INTRODUCTIONWhen I first launched my dream to be a professional photographer back in the early 1970s, I began as most did at that time: by shooting with the less expensive black-and-white films. I had my own darkroom, which meant that I was also processing all of my own black-and-white film and making prints of the best shots. Six months after I exposed my first black-and-white photograph, I walked into the local camera store in Salem, Oregon, and was delighted to find seven rolls of outdated film sitting in a half-price basket on the countertop. I quickly grabbed all seven rolls, paid the salesperson around fourteen dollars, and headed out the door, gleeful at the money I had saved and in anticipation of a camping trip that weekend, when I would surely shoot all seven rolls.After my return on Monday, I was visiting my brother—the one who inspired me to get into photography in the first place—and shared the fun I'd had shooting all seven rolls. I laid them out on his kitchen counter, asking whether I needed to take any extra steps to process the outdated film. He looked at them and quickly said, “You can’t process any of these rolls because they’re not black and white. This is color slide film!” I was stunned. As far as I was concerned, a slideshow was the last thing I wanted to make. I was sure the compositions from the camping trip had been my best work yet, but now they would never be the amazing black-and-white images I had hoped to print. Seeing my crestfallen face, my brother pointed out that it was possible to have prints made from color slides—it was just expensive and time-consuming. The wait could be up to one week and I, at the young age of eighteen, had yet to master the art of patience.Days passed before my frustration subsided enough to return to the camera store with the seven rolls of Agfachrome 50 film. And several days later, I returned to pick up my slides after a long day’s work as a maintenance man for the City of Salem. What happened next was truly a defining moment in my then-young photographic career. As I placed each slide across the camera store’s light table, I was confronted with some truly remarkable color-filled compositions. The fields of wildflowers and the blue sky with white puffy clouds seemed to leap off the light table. A plate of sliced cucumbers and tomatoes (one of my meals on the camping trip) screamed with the vividness of complementary colors. It was transformative; I was awash in the tremendous power of color. Within minutes, I asked the camera-store owner if he had any more outdated film—if he did, I would take every last roll.Unfortunately, he had no more, but he did offer an attractive discount if I would buy ten rolls at once, and an even better one if I would buy twenty (called a “brick” of film). Little did I know just how many bricks I would buy over the next thirty-plus years. My love for color photography had begun.Soon after, I picked up an orange filter at the camera store and started using it to photograph sunsets and sunrises. And later, while fumbling through a cardboard box on the countertop of that same camera store, I discovered a deeply colored magenta filter and a deep blue filter. Although I never found much use for the blue filter, I had no trouble beginning my love affair with the magenta filter. It was remarkably useful when shooting during the predawn and twilight “blue hour,” when the sun is below the horizon and the sky takes on a predominantly blue hue, as well as for shooting cityscapes and landscapes.

One thing is for sure, if you have been a student of Bryan through his many workshops you can tell the book evokes his personality and wisdom. Everything you need to know about color, light and using those for effective composition is discussed and explained here. Again, he stresses how important it is to get the right image in camera; not via post processing. It's refreshing and exciting to read this book.

I found it very meaningful in understanding color photography. Color is duly explained as a compositional element in photogtaphy. The theory of color is described in a colloquial and friendly way. The meaning of color as a form of expression is dealt with. The photos are beautiful, and each of them is explained both aesthetically and technically. I own the kindle version and read it in my iPad, the resolución is very good. I enjoyed reading this book on color photography. Thanks Bryan and Susana.

I found this book barely useful. I did not need to be told that without light there would be no color. I really already understood how eyes perceive color. Too many of the examples and explanations are laden with cut phraseology; perhaps as a device to provide some length to the book. Yes, there are useful nuggets, but this could have been done. In a more useful and meaningful way.

Bryan Peterson's books are all informative, helpful, and easy to understand including this one. The book is written in a way that is easy to read and apply what you have learned. Great material and useful information.

Very basic and not punched up with great photos, kind of boring. Try something else with photos to back up the print.

Bryan Peterson's books are well-written in a light, humorous style which makes learning some relatively complex info much easier to grasp. My library now contains several of his books.

Written where each chapter highlights a different notorious woman of the Old West. Interesting read but no continuity throughout nor full development of each individual history. It feels thin as if were a book of police "rap sheets". The book piques my curiosity about several of the ladies who lead such colorful lives that I will search out more in depth books on their exploits.

I was first attracted to this book by the photos on the cover showing Poker Alice of Black Hills fame (or infamy) along with Calamity Jane who also made her mark in western history in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This book is primarily about prostitution involving women who made their living managing bordellos along with the girls who were hired to entertain the customers who frequented these establishments. It was difficult for women to support themselves in the west and choices of employment were few. Some of them were truly dedicated to doing their best to support other family members while others supported themselves as card sharks and took many unsuspecting men to the cleaners in card games. Life was very difficult for women in those days and let us not be too harsh in judging them as they did their best to live out their lives under very difficult circumstances.The book contains 190 pages of text with photographs spaced throughout the book.

