I am a 6th generation, white, organic dairy farmer living and farming in Vermont, the 2nd whitest state in the US. I literally, in part due to my work and seldom venturing more than a mile from my house and the state in which I live, don’t encounter black people. And as Penniman describes, this experience is no different when I do venture forth to agricultural events. I have however been trying to work through the conflicting, uncomfortable, and deeply important work of confronting my white privilege and all that means, and particularly, what that means as a regenerative, organic farmer.I was heartbroken reading this book. I think every farmer practicing any agriculture that can be described as sustainable, organic, regenerative, eco-friendly, name your term here , MUST read this book. For as important and bolstering and healing and NECESSARY a book like this must be for a black farmer, it also Provides a very clear road map for white farmers and understanding the reality of the system in which they operate.I was ashamed and uncomfortable, heartbroken and angry and embarrassed to learn the truth of how the type of agriculture to which I ascribe everything came to be. That NOWHERE in anything I ever come across was organic and regenerative agriculture attributed correctly to African (and Indigenous) traditions. I was even more ashamed that I had never thought to dig around and figure it out for myself. I am not entirely certain of how exactly we as white organic farmers move forward, but I can assure you that buying this book, reading it and sharing it widely is the LEAST you can do and a very easy place to start.As white sustainable farmers we need to be lifting up both the work and voices like Penniman’s to ensure that the narrative moving forward tells the truth of how these imperative agricultural practices came to used by white folks like us. We need to recognize our IMMENSE white privilege in having land at all to farm, in having the choice to farm and that, in making that choice we do not have to confront thousands of years of embodied trauma to do so. That as difficult and tricky and backbreaking as farming is as a white person that to do so while black involves all that and so much more. We need to open our minds and our hearts and welcome back to the land the very people to whom we can attribute her loving care. Only then, in coming back to these ancient methods of agriculture while following in the footsteps of black farmers, listening and uplifting their voices and their rightful place on land can we all move forward together to heal the Earth.
I love the content of Farming While Black. This is a very detailed and informative book. It has instructions for beginners as well as seasoned gardeners. It also has colorful pictures. I am very happy that I have this information at my fingertips.
I heard the author on a public radio segment and had to read this. She is exciting to listen to, and the information and the messages in the book are uniquely insightful; complex dynamics are deftly synthesized; and are downright inspirational. I don't even farm and was so engrossed. This book, this work is a unique aspect of not only cultural history but to an even more hopeful brilliant cultural future.

We have a lot of farming books, and this one just moved to the top of the pile. Not only does it take seriously farming-as-activism, but also it offers serious instruction about a wide array of topics. Just, wow! Inspiring, instructive, engaging, well written, wish I could give it six stars.
