The Wisdom of Insecurity: A Message for an Age of Anxiety

Review

“Reading Alan Watts challenges us to explore new avenues of thinking, inspires us to lead more fulfilling lives. His legacy lives on in The Wisdom of Insecurity, a work that energetically displays Watts’s piercing intellect, razor-sharp wit, and winning grace. For the clarity and wisdom with which it engages timeless concerns crucial to us all, it is unmatched. An important book.”—Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea“Perhaps the foremost interpreter of Eastern disciplines for the contemporary West, Watts had the rare gift of ‘writing beautifully the unwritable.’”—Los Angeles Times“The wisdom of insecurity is not a way of evasion, but of carrying on wherever we happen to be stationed—carrying on, however, without imagining that the burden of the world, or even of the next moment, is ours. It is a philosophy not of nihilism but of the reality of the present—always remembering that to be of the present is to be, and candidly know ourselves to be, on the crest of a breaking wave.”—Philip Wheelwright, Arts and Letters “This book proposes a complete reversal of all ordinary thinking about the present state of man. The critical condition of the world compels us to face this problem: how is man to live in a world in which he can never be secure, deprived, as many are, of the consolations of religious belief? The author shows that this problem contains its own solution—that the highest happiness, the supreme spiritual insight and certitude are found only in our awareness that impermanence and insecurity are inescapable and inseparable from life. Written in a simple and lucid style, it is a timely message.”—Book Exchange (London)

About the Author

Alan W. Watts, who held both a master’s degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best remembered as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and of Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. Standing apart, however, from sectarian membership, he has earned the reputation of being one of the most original and “unrutted” philosophers of the twentieth century. Watts was the author of some twenty books on the philosophy and psychology of religion that have been published in many languages throughout the world, including the bestselling The Way of Zen. An avid lecturer, Watts appeared regularly on the radio and hosted the popular television series, Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life, in the 1960s. He died in 1973.

To sum this book up: Anxiety happens, it's unavoidable, there's nothing you can do about it - except realize there's nothing you can do about it so just relax and don't worry about it.

I know that had Alan Watts been live, and had he seen the title of this review, he would have possible stomped his foot on the ground or even slapped me into my senses while saying: "BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT."And I understand why he would say that. I understood (albeit not perfectly) the message that he is trying to pass on. Watts is the most Eastern Westerner I know. His philosophies, particularly in this book, can lead into a metaphysical web that could leave you stuck indefinitely. At this same time, if you peel back the philosophical layers, which he helps you do at times, you will notice that the message, at its core, is always simple. He is begging the reader not to eliminate the ego, but to come to a full realization, a hyper awareness of sorts, that there is NO ego - that the ego, or the "I," is simply a figment of imagination. There is no method to achieve this hyper-awareness, no guide, no set of instructions, but only this imperative: "Look!"I may be just a tad bit too simplistic to fully grasp the significance of this, but I believe that at times I caught a glimpse of the implications of Watt's message. To live perfectly in the moment, to understand that the experience and the "experiencer" are one in the same just as a wave is not part of the ocean, but is the ocean, all of it - I can begin to fathom how one would be able to shed so much pretense and predispositions. Or not, I don't know.My personal opinion is that there are gems in this book, but as it is with all things, anything in excess is harmful. This book sells Eastern thought in its entirety, and I believe that no, Alan Watt's does not have the answer to the meaning of life (which he would probably agree to me saying) and I don't think you'll find in this book all the answers to your questions. It is a refreshing read though, at least it was for me. I really had to break down my mind, my prejudices, my perceptions and realize that my reality is truly the product of my own mind - and that I can change that, if I want to.In any case, a worthy read, but definitely not a book if you're looking for "10 Ways to Reduce Anxiety." It is rather an exhortation to awareness.

