Plus there was a great bonus chapter on making portraits! The help on hand positions were vital, like the knee tripod, bazooka hold, using a prop etc.Before downloading this I just checked out the rating of some other books and compared to them this one really stood out. And I am glad I was not disappointed. I particularly liked the extra photos given at the end of the book. They were great examples, though if those images went along with the explanations about those particular types, i.e. landscapes, portraits, black or white etc. it would have been more suitable in my opinion.

I didn't find this book (I got it on Kindle) to be very well written or organized at all. I was able to pick a couple tips out of it but I had to wade through a lot of fluff in order to get it. I wouldn't have minded the fluff if it was all in one place but it was spread through out. I was looking for a good combination of details about the relationship between the complexities of a camera and specific examples and I didn't find that here. I ended up getting this instead and liked it a lot better: The Beginner's Photography GuideSave your time and money and keep looking.

I've been thinking of upgrading to a DSLR camera but I had no idea what features to look for or even how to use one if and when I did buy it. And then I saw this book. Author Dwayne Brown explains all about DSLR photography in simple to follow fashion. This book is perfect for a beginner like me but I can see how even someone who has been using a DSLR for a while could get a lot from it too. Not only does Mr. Brown go into the features of a DSLR camera, he also gives some great advice on setting up your shots. Highly recommended!

I just finished reading this book. And this one of my best purchases. Photography is one of my hobbies and this book has everything that you need to help you get the best out of your camera. The author, Dwayne Brown, shows that having a camera does not make one a photographer, knowledge and practice does. He has a great deal to share with his readers right down to how to hold the camera. Overall, this was a great guide and I learned a ton about photography and I'm inspired and excited to learn even more, and its easy to fallow the tips. I highly recommend this great book.

To be honest I'm still waiting for my boyfriend to give me my DSLR for Christmas, he told me not to open it until Christmas which is terrible! This book gave me a great tutorial on what to do and not to do :) I also love the bonus! It is great to have an author about photography that can explain how easy it is to be somewhat a professional with DSLR Photography. Where do I start? Lori Foster rocketed to the top of my favorite authors list the moment I started reading When You Dare from her Edge of Honor series. She has stayed there because every book I’ve read after, has made me love her writing more and more. No Limits has just added to the greatness once again. When I first heard that Lori had come out with another MMA series, I about squealed my husband’s hearing away. The great thing about No Limits is, not only do you fall in love with the main character of the book, but you get the chance to fall in love with the secondary characters as well. I loved being able to read about characters from previous books. Basically, there is no losing when you read one of Lori Foster’s books. The way she writes her characters and the humor and comradery is beyond amazing to me. I actually feel like I am right there with them. I already recommend Lori Foster to all my friends and random people at the library. Now I must remember to add a note to keep their eyes out for the Ultimate series. They won’t regret it and neither will you. Happy Reading!!

This book was fantastic. One of Ms. Foster' s best to date and that is saying a lot because I don't think she's written a bad book. I loved the characters. Connor and Yvette were perfect for one another. He was a tough MMA fighter who had inherited some property with Yvette. This brings her back to town and in close proximity to him. From that point on, the gloves are off, so to speak, and he sets out to win her over. He is so loving, so romantic and so sexy you can't help but fall for him. And though she is struggling with some issues, he is so patient with her and willing to work through it with her. Of course there are some wonderful secondary characters, sexy fighters and an element of danger included that will keep you turning the pages. Definitely recommend.

3.5 StarsI wasn't so sure of this book during the first half, I had a hard time relating to Yvette and Cannon, but as the book progressed I really got into the story.Yvette and Cannon have a past, and haven't seen each other for three years, when they are thrown together again, Cannon is happy to finally have a chance with Yvette, and Yvette is trying to get Cannon not to see her as the girl who left three years ago and a girl who needs protecting.I was frustrated with Yvette many times in this book, any one could see how much Cannon cared about her, but she refused to see it and seemed to push him away at every turn at first. I adored Cannon and how much he wanted to prove to Yvette he was the guy for her and how much he cared for her. He never pushed her, and only seemed to care about her. I understood his frustration with her many times in this book, especially when she refused to trust him, or let him in.When Yvette finally let Cannon in, I felt this story got so much better. They were dealing with the Heath situation together, and Yvette was trusting Cannon, and they were able to work through issues and start to build a future together. I loved how cave man Cannon would get regarding Yvette and what he would do to protect her. He loved her so much and his character was definitely swoonworthy!Not only is Cannon amazing, but so are all of his friends. Each of them saw how much Yvette meant to him, and embraced her into their inner circle and were there for her no matter what. Armie became like a big brother to Yvette and I loved him. He may seem like a big bad fighter, but you can tell under everything he has a heart of gold and he cares for his "family". I can't wait to read his story soon!This book was frustrating at times, with Yvette and Cannon circling one another for a large part of this book and not moving forward or backwards, but at times I adored this book and the characters. The last few chapters of this book were absolutely the best, and I wish we would have gotten more of the drama that we got in those chapters throughout the whole book. I really liked how Yvette and Cannon's story ended and hope to see more of them in future installments of this series!

