Easier to read than the previous edition with updates. Vignettes and activities at the end of the chapter are nice for discussion and review. Appreciate case law and points in boxes throughout the book as well. Good reference regarding law in practice for school psychologists.

Don't go to court without this

Updated and comprehensive. Covers what is needed in today's school psychology settings. Great source to keep on hand in the office for those ethical and legal problem-solving dilemmas.

This is a solid textbook that utilizes tools that work for me. There are specific scenes/exercises to work through that will help with integrating the knowledge from each chapter. It will be useful to anyone working with children--not just school psychologists.You will get definitions on terms so if you are already in the field, some of this may seem too basic. But it's never a bad thing to review the fundamentals. This is meant for all states so you won't find things that address your state should you need that.The best part for my husband (who is in this field) was the case studies. He felt it helped him see the information in real-life use.

I chose this book to read the chapter about ethical and legal issues of research in schools but found the entire book to be a well written and comprehensive resource. There is a substantial reference section as well as a Table of Cases. An overall great resource. My only request is that the chapter cases be either factious or from actual litigation. I was not a fan of mixing the cases. Otherwise, a solid resource for students and professionals.

I am approaching this book from the viewpoint of a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who has studied law and ethics for the state in which I am licensed already, but have not had specific training in ethics and law as they apply to school psychologist in particular. I was interested in this book mainly because I work with children and coordinate with professionals at schools. I wanted this book to fill in any gaps I may have in understanding laws in regards to working with schools. This book does a very good job of providing an overview of specific concerns and laws rather than more general concerns (which I have already learned). Some of the information overlaps with what most therapists/psychologists have already studied (e.g., Tarasoff, HIPAA), but more than enough of it is specific to dealing with school situations to make it worthwhile reading for those who aren't exclusively working in a school, but are working for children. I particularly appreciated those areas which appeared to be different when working in a school setting (e.g., differences in informed consent as compared to a more conventional therapeutic setting).This is a textbook, and they do start at square one defining terms and include comprehension questions at the end, so it's good for beginners and students as well as professionals who want to expand their knowledge into specific legal and ethical concerns for working in/with schools. It isn't going to help anyone pass the law and ethics tests for qualifying for licensure, however, as it is generalized for all of America and doesn't include state-specific information. I don't see this as a demerit of the book as it isn't promoted as being a licensure study aid. I'm just mentioning it FYI. I really liked the case studies that were included as they were a way of relating real world situations to the information that was included.In terms of weaknesses, I really didn't note any significant ones, though patient automony is over-referenced a lot. That being said, that is the case in all materials pertaining to law and ethics as it is a critical ethical consideration in treatment. In terms of strength, I think it is well-organized, beautifully referenced, and easy to read and follow. For professionals who plan to work with schools in any capacity, this is a solid textbook or primer.

For me, this is part of the evolutionary approach to gaining skill in a craft that ranges between utility and art and sometimes straddles both.

I have seen and heard David speak about photography online, on and off for a few years. I am impressed by his calm and collected approach and attitude toward the subject of creating (photographic) art. He approaches the subject from many angles, never proclaiming one idea, method, position to be superior or right compared to others. This is the sign of a mature mind ( and I didn't mean that in the derogatory sense ). So, this is my first purchase of any of his items, and I will say, I am impressed.He writes with both knowledge and passion and there is a lot to read, and just enough to look at. Each chapter is thought provoking if you let it be. Now that I have spent a few years mastering the craft of photography, it is clear to me that what is missing most of the time is my soul. This is a passion that is not to be entered into without a willingness to devote some time to thinking about what you want to portray, and put some energy into the elements necessary to create story, an image with a soul.Finally, on the book itself. David speaks eloquently about the images with his words, but there are in fact two other senses that only a printed book can deliver upon, and the Soul of the Camera delivers on those other senses very nicely. No iPad, no Kindle, no Instagram, 500px or whatever can deliver the two other sensory inputs the way a printed book can. First is touch. The feel of the paper, the weight, the smoothness and the texture of the ink upon the paper. Next is smell. A new printed book smells of the ink and the toil of the lithographer. This book smells and feels just as good as it looks and provides equal parts sensory input and cerebral stimulation.If you care about photography and the art of delivering a work of art to your ______ ( client, friend, family, wife, daughter, son, ... ) then you owe it to them to read this book, and to yourself to touch and smell it!

I felt like I was attending a motivational session, but that was OK. I liked the exposure of the chronological past of critical thinking, starting with the Socratic method. The contribution of Descartes in Rules for the Direction of the Mind was accredited, which advises us to grab on to the scientific method before accepting blindly what is thrown at us. At the same time, the author reminds the reader that reasoning and critical thinking are two processes -- the latter enhancing the former -- according to Immanuel Kant. Perhaps the most important message may be never to take anything at face value... question and investigate first. I would like to add that successful critical thinking requires a high level of emotional intelligence. BTW, this book may not be comfortable for the average reader... For it to be complete as a scientific product it requires a formal bibliography at the end.