This is a delightfully fresh and direct book from Watts. I have been reading him on and off for the past 35+ years and this seems to me to be something of a breakthrough for/from him, really expressing a very clear experience of being in the moment. It is easy to read (large print, simple words), but the meaning is deep and profound, and he says it all in a way that is both clearly simple and yet playfully fresh. And he does this without a lot of cultural baggage (East or West), so making it especially powerful and approachable for modern readers (yet also remarkable in that he wrote this in 1951).Over and over he points out what is real (what we all know), and yet indescribable;"What is true and positive is too real and too living to be described, and to try to describe it is like putting red paint on a red rose." (p.76)"Indeed, every experience is in this sense new, and at every moment in our lives we are in the midst of the new and unknown. At this point you receive the experience without resisting it or naming it, and the whole sense of conflict between "I" and the present reality vanishes." (p.94)"The meaning of freedom can never be grasped by the divided mind. If I feel separate from my experience, and from the world, freedom will seem to be the extent to which I can push the world around, and fate the extent to which the world pushes me around. But to the whole mind there is no contrast of "I" and the world. There is just one process acting, and it does everything that happens.... No one fates and no one is being fated." (p. 122)And the way he finishes the book is perhaps best of all;"Discovering this the mind becomes whole; the split between I and me, man and the world, the ideal and the real, comes to an end. Paranoia, the mind beside itself, becomes metanoia, the mind with itself and so free from itself. Free from clutching at themselves the hands can handle; free from looking at themselves the eyes can see; free from trying to understand itself thought can think. In such feeling, seeing, and thinking life requires no future to complete itself nor explanation to justify itself. In this moment it is finished." (p. 152)And he could just as easily have said, in this moment it begins.

Maybe the single best Alan Watts book. If you get this book, and really get "It", and you will know if you really got "It", your search for "It" will be finished. For you will have realized that you are "It". Always have been, always will be.

I particularly love Watts when he was still a deeply thinking Christian. But all his books are great, especially for those of us who are interested in the real life of the spirit, but don't want to 'be' a Buddhist, a Christian or join anything.

Alan Watts writes a wonderful view of life. Touching on the understandings of Christianity and Zen Buddhism and how they approach the understanding of human life. Of particular interest to me was the philosophy of I and Me. Thinking about thinking is so fun too..... A book that is wonderful to understand nature and appreciate adventure in life inspirational. Dance like no one is watching and enjoy this book a wonderful read dont think too hard on it and its a fun insighful beautiful book some real key thoughts on leading a beautiful life.

Not sure how one can give a bad review to a book. If you did not like a book, it just means YOU did not like a book, it doesn't mean a book is bad. So... I did not like this book, because I just do not like and do not agree with ideas that author expressed in this book. It was neither inspirational, not educational for me. That, unfortunately, was the worst book I read last year. I saw no benefits in reading it. But... I know people who would love it, therefore, it was unregretfully gifted to a co-workers. Although book is not expensive, you may want to read some extracts from it, if you can find, before purchasing

I love vampire romances, and I think the Black Dagger Brotherhood is one of the best vampire romance series around. This book wasn't one of my favorites. Book 2, the original Rhage & Mary story, wasn't a favorite either. I love Rhage, and I love the beast. He's handsome and strong and sweet and loyal. But I don't find Mary very compelling. She's just too bland for me. When she was originally introduced into the series, she was plain and directionless and too mild-mannered for me. And she hasn't changed much over the years. This book felt like one long social commentary on the joys of adoption, which I'm in favor of but isn't particularly romantic. I liked the side-story about Jo because it reminds me a bit of Beth's story, so I'm looking forward to Jo's book. I found the side story about Assail more appealing than in earlier books. This book barely held my interest. I hope for better next time.