She doesn't always trust in his feelings for her since he turned her down years ago. But Cannon knows what he wants and he wants Yvette and is willing to prove himself and wait until she is ready for him. This book has no cliffhanger and secondary characters will get books (YAY for Armie!!)

Brief summary and review, no spoilers.This fantastic story begins at the Swan, an inn located on the bank of the Thames. (Or perhaps it isn’t the Thames?) We do know it is the night of the winter solstice but we don’t know what year. You see, everything is deliberately a little vague as in any good fairy tale or myth; its meaning and relevance being universal and timeless.When we start the book we soon learn the good folks at the Swan all love to tells stories, with each person trying to outdo the other. Their night is interrupted when an obviously large but injured man falls into the Swan carrying a lifeless little girl.The very skilled and beloved nurse Rita is called in to help. She is able to stitch up and save the man but the little girl seems dead. But then, surprising everyone, it turns out she isn’t.I don’t want to give much more away; it’s so much better and more fun finding out what happens next as the author intended - but I will say that there are several people in the village and just beyond who have an interest in this little girl and believe she belongs to them. Their motivations often as confusing to us the readers as it is to them. Most of these people are of good heart and most all seem to love her.It is only at the end that most of our questions are answered.I took over a week to read this book - I normally would read it in a day but I was so in love with it that I would read a few chapters and stop; it’s that good and I didn’t want it to be over. Whenever I picked it up and started reading I was completely transported to this mythic, wonderful place populated with the most wonderful characters. I didn’t want to leave, at the same time I desperately wanted to know what happened next,It’s not important for me to have to like a character to like a book, but in this case you find yourself rooting for and caring about so many of them. Each character is so three-dimensional and the dialogue so spot and and often funny. Quirky in the best way.The story itself is marvelous, but it’s the wonderful prose that makes this book one of my favorites. I have dog-earred so many pages (if I threw it across the room I think it might fly) because I thought certain sentences or descriptions were so clever and evocative. But as secret visitors to this world, as border crossers between one world and another, there is nothing to prevent us sitting by the river and opening our ears; then we will know it too.”I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is so filled with heart and wonderful characters - even the river becomes one. Every once in a while, when I finish a book and turn the final page, I will clutch the book and experience a “reader’s high” for lack of a better phrase. It’s the most wonderful feeling and I got it with this book.Recommended.

This is the most long winded book I think I've ever read. It's been a long time since a book has given me feelings of dread every time I picked it up.Although I've never read a book by this author, I was nonetheless excited to dive into this one based on the rave reviews for not only this book but for Setterfield's The Thirteenth Tale. Not every author and/or book is for everybody and this one was certainly not my glass of chocolate milk.While the prose is without a doubt prolific, the story crawled at an excruciating pace with pages and pages of descriptive text. Some have commented that the prolonged details are necessary in the telling of the story, I humbly disagree. There are a ton of characters in this story and while they are all fleshed out to the nth degree, I didn't care about or relate to any of them.There is a lot of magic, as well religious undertones in this story, both of which turned me off immediately as I tend to steer clear of those subjects.I realize that I am in the tiniest of minority of people that feel this book fell way short of expectations while most every other reviewer fell in love with this book. I do not discourage readers from picking this one up for that reason alone.2 Stars for the writing ⭐⭐I was provided an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I read about 2 books per week, so I have read a lot of books. This one is special. It is definitely on my Best of the Year list, and I strongly recommend it to everyone. I see that some reviewers have listed the pace as "slow". At first, when reading it, this book was hard to get into, but then I realized that the problem was ME. The writing is so very good that it deserves more than little snatches of my reading time. In reading it, I realized that I had become somewhat addicted to the little, 2 and 3 page chapters of many of today's books. This one requires a bit more of the reader, but, in return, the reader is rewarded with a splendid story, a remarkable resolution, and some of the best writing that I have read all year. Highly recommended.

Once Upon a River is an interesting novel with lots of twists and turns. When a young mute girl is pulled near-frozen from the river, multiple families lay claim to her, each with their own reasons to suspect she is their missing relative. The author does a wonderful job of creating and exploring a large number of rich, complex characters. While the plot focuses on the mystery of the girl, the book itself is largely character-driven. I thought the ending was a bit of a sell-out, but I enjoyed the book enough until then to still think favorably of it.What I really didn't like about the book was the numerous instances of domestic violence against both women and children. I realize the author was trying be authentic in terms of the frequency of such acts given the setting (1800s England). Still, it was extremely hard to read over and over again about multiple characters being abused. Sometimes these were just passing references and other times more detailed accounts. If this is something you find triggering, don't read this book.