It was an interesting book about the lifestyles in that era. Life was tough in the wild west. These women faced hard times and some were forced to succumb to working jobs they didn't like or want to do, whereas some of them enjoyed it very much. Gambling, prostitution, robbing banks and holding up trains and stage coaches reaped rewards - or in some cases, at least put food on the table. This is a book of short stories, each chapter featuring a different woman. Women whose names we've heard before Annie, of Annie get your gun for one. Some were good women, some were bad women, but they were all interesting in their own way.

I enjoyed Wicked Women. It 's about time we got a female perspective about the wild west. So many women were forced into prostitution back then because they had no other alternative. It's a series of short stories, which makes it handy to read in the bathroom or whenever. The stories of the various madams became a little redundant, and in some cases I wanted to know more. However, since these are true stories, I'm sure many of the women's stories disappeared into history, so we can never know how they ended up. I recommend this book.

I thought this was a fun book. Not all the facts seem to jive with other accounts, but all in all a fun read. Just be sure to read other books or accounts to make sure you are getting the whole story. Also would have liked if it had been longer. Very short book. Still good though!

Chris Enss brings wicked women, notorious, mischievous and wayward ladies from the old west to life. With a fun story telling prose that is fun to read Chris makes it clear these women needed all of these skills and more to survive their betrayal by the scoundrels they loved. These women were often beautiful, brilliant and fearless. Others were mean and cantankerous but all of them were interesting, mostly because Chris brings them to life. Life was tough and the laws were against them but these lively women overcame all of the odds even if they often died in misery and debt because of the men who failed them. This is a wonderful read and I can't wait to read more of Chris Enss's books.

Excellent stories from the lives of wild women of the West. Chris Enss writes an entertaining account of the lives of these adventurous women. Many were orphaned, widowed, or abused and needed a way to make a living. Some were in the businesses of prostitution, gambling, cattle rustling, bar, boarding house or brothel owners.Most of them made and lost fortunes. A few made it to old age with their fortunes. Prohibition and the transition of wild western towns to law abiding communities closed many of these businesses down.This was a fascinating book about the lives of women who survived the days of the old west as prostitutes, cardsharps, madams, or robbers.

Another fun book from Chris Enss. While some people have criticized the brevity of information on each character...I find that I have found some fascinating tidbits of ladies that I wouldn't have otherwise heard of...if I want a more indepth study on a particular woman, I will read a stand alone biography. This is perfect for introductions to interesting women of the west!

Chris and J are so endearing, that I just wanted to hug the stuffing out of them. I like the way they support each other emotionally and physically. Their interactions and banter are rich with humor and snark. I'm not sure whom I dislike more- Tina and S/O or Fran. Tina and S/O are just ignorant, uninformed, idiots. Who hides in their house from their own child???Really!! Fran has no sense of decency or boundaries. She seems to be using the boys' relationship for her own private peep show and takes advantage non stop. Friends don't do that! User- loser! Sociopathic behavior.I liked seeing how the boys were adjusting and handling new experiences in this phase of their lives. Lots of personal growth, maturity, and integrity. Love them and look forward to more.

It is everything that I look for in a fiction novel, but do not often find. Christopher and Jeremy are refreshingly imperfect but lovable. The character development in this installment is everything that I hoped for, after falling in love with the start of their story. The author also added depth to other supporting characters, such as Bessie, Dennis, Frances and Clifton. This two-book series is unapologetic, sexy, honest, funny, well-paced and (mostly)relatable. I hope to read more from this author and/or series in the future.

I was so excited when I checked and saw this book had come out. I immediately put down the book I was reading so I could start this one. It did not disappoint! Everything I loved about Chris and Jeremy in the first book I love just as much in this one. They have grown into their own and in their relati onship, they just make me smile. I've lost count how many times I've read Crossing Swords, I know I'll be reading Sword Fight again. I'm hoping, fingers crossed, this won't be the last time we see Chris and J.

I really can't say enough good things about this author.J and Chris have turned into two of my favorite "not quite gay" characters. I have belly laughed, snorted, rolled my eyes and felt my heart pinch throughout this book ... Which by the way is just as ridiculously perfect as the first Crossing Swords.The flawless writing and tight editing is cream on the top of this banana split.

Yay! I've been waiting for this book for a long time, and it exceeded my expectations. There is a freshness and realness to the dialogue that is not found in many other mm books, and the journey of the main characters is poignant and rings true. All in all, a highly recommended read. Plus, it's hot! What more could you want? Oh, and there's humor, too! So much better than the run-of-the-mill mm romance. Kudos to the author!

I cannot believe Mixie Edward’s doesn’t write more books (under this pen name). She draws you in to the characters so well. I feel like I know Christopher and Jeremy and I’m so happy to share their journey. The right combination of angst, lust, humor and love.