SPOILERS INCLUDEDI rarely write reviews though I'm an avid reader. I've been with the BDB since the beginning and have enjoyed many re-reads. The reason for the rating for this book is due to the secondary stories. They were far more interesting. As much as I enjoy the BDB series, I do not enjoy, what I call, repeat books. I don't like waiting a year for a book about a couple that already has a book. This story could have EASILY been a secondary story, for example to Lassiter's book.THE BEASTSo, aside from being annoyed that rhage and mary got ANOTHER book, the story seemed forced to me. Rhage is suffering from these bizarre panic attacks that ultimately have created distance between him and Mary. Mary is trying to get through to a recently orphaned girl at Safe Place and is frustrated that she's not really making any progress. They eventually talk and air their personal struggles and realize they want a kid. Surprise! The kid they want is the orphan. That's what THE BEAST is about. Smh. The story just dragged to me. It did not take me long to KNOW what the end was going to be. Yeah, they get the kid and now they have a family. With the title being THE BEAST, you'd think beastie would make more than TWO physical appearances. I don't know, maybe it's me expecting too much from Ward, but this story felt like she was trying to create an unnecessary story for a favorite character. (Not mine but I think I'm in the minority)The side stories....I originally was not a fan of layla and xcor's story. In preparation for THE BEAST, I did a re-read and was captivated by their tragic, forbidden love. It reeked of untapped passion. I'm thoroughly excited that their story is next in THE CHOSEN. I'm glad her and her young survived what felt like a 2-3 year pregnancy.Again, I originally did not like Assail and Marisol's story, but found myself looking forward to reading more. Although sola isn't really present in this book, Assail's part in this book was highly entertaining. I'm totally rooting on him to "get" Throe. Throe's confusion about his attraction to him was surprisingly erotic. I hope that after Assail detoxes we see Sola back in his life. The "human" Jo was only interesting because she's the unknown sister of Manny. I'm sure the warden will somehow incorporate her into the BDB's world since Vishous (who is my #1 favorite) got a vibe from her. I don't know who her love interest will be, maybe one of the BASTARDS.So the Scribe Virgin is "dead" and will appoint a successor at a later date. Why is she gone? How will she appoint a replacement? This was confusing to me. Especially since the Omega is definitely NOT gone. I thought they were all about balance. I'm sure Ward will give an explanation of sorts but for now me and the BDB were left scratching our heads. In conclusion, this is the 1st book in the series I don't see me re-reading multiple times. It was forgettable and I don't think it deserved 508 pages. It wasn't horribly written be any means, it just felt unnecessary. I can understand from an author's POV that they have to create stories to keep their fans engaged, but that's what introducing new characters are for. Or at least give EVERY character a book (seriously can my boy LASSITER please get a d*mn book already) before revisiting old favorites. My apologies for the all over the place review and for any grammar or spelling errors. I didn't want to give ALL the spoilers away but I did want to touch on what I enjoyed. This book did NOT turn me away from the series but I could have lived without it.

JR Ward deserves 6 stars for this one. WOW WOW WOW.I think the best thing about this one was how tight she kept the storytelling--we weren't bombarded with 20 pov's and the ones we saw were richly developed. And so it was so much easier to connect with Assail, to feel Rhage and Mary's desire to adopt Bitty growing with every tuned page, to feel the sad, star-crossed connection between Layla and Xcor even if they never spoke.Rhage/Mary-JR Ward hit the perfect note with Rhage in terms of the jokester, the Beast, the guy who is devoted to his Mary, and now the man who is ready to be a father. Like some of the other Brothers, I didn't think their "book" really made me fall in love with the characters as much as other moments in the series did. This second focus on them really changed that.Vishous-It seems like Vishous is always one of Ward's favorites, whereas others (Phury particularly, but also Rehvenge, Tohr) never get the spotlight or even show up with more than a mention. Hopefully that eventually evens out more, much as I like Vishous. Anyway, here he's super both in his mommy issues with the Scribe Virgin, his stiffness with Jane, and in the awesome scenes with Assail in particular.Assail-Huge secondary story arc that was masterfully pulled off by Ward. His slow turn around from moral-less drug lord to tortured soul to the moment he finds the blood slave and the true fiber of his character is revealed was exquisitely done. The phone call to Sola, his decision to get help and the way the book ends have me very much hoping Assail/Sola will be the couple featured in the next book. I LOVE the idea of Assail having to tell Sola he's a vampire and how all of that will fall out, since at this point, she still doesn't know.Layla/Xcor-On the one hand, I'm thrilled with the fact that both twins lived (and love the names.) There's just this teensy niggling frustration that why does Payne pull out the magical healing abilities *sometimes* for a premature baby, but Selena was allowed to die? Why does she save the babies twice, in fact? It just seems a little too convenient. I really would have wished they just take that part out and have Payne's intervention not be needed, rather than have what seems like big plot loopholes. Loved the connection she has with Xcor the entire time. Itching for how the brotherhood will find out she's connected with him. And I had been wondering if Tohr was the one Xcor was related to so squealed when that part came up since that will create HUGE drama down the road.Bitty-adored her. Those investigating humans-didn't get very attached to anyone. Will try harder on reread now that I know one is Manny's sibling.Lassiter is growing on me. But what are they supposed to do without the Scribe Virgin? Can a deity just up and disappear herself? And who will this successor be? (Cowers at the thought of Lassiter.)

