About the Author

Barbara Roth is a UCLA-educated painter and an art instructor with a teaching credential in art education and adult education. She teaches watercolor, gouache, and mixed-media painting classes from her home studio near San Diego, Calif., and throughout the country. Hugely helpful! I have always struggled with watercolors and been disappointed in how they turn out. This book has been great - I just got it yesterday, sat up late poring over it last night and today....today my watercolor technique has literally taken a huge leap forward. I am so tickled with myself!I love Barbara's straight forward, no-nonsense style. Her step-by-step guidance (with pictures!) on what to do first and what to leave until last is HUGELY helpful. She not only shows you where she shadows but she tells you what colors she used and what she went back over several times. That was huge for me. I love that she also has "fixing mistakes".....other books sort of ignore the entire issue. She not only tells you how to correct or disguise them when they happen but she has the humility to SHOW you her own pictures where she did just that. Not every artist would be so forthcoming.I only wish you had shown us a wee picture of your homemade paint boxes made out of mint tins, Barbara! I would love to have seen them. I really appreciated your thrifty, you-don't-have-to-run-out-and-buy-the-most-expensive-things attitude. It was so refreshing to find someone who makes do with what she has.I really loved this book and am looking forward to working through all of the exercises in it. Really....I was just stunned at how much better my painting was this morning after just one nights read! Wish I'd gotten this years ago...

I'm new to art -- this is a friendly, helpful, and encouraging way to learn how to use watercolors "on the go" -- a step-by-step approach that makes you feel as if the instructor is looking over your shoulder offering encouragement.A great guide for beginners - and others thinking about trying out watercolors.And oh -- the paintings (examples) are beautiful.

I was looking forward to seeing Barbara's book, and it is wonderful! I bought it for a friend who loves to journal with watercolor, and she is really enjoying the "how to" pages in the book, from start to finish, how to create beautiful watercolor scenes in a journal. Barbara is a great teacher, and that shows in her precise, yet fun, instructions in this book. Beautifully done!

This book gives the beginning painter clear, direct instructions for painting on the go. It covers all the bases from putting together a travel kit to using value sketches. I ordered this book because I travel a lot and want to improve my woefully clumsey on-the-go painting skills. I am glad I bought it. Now it is up to me to read and heed. As an aside, the illustrations are a delight. It is worth buying the book just to see them.

Barbara is a terrific teacher. If you've ever told yourself you can't paint, you are wrong and this book will teach you how to do it anywhere! So much fun!

This is a wonderful book for a watercolor beginner like myself. Barbara goes through all the essentials in a "non-threatening" way. She knows how to make the art approachable to anyone. Her whimsical artistic style makes this book fun to follow. I highly recommend this book to any watercolor beginners, hobbyists, and urban sketchers!

I read reviews that said this was for advanced intermediate or early Advanced the arrangements are so simple lacking depth and fullness I want to return the book.... A major disappointment. Martha Mier are more difficult to play. Looking for true cocktail piano with richness and complexity. ..this is not it.The left hand on many of the arrangements consists of one base note.... yawn. Over use of low base notes as well.

I have three other books in the series, which I enjoy a lot, but I would give this one the highest rating for several reasons. First, it has a good variety of songs and arrangement styles, ranging from upbeat to mellow, and from slow swing to fast swing. Second, the arrangements sound great for the most part so that I enjoy playing nearly all of the songs in the book regularly. The one exception for me is the Lady is a Tramp. I just don't care for the sound of that arrangement. Third, the songs are very recognizable to others. When I play in public for older crowds, this is definitely the book of choice because it has more songs they easily recognize and can sing along to if they know the words. Unfortunately, the words are not in the books, but that makes sense because the arrangements were not written as strict vocal accompaniments. Like the other books in the series I've bought, there are plenty of rich chords, creative approaches, and fun solo improvisation breaks written in. I imagine there are more sophisticated arrangements out there somewhere, but these are a great start for an upper immediate-level pianist like myself who is learning about these songs and styles for the first time.

Harmonically and rhythmically sophisticated arrangements up to the moderately advanced level with just enough filigree to be satisfying but not cloying. There are a few fingering challenges and some daring progressions to keep your mind busy. Editing is solid with logical note spellings (a problem in some other keyboard-generated books), but a couple of pieces have orphaned repeat signs at the head with no match later on. My other minor beef is the use of repeats — if you're going to write out jazz, then write it all out.

Good varied selection of Cocktail Tunes well, diversely, and playable arranged by BE. Bring a Manhattan with you to sip on at the piano. This will get you in the right vibe as you explore these gems.

Some really good arrangements...and good bass parts if you want to add another instrument.Jazz music is always difficult even if you are an accomplished pianist like me.I can tell the arranger is someone with larger hands than I have since some songs have some pretty large chords to reach.

I'm a mediocre, self-taught pianist. I think that part of the reason I'm mediocre is that I don't commit to a piece-- I sample. In the few weeks since I've had this book I have 2 songs down to the point that I can entertain. The songs are intermediate level, but are really nice arrangements. Hard enough that I really have to concentrate and be disciplined in my practicing. But attainable.

I purchased the Kindle edition and am giving this 3 stars because the arrangements are very good, but the Kindle version is not satisfactory. For some inexplicable reason the second page of each piece does not contain music but text that documents publication dates and copyright. This means that as you are finishing the first page and turning to the next, your playing is interrupted longer than necessary to switch to the third page. Secondly, the music does not fill the entire page, only a portion.