What an insanely good book. I am a huge fan of The Thirteenth Tale and so treated myself to Once Upon A River as a Christmas gift to myself. Others have summarized it adequately so I won't do so here but if you enjoyed Thirteenth Tale do yourself a favor and don't wait on this book. It is beautiful and poignant and intricately woven into a story of love, loss, and redemption. So many wonderful characters, so many perfectly described settings, and just enough magic and mystery to keep you hooked until the wee hours. I gorged it in two marathon settings over two nights and I will be going back for a more leisurely read as well. I fail to understand anything less than a 5 star review and those who say it is slow or plodding simply don't get this author's wonderful prose which for me borders on the poetic.

While this book provides a welcomed insight into the far-reaching economy of the Roman Empire, I do have some issues with it. My major concern is with how McLaughlin arrived at his estimate for the empire's revenues. He uses "snapshot" data to determine yearly revenue for the first two hundred years of the empire. By "snapshot" I mean that the author picks pieces of data from disparate points in time and regions in the empire and assumes that this data applies across the empire for two hundred years. I find this highly questionable. He then goes on to state that the 25% tax on imports made up one-third of the empire's revenue. However, with the figures for the tax income from other sources being so tenuous, this statement is also questionable.Regardless of these issues, the book contains a great deal of valuable information. The author details Roman trade across the Mediterranean to Egypt, Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, and even China (to use the modern names). He also clearly explicates the huge trade imbalance that existed between the empire and eastern kingdoms. Roman society coveted the spices, incenses, jewels, and ivory available in the East, but the empire had no comparable goods valued by eastern kingdoms except silver and gold. This meant that bullion was constantly drained from the empire, a situation that was only tenable as long as the mines were operating and/or new sources could be discovered. He then details how this very fragile arrangement was destroyed by the fifteen-year Antonine Plague. The plague not only decimated the Roman Empire (one-third or more of the population and legionaries may have died or been permanently incapacitated), but threw the entire trade system into chaos. Kingdom after kingdom in the East fell and the Roman Empire was invaded by "barbarians" who were not as severely affected by the plague.The modern world tends to believe that it created global trade in the 18th century. As McLaughlin shows, the Roman Empire had a robust trade system that encompassed Europe, Africa from the Horn north, and a great deal of Asia. The variety of goods and the lengths empire merchants went to obtain them, is truly staggering. And the fragility of the system should make us consider our own economic systems since our economies are even more interconnected.

Fascinating, well researched publication of what is rarely discussed in many historical material about the Roman Republic/Empire period. In particular I am enthralled by the descriptions of the trade routes via the Indian Ocean which more than doubled the empire's wealth, and the quite fascinating bureaucratic/ administrative organisation of the empire, including its clever taxation system, that ensured the longevity of a quite extraordinary realm. Still only half way through a marvellous book that I would recommend to anyone wanting a deeper knowledge of how the Roman/Republic was able to survive almost a thousand years and then pass the baton of knowledge to the Byzantium Empire, and even influence so much of our modern world.

Very interesting and entertaining. I was unaware the Romans had reached China by sea (to what is now Haiphong, Vietnam) rather than overland. The economics are stressed (particularly Rome's negative balance of silver outflow) but the stories of Dead Sea "balm" and not-counterfeit Indian-made Roman coinage are fascinating. Can be slightly repetitive, but well written, obviously very well researched, and a good read. Highly recommended.

Wow! Overload of data and information. Much could have organized into tables; maps should have been included.Difficult for average reader to stick with it to the end. Appendices are very worthwhile. Very useful for serious research of Roman history.

You can study history through many different lenses to focus on different aspects of what happened. Author McLaughlin goes into great detail about the economics of the Roman Empire, using a mix of hard economic data and anecdotes. He talks about both the big picture of how Rome worked as an empire, and how individual Romans lived. That's the best of both worlds. We're given a reason to care about why the big picture mattered without getting bogged down in minor points about how "those guys really loved pepper". The focus here is on the first and second centuries CE, the peak of trade.The book gets a little repetitive at times. But parts of it read like an adventure story! We get to see how Roman traders explored farther and farther into the Indian Ocean, and what they thought about the specific ports they established or made contact with. For instance, what was it like being a caravan guard riding east of the Nile: what were you guarding, where did you rest, who was funding it, what kind of equipment did you have? This book covers that sort of question while explaining why it all mattered. We see Roman trade and luxury at their height, and then why and how it went wrong.I read this book while actually visiting Pompeii and Rome, so it helped give me a feel for how people actually lived in these dusty ruins I was looking at. Great work.