After reading this book, we were amazed at just how many solutions are available for health and energy issues using wholesome, natural ingredients or involve a change in lifestyle or choices. We recommend this addition to your home's reference shelf. It's a book you will refer to again and again.

This is a wonderful book! It offers information and options, particularly when/where modern western medicine falls short (something that is happening too often these days, particularly with regard to transgenic GMOs). I read this book quite thoroughly when I first got it and have referred to it constantly through the years. Recently I gave my personal copy away to a friend in need and so purchased another copy for our household. I thought it was about time I came online and mentioned my feelings to other interested shoppers. This book has helped me enormously and I highly recommend it! 5-Stars, without reservation.

Most importantly realize this book was published in 1996. Therefore the resources cited might have changed or no longer exist. The author does a good job of simplifying the basic concepts of Asian medicine and how it has evolved over thousands of years. My only wish was that more common ailments were not targeted. The book itself was a quick, easy read and I must say I feel I have a better understanding of Asian medicine and the price was cheap.

I am very happy to have this book...there is so much to learn from the ancient teachings of CHINESE way of body balancing and use of HERBS. NOT ALL HERBS ARE GOOD FOR everyone..it all depends on your body type...every thing is toxic....lol...too many of the western world practitioners over use and have overdosed on many herbs that are good for each person's needs.I think it is fortunate for this information by LETHA HADADY....lol..maybe a reincarnated chinese herb master from China...

I gonfor acupuncture and this book helps me understand

I like this book a lot.It touches many areas of Asian healing methodologies. Language is simple and clear. Good book for the beginner. I am sure that people with degrees in the subject or advanced knowledge on the topic wil find it basic. Use is as a reference material.

I am enjoying this book much! I am interested in learning about teas, combining food and herbs and the like. This bookwell written and the author puts in a bit of history to keep it interesting.

While I enjoyed both the book and the audio, the overall book seemed less developed than the past three on Kolt Raynor. In some ways the action was non-stop but at the same time, there were sequences which could have added to the story that were glossed over. For instance, it was never explained how the North Korean that Kolt was sent to rescue had as much specific information about the nukes and missile sites. In a country where secrecy and paranoia are practically a religion, this would have helped create additional depth. The two themes concerning Hawk and the combining of the unit with ST6 were sometimes covered well and at others sketchy. However, I did enjoy the book and hope his next is better written.

As long as we waited for this book to come out it seems poorly written. A couple more scrubs through the editor may have made some incoherent parts better. The story, really a very short plot. Almost played out like a bad action movie. Suit case nukes threaten the pacific fleet and kolt raynor, the squadron commander has to get the guy who may know something about them. Just seemed thin and less developed than past books. The real action in this book was glossed over. Could there not have been a hundred more pages on the SEALS, or the extraction or the actual resolve of the over arching plot? Nah, 4Pages here and there about one characters unimportant thoughts. Hope for a better plot next time

Great book! This series continues with Racer doing his own thing again this time trying to rescue a North Korean who has information on nukes that have targeted on our ships and West coast. I'm happy to see Hawk, Slap and Digger back on this adventure. There is so much action and different scenes taking place that to describe them all would take too much time, I highly recommend you read these books in order to get a feel for all the characters.

As usual this is another excellent book. In an effort to help improve the series I would like to focus on two issues that drive me nuts. The first is the one needles dialog and sometimes repetitive detail about what some one is wearing or seeing. The only benefit is I get to skip pages. The other thing is the poor editing for timeline. As one example the Korean with the teletype. The description of having to dust it off not having been used in years when in fact it was the third message sent from that machine in a sort time. Someone wasn't doing there job. This happens other times in the book. It's like someone won't take the time for a final read to insure flow. A similar timeline issue on the chopper.

Fury certainly knows how to spin a tale. His books are nearly nonstop action. However, that being said, Dalton forgets who his audience is.I'm a 20 year military vet, and even i can't understand huge portions of the book. Dalton seems to assume that his readers consist of Seals or Delta. He uses language that only they would understand, with absolutely no explanation given to the average reader.Dalton, if you truly want to be a successful author, LEARN and understand who your readers are.