This book is just what it suggests...piano solos in a "cocktail piano" style. It definitely gets the job done and have received many compliments on the performed pieces.

I sense that this book opens a new era in writing and thinking about Finance.New Knowledge requires new language. After a superbly written first essay, the reader begins to encounter more technically dense and, yes, less fluent writing from authorities who don’t usually address the public. But rather than ask them to write better, I encourage readers to work harder at reading better. Robert Meister’s chapter on Liquidity put me off for a few paragraphs until I came to his question, “What is the role of debt and credit instruments as a [ground for] political resistance?” How can Finance help secure justice, in other words? As a result of that sentence I reread his essay three times, with growing understanding and excitement. All of the chapters are equally engaging—for example, one of them considers the nature of “the gift” and the dynamic of reciprocity implicit in gift-giving. Why not apply that same human expectation to those who benefit from the creation of value from financial speculation using derivatives?This book necessarily is a first step, though a brilliant one. What happens when the rest of us get to know what these scholars know? How do we talk about it in terms we all understand? I challenge these superb thinkers to continue to help us do that, and I urge every serious citizen to begin by reading this book.

Depending on what I'm cooking, have been using this book as a reference guide. This time I was grilling a pork dish. Alas, the page with the pork rub was machine cut from the book. After failing to find the required page, sure enough there were other pages missing too. Not to disrespect Paul Kirk; but, I really don't want this book anymore. With regards to the pages that I do have, the book is strictly for reference only. It is difficult to really get ideas from just flipping through the pages. Best to know what you are going to cook and then just glance through this to see about kicking it up a notch.

This book could pass as an old classic or as a new one. You can sense that this book was not made by a chef gathering recipes and making a book out of it. There is great wisdome in Paul's recipes and the ones he borrows are also solid. Very, very few bbq books are as good in recipes as Kirk's. Probably none.

This glorious paperback is a once-in-a-decade event in the world of cookbooks: somone who genuinely understands his subject clearly and succinctly explains it in a way that is easy for anyone to understand, even complete novices.Several times, the author uses the term "master class". This term is usually reserved when an acknowledged master of the subject decides to transfer his skills and abilities to others via a special class. At first, I thought that the use of this term was a little overblown. How wrong I was.He goes through these subjects: ingredients, rubs, marinades, mops, sauces, and other (salsa, relish, ketchup). Each subject is expertly covered, and tells you everything you need to know. He explains the principle and structure of each one, and then gives instructions on how to create it for yourself. Recipes are then presented for those who do not wish to do the experiments on their own. My only complaint is the table of contents: more detail would be a great help.This book is the only one you really need when it comes to barcecue sauces. If you don't already have it, I suggest you get it and throw away the other barbecue books you have.

I recently got this book, haven't finished reading it yet but I've already learned a lot. He has some really great information and pointers, and a lot of knowledge on the ingredients and how they should be used. The thing that I really like is that he teaches you how to develop your own rubs, marinades and sauces along with providing many recipes. Rubs for example he shows a chart of ingredients for several different rubs so you can see the common ingredients and what makes them different.The book is written with a real culinary backbone,which isn't surprising considering he teaches classes on BBQ, This would be the book that would accompany that class. he uses many definitions right from the dictionary. The recipes are easy to read, follow, and are very clear. Some recipes may be a little advanced for people new to this, but overall are not difficult. Today I smoked some chicken wings and used a baste in the book and a BBQ sauce. Both were easy to make and I already had almost all the ingredients in the kitchen, AND they turned out GREAT!The only section that has techniques for smoking is the introduction, so if that's what you're looking for I wouldn't recommend this book, for that I recommend "backyard BBQ" by Richard W. McPeake. Backyard BBQ: The Art of Smokology He goes into great detail on preparing meat, smoking/brining times,and temperatures. That's the book I turn to for that information, and also has some great recipes. "championship BBQ Sauces" is great for all the things you need to kick up your BBQ. Really great marinades/bastes, rubs, sauces, mustards, relishes, salsas, flavored oils and vinegars. There's also a helpful section for measurement conversions, and a quantity guide to tell you how much rub, marinade, or sauce you need for given amounts of meat.To sum it up, this book is a MUST HAVE if you are into BBQ. Like I said there are other books that teach technique, this gives you everything you need for recipes and gives you all the tools you need to develop your own great recipes. I've been looking for this book for a long time and have finally found it!

Paul Kirk is the "Baron of BBQ" and if you study this book you will follow his footsteps and develop your own BBQ winning rubs and sauces and more. Study, not just read this book is my suggestion, its a training manual but a good read also, and it will never be outdated. A primer for serious barbecue.This is my third copy of his book because i wore out the others.This book can be priceless if you want to bring your bbq skills to a competition level.

I did enjoy this book it gives some good pointers for how to develop a rub or sauce, It had some great recipes as well, the couple I tried were good, I do not think it brought anything new to the table that I have not read in other books or online. For someone who has been smoking/ grilling awhile I do not know that it offers anything new or different. But with that in mind for someone starting to get into smoking or grilling it offers some good ideas for balancing flavor profiles, as well as creating your own signature rubs or sauces

I purchased this book on recommendations from others on this site and do not regret it at all! I have made several sauces and rubs and they are outstanding! I also had to go and purchase many of the ingredients that I did not have which took a while and at 5 different stores. I went through the book and made a list and after spending over 100.00 I had a complete collection of items I never had or heard of! This is my first book I have ever purchased for BBQ and I do not regret it. I have had compliments that I never had before and I am finally enjoying BBQing!