This is a really well written history of the Roman Empire from a completely different perspective. Very well researched, it brings in aspects of the ancient world that are often overlooked by authors who are more focused on what happened within the geographic boundaries of the empire and the wars it fought rather than the world that it was a part of. Highly recommended for anyone who is familiar with the history of the Roman republic and empire

This is a fantastic book! This book is solely responsible for taking me to almost every country in Europe to view the incorruptible saints mentioned in this book! As a Catholic, this is one of the books that I highly recommend, and the book that I give to those that want to know more about the Cathoic Church. Thanks to this book and my travels throughout Europe in search of these saints, I have given close to 100 group presentations on the lives of these incorrupt saints.

Fascinating book. I think it is probably safe to say that most of this information is not known to the average person. The lives of the saints, their incorrupt bodies still visible to this day. Miraculous is the only word that can be used. Some of the photos are not the best, but the photos like the front cover are incredible. St. Bernadette's body as it looks today on the front cover. Amazing. I would highly recommend this book for any faithful Catholic or any soul interested in the lives of the Saints and God's miracles!!

Very inspiring. Great to see so many humans end their life so close to God and pure that their bodies were not corrupted. Reading their stories Is very encouraging in helping me to follow their example, and think more about the next life and being in a place of total good and pure love. It is helping me to be that person today, and get rid of anything that is not going to be in heaven. We can't take our mental junk into the next life. (Ex. Any negative thoughts, actions, selfishness, pride, ego type stuff. OR our physical stuff. For only good can be in the presence of God.)So many great stories, so it is easy to find people you can relate to. Eternity had to fathom, but try to imagine it. This book describes the documented cases of saints whose bodies miraculously resisted decay throughout the history of the Church. While it is a very intriguing phenomenon, the reading begins to get a bit monotonous about halfway through as many of the cases are very similar and there are a ton of them.

Such an interesting study of these people. Some of it is kind of gross, as decaying bodies and stealing parts of bodies is just a bit much. But, miracles abound around those that lived such holy lives. So holy that their bodies show hardly any sign of decay for months and years after their deaths.

You Will Be Amazed."The Incorruptibles" by Joan Carroll Cruz, Tan Books and Publishers, Rockford, Illinois,On the very first page of her introduction, Joan Cruz specifies that she understands that she is treating a very special case in the preservation of the bodies of saints. First, she notes that there are three classifications of preserved bodies: (1) deliberately preserved, (2) accidentally preserved and (3) the incorruptibles. Ancient Egyptian mummies are probably the most familiar examples of deliberately preserved bodies; many of us have seen them in various museums. In her introduction, Ms. Cruz presents more details than most of us want to know about the modern techniques of embalming and its impact on the body of the deceased.(Pages 27 to 32).Accidentally preserved bodies include the more or less well known cases of bodies found in peat bogs in Denmark, Ireland and Scotland (page 32). Ms. Cruz presents the interesting case of Bremen Cathedral, Germany, where the cellar burial place tends to mummify any body left there. Experiments were run using the bodies of animals or fowls, hung in the open-windowed cellar, and the bodies of these animals became mummified.The incorruptibles, however, are those bodies which have been preserved only since Christian times and their preservation is ..."even more baffling..." since it "...seems to be neither dependent upon the manner of burial nor on the temperature or place of interment". Joan Cruz makes a case for the intervention of God as a sign of favor to His saints. The mystery is "...further compounded ... (with) ...the observance of blood and clear oils" which flow from these incorruptibles. (Page 27). Her introduction to the book is a clear and pressing statement as to why the 100+ cases she presents are different from mummifying the bodies or from accidental preservation.After her excellent introduction, Joan Cruz then presents, in chronological order, slightly more than a hundred documented cases of individuals whose bodies had been preserved from corruption after their death. In many of the cases, she provides photographs of the dead bodies, with, perhaps, the most striking and the most beautiful being that of the nun and saint, St. Bernadette Soubirous, (1844-1879), whose body has been preserved intact, "...without embalming or other artificial means", since 1879. This is a wonderful book, which will make anyone think again on his mortality, if the book is read with an open mind.

Another Birthday present for a grandson who is studying bible history, which is a historical account of a few Saints in the Catholic who had died and their bodies did not suffer corruption, unbelievable, but a true fact of history, as can be witnessed today: no other church can make the same claimto my knowledge. A strong supporting reason to believe in the true faith.

I have wanted my own copy of this book after reading about it. Very interesting.