Dalton Fury [nom de plume] delivers again a fast paced powerful story that is both hard to put down but rather uncomfortable in that it portrays a world that the mass media chooses to ignore. It makes one appreciate the tier one men and women who are fighting for us in the shadows.I found it left me as always in admiration of our warriors and disgusted with our politicos in and out of the military who seek only to advance their careers. Be in no doubt this is a true action novel with I presume more truth than fiction.

Like everything else he writes... personally I'd give it a 4.5 because it's not as good as the first three but still great. It's sad he passed away. I hope he has a friend who can take over who is just as creative who can write just as good as him.R.I.P. Dalton Fury

Absolutely outrageous intensity; well developed story board and character development, mesmerized writing. The best of all of Fury's books (so far).Welcome to the big leagues; on par with 'The Gray Man' series by Mark Greaney.

#801 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The pictures in this book are great and bright.

My 16 month old loves this book; the small size is great for her little hands. My only negative comment is that some of the names of the animal are very technical. One example: "Terrapin" instead of being general and calling the animal a TURTLE. My baby can't read yet, so I just call it a turtle so this isn't a big deal right now.

The Priddy board books are top notch choices for an infant/toddler's first books. They're sturdy, provided a lot of interest, and cover a good range of topics. First 100 Words is probably the most common point of entry for many in this series (and probably the best).First 100 Animals isn't bad by any means. However, across 106 entries it duplicates a few animals. There are three entries for owl with one distinguished by name (snowy owl - so I allow them this one) but the other two left without clarification. I'll even allow them the entries where the young version of the animal has a different name (puppy for dog, kitten for cat, etc.). In the case of the Lion entry one is make while the other is female (with no indication to the reader). Then there's two undistinguished entries for penguin (different pictures, but no other notes).Overall I'd recommend the First 100 series highly, but there's also plenty to nitpick.

The book we received doesn't look exactly like the one pictured (with a blue cover) but, that doesn't detract from the fact that it's a good, sturdy book for children. Some of the animals repeat within the book so it's not truly 100 animals. Also, for some of the animals, the book shows a close up, cropped picture instead of a full body picture which we don't feel is so great. For example, the picture of a squirrel shows the head, arms and partial body but not the bushy tail that a squirrel is known for and that would help a child identify the animal in real life.

I love this series, and this book is great and separates out the animals by category (pets, farm, regional). I'm only giving it 4 stars instead of 5, because the one I have, the cover is different hues of blue and is not as attractive to my toddler. The original (First 100 Words) he grabs all the time, but this one stays behind a lot, and I think due to the cover's colors being subdued. However, the inside is just as bright as expected.A few mentioned it was "small," but I think its the perfect size for a toddler. Since I already had one of this series, I knew what to expect. Its about size of an adult hand, slightly larger maybe. Nice thick cardboard pages, easy for toddler to flip through.

My daughter loves these books, this one is her favorite. I purchased this book for my daughter when she was around 7 months old, she loved it then and loves in now at 1.5 years old. She loves pointing to the pictures and saying what they are. I often see her flipping through the pages with our dog. I would recommend this book for infants/toddlers.

My one year old loves this book. He loves looking at real (not cartoon) pictures of animals and making the animal sounds. This book is a great size as well. I bought it to be a "to go" book...one to throw in the diaper bag for him to look at in the car, at restaurants, while waiting at the doctor, etc. We enjoy the bigger versions of the "First 100" books as well, but definitely prefer the size of this one to be taken along with us.

The book itself is very sturdy and well made. I have bought several of these first 100 books in the series and although I think they are still a bit too advanced for my daughter (she's around a year), right now she enjoys looking at the pictures and colors. I imagine as she gets older her interest and focus will shift more to the words themselves.

I give this book a big 5 stars. I bought this book for my 16 month old son who is just beginning to learn his animals. I wanted a great picture book to teach him and this one is wonderful!Pros: Great colorful pictures!Great learning tool for toddlers. The book itself is large making it an easy page turner for chubby little fingers. It's a board book so it might survive my destructive toddler.Cons: Too many animals that are not suitable to teach a younger child (think toddler-4 years old). There are animals like meerkat, orangutan, cockroach, and platypus. I wish they would have stuck with more "basic" animals geared towards smaller kids.Overall: Love this book and would recommend. The age on this book does say 0+ so I just wish there weren't so many strange animals for young kids who are just learning the basics.
