cold, sound, clean, time, and light. As is usually the case, the author’s world view comes out in his writing. There are multiple references to the age of the earth which support an evolutionary stand point. Some of them really didn’t seem to be necessary – most of the time, the story could have been told without the reference to millions of years – I usually tell me students “a long time ago”. There are also references to things which are not provable – there are no eyewitness reports to what the author presents – for example how glass was first formed is speculation not verifiable fact.There is one reference of even greater concern given the intended audience of the book. During the discussion of light, the author mentions that before artificial light “When darkness fell, they drifted into ‘first sleep’ and woke after four hours or so to snack, relieve themselves, have sex, or chat by the fire.” The comment about having sex could just as well been left out for the intended audience of upper elementary and middle school students. Librarians need to keep these things in mind when determining if this book is appropriate for their audience.The chapter on Glass takes the reader from how glass was possibly formed for the first time, before recorded history, through the development of glass production and uses to the many ways glass is used today in our everyday lives. In the chapter on Cold we are exposed to the first person who attempted to sell ice in the tropics, through the uses of ice as they were developed in the food industry, to the discovery of how to keep homes and buildings cool even in the hottest months. Sound moves from the acoustics in caves on to the use of a cadaver ear for experimentation to the creation of the telephone and radio. Cleanliness isn’t something we necessarily think about all the time, yet in Clean we learn about the lack of cleanliness in the 19th Century. The development of sewage drainage, is followed by the importance of hand washing and then the sneaky way in which chlorinated water was first introduced. Time – it didn’t matter in the beginning what time it was on a clock. As the world changed and became more industrialized, time became more important – time zones were developed. As time became more important, the need for more and more accurate clocks came about. The book ends with a chapter on Light which looks at life before artificial light, the creation of candlelight, the discovery of sperm whales, the use of fossil fuels, and the creation of light bulbs.In each of these chapters we learn about the different players who got us from then to now. In many cases there was more than one person headed to the same goal and one invention depended on the findings of someone else. The book really shows the interconnectedness of science.I want to thank Viking – Penguin Books for the review copy in exchange for my honest review. While this book is designed for upper elementary students, I will be placing it in the secondary section of the school library where I work. I encourage librarians to get a copy and read it for themselves to determine if How We Got To Now by Steven Johnson is appropriate for their audience.

Most people take for granted small luxuries that weren't available to the masses a few years ago. The book reminded me of my history textbooks but, this was definitely more fun to read.