So this book has indeed given me proven steps on how I can become a critical thinker. Very wise strategies that you can apply on a daily basis. You will also learn on how you can cultivate your skills to whatever goals or whatever difficulties you might have and it will be an advantage if you know how to make use of your critical thinking. I believe this book has helped me in many directions, one of them making wiser decisions. Very informative and would highly recommend to friends.

It helped me understand how to become a critical thinker by first explaining what it really is. The book is more understandable that the short courses I have taken.

Sometimes we miss on judging skillfully that we end up making bad decisions which make our situation worse than better. Whenever we get involved in a situation no matter how simple it is, I believe critical thinking would really be a big help.Being rational is important as discussed in this book. This book does a good job in explaining the history and methodology of critical thinking and why we need to be crtitical thinkers in today's world. From this book, I learned useful tips on thinking critically, such as asking proactive questions, acting as my own critic, being rational... A critical read for everybody!

It is very basic but good structured

To me this is the truest test of intelligence. Anyone can memorize facts or procedures to repetitive tasks and so forth.But it takes a truly wise person to think outside the box and be able to think critically in stressful situations or any situation that the ability to think clearly and wisely can be a huge advantage. The plus side is this can be learned and this book has simple straight forward steps to this process and I must admit I am seeing an improvement on my ability to think clearly through the noise. In this book, George Musser has made an attempt to introduce the concept of string theory to the masses; however, I don't think this "idiot's guide" really accomplishes that goal. Musser covers a wide range of topics in twenty-three bite size chapters of about ten to twelve pages each. I have found in chapter after chapter that the discussion is too superficial to really grasp the concepts discussed. If you think of the vast knowledge of this subject matter as being a large pond, this book will simply give you bits and pieces of information like a rock skimming across the surface of the pond. If you had no prior knowledge of the subject matter, I just think you would walk away with not much more that a smattering of facts and information, but no real depth of understanding. Of course, to be fair, this is a difficult subject to "translate" into the common vernacular so to speak, but I know some justice can be done to this feat. I know because I have read the books written by Brian Greene on the subject. For example, Green's book "The Elegant Universe" did a splendid job of presenting the concepts of string theory and the cosmos in a manner that allowed comprehension by the non-expert.Nevertheless, in his book, Musser touches on many subjects, such as relativity, quantum theory and the world of the small, the Standard Model, black holes, the big bang, time travel, gravitons, strings, loop quantum gravity, extra dimensions, parallel universes, symmetry, branes, testing string theory, and more. New terms introduced are defined in sidebars as are explanations of key ideas and concepts albeit tersely.If you can be content by a collection of "fast facts" on this subject matter, you will probably find this book satisfying.

I confess I'm still slogging through the first half. So much new Information. A very good feature, is how this writer refers you to other parts of the book both material already covered and material in later chapters. I really appreciate the short glossary in Appendix A which I usually ignored in the past. Also some good follow up info in Appendix B. Especially the information about Cosmology. This author also maintains a web site for errata plus some more resource links. When I finish George Musser's book I think I'll be prepared enough to tackle Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe" next. Maybe even dig out my old Hawkings book that I never finished.

The problem is I am not only a complete idiot but an under educated one too. I took math and physics at school and did OK but that was years ago. Never the less I am persevering because it is a fascinating subject and the book is well written.

I am always skeptical of physics for laypeople that avoids all the math. The math of string theory, however, is for experts only. Musser does a great job of explaining the lay of the land. He does not only string theory, but all the background needed to make sense of string theory. I do think string theory is seriously overhyped. It makes no testable predictions (as of yet).

Mostly the explanations are reasonably well written. However, it's not true for all the explanations given in the book, at least not for me. That is, when I have to re-read some explanation three times and still feeling unsure of the answer given in the book, I just have to move on.

Book Review (Amazon) Complete Idiot's Guide to String TheoryThis is a beautiful book, not only in its clarity but in its proper understanding that quanta are primary over particles.Yet it still tries to sell you on the idea that strings are physical, just as 19th century science tried to sell us on the concept that mind is physical. But, to get back to the controlling metaphor, IMHO just as we have minds, and our minds are primary (controlling) over our bodies, particles are controlled by quanta. Scientists so far have mixed the metaphor and have not been able to understand that quanta control particles, condemning strings to the physical world of the particle. So like Ponce de Leon, and his search for the fanciful fountain of youth, it seeks some fanciful solution to the "extra dimensions" necessary to explain particle activity in physical, rather than naturally in mental space. But in fact the "extra" dimensions are not hidden or curled up in physical dimensions, the extra dimensions, like all quanta, are mental and the extra, controlling dimensions are mental as well.-Ever since Hume, science has imprisoned us in the dark cave of materialism and blind empiricism and needs to restore us to the rational sunlight of plato (plotinus) -- see my website (...)or search in Google with a search term such as Clough platonic theory of mind Site: (...)

Use of the word Idiot is just an attention-grabber of course. The author leads you with minimum difficulty to a satisfying basic knowledge of strings, if you are a pretty intelligent and educated person. If the theory can be verified by experiment, our knowledge of how the world works will be greatly advanced.'

Crazy read. I did not know that String Theory was thought up from some 8 year old kid back in ancient Ireland.
