Having read the author's shorter pieces in various anthologies (and taught her essay browngirlworld in multiple classes), I was very excited about this book. While parts were absolutely beautiful, I found it disappointing overall. It reads like an MFA thesis that was rushed together from individual essays (some old, some new, of varying quality) in order to meet a deadline. It's not the varied, fragmented style that is a problem --when done with care and attention, such "nontraditional" narratives can be powerful and engaging. What (mostly) ruined this book for me was the clear evidence that it had not been written or even edited as a book length memoir. Several descriptions were repeated word for word in multiple sections, clearly marking standalone essays that had been written at different times (likely for different workshops). While an MFA essay collection can be a fine starting point for a memoir, it is not the same as a finished book. It would have been nice to see what this obviously talented author could have done if she had taken her source material through one more rewrite. Hopefully she will some day (Memoir Volume 2?), but based on what I read here I will wait to check it out of the library rather than buying it.

Even as a straight cis man I found myself drawn into the world this book paints of Toronto in the late 90's.

Leah Lakshmi has SO much to share with the world. This book is so powerful and valuable. I couldn't put it down. So glad that I get to share space in this world with such a wonderful human being.

A full body healing

I usually read non-fiction a couple chapters at a time between inhaling fiction. I’m not really sure why, but I do.In this case I inhaled this book.Leah’s writing is poetic and impactful. Her details, like knowing the price of food items and the cheapest meal she could make to literally survive off of, had a way of crawling into me and putting me beside her. Her journey from being a brown girl in the US with a white mother, to seeking out POC, to finding her identity--in Canada after years of struggle--was heartbreaking and beautiful, told in a voice that flowed beautifully from storytelling to a poetic narrative. It was a perfect balance when she spoke of things like abuse, poverty, and racism.I think my favorite part of her memoir was her appetite for reading from a young age (taught to her by her mother) and how she discussed books from different parts of her life, along with libraries, and bookstores that were significant.This is certainly a book I’d recommend even to readers who aren’t huge fans of non-fiction because the voice is so wonderful it reads almost like fiction.

A memoir with an explosive momentum that in no way diminishes the layered resonances of the author's life.

It would have been helpful if they had mentioned that this was for the original Print Shop, 12 years ago. I was expecting a book on the current, 2012 Print Shop 3.0 Delux. Not sure why Print shop would start using the same numbers over again. Book is worthless.

It was not helpful for creating a calendar (the reason I bought it) I knew I was in trouble when the first page displayed was not what I had on my computer.....so none of the instructions helped me....I am still struggling on trying to figure things out with the calendar.

Unfortunately I ordered the wrong book. What I needed was The Print Shop for Version 3.5 Professional. Is there such a book. If so I would like to order it.Thank you.John Emery

Print Shop is fun and easy to use, but this book gives you some neat info (typical of Dummies books) that you probably won't learn just by trial and error. We use it a lot!

The book did not seem to be for Print Shop three and contained very few options. I found it very unhelpful.

This book is not for the older versions of Print Shop Deluxe. I have an older version (2.0) I thought I could get some help with this book. However, when I tried to find some help on some things I wanted to do all the instructions were completely different from my Version 2.0. From what I have been able to gather for reading the introduction I think this book probably starts at about Version 6.0 or higher. I think it's probably a very good book. Maybe someday I'll up-grade to 10.0 and then I'll have the book to help me!!

Nina Khrushcheva (great-granddaughter and look-a-like of you-know-who) and Jeffrey Taylor have asked and answered that question in their new book, "In Putin's Footsteps: Searching for the Soul of An Empire: Across Russia's Eleven Time Zones". The two take a journey across current-day Russia, beginning in the west and traveling east. They visited towns and cities and empty areas and have written a very sophisticated travel journal. surrounded by political and historical observations. (By the way, there's a map of their journey in the front of the book. It's actually not accurate as the authors visited other places not indicated on the map. The editor should check the map against the text before the book goes to press.)There are several themes to the book. One is the continued look at alterations in identity of Russian cities and people. Names of cities change on a whim as people come in and out of favor. What's the status of Vladimir Lenin? Depends on where you are in the country. While this was prevalent in the old Soviet Union, it continues to today. And while much of the book looks at "official" Russia, the authors include interviews with many of the people they meet. It's both a personal and professional account of their journey.Both Khrushcheva and Taylor are journalists. I've seen Khrushcheva on TV here, trying to explain Russia and the ex-Soviet Union. Taylor lives in Moscow with his Russian wife. Both are good writers and very good questioners and observers. And there's a lot to ask and observe in Russia. They've written a very good book which should interest armchair historians and politics junkies alike.

This is a very interesting travelogue and commentary that does a good job of presenting the whole scope of Russia, and not just the Moscow area we're familiar with - or the areas closest to Europe.I had no real concrete idea - or I knew, but it wasn't relatable - that some of the isolated cities in the far east of Russia have hundreds of thousands of residents, and the scope is huge. It's really no different than California from DC, but for some reason we have a conventional view that Russia is big and empty and of course that's not true. Also, it showed the economies that exist outside our knowledge - Russia and China share a huge border which is both conflict and some economic cooperation.It's no wonder that the Russians are more nostalgic for Stalin than Yeltsin - why wouldn't they be? We don't have memorials to Jimmy Carter (even though he tried to tell us what we needed to hear) and focus on the false promises of Reagan. It's no different - except of course Stalin was responsible for crimes against his own people. So on that score, we have a little moral high ground (some anyway).It also makes sense that in this country's vast scope, they would expect more standing for thier nation. They are bigger than the US, have more natural resources, and theoretically more future potential. So that feeling comes through, even though in the present day these citizens seem willing to subjugate themselves to the state in a way we wouldn't tolerate here (though we do that too, without much prodding).So I felt like I learned a lot about how the current Russia sees itself in the world, but also the vast scope of average life in everyday that sprawls so far. It's not "Moscow and an uninhabited stretch of Siberia," at all - it's a vast country of people with a history of major influence. That all came across in this book without feeling preached too about one opinion or another - it felt objective, dramatic, visual, and sprawling.

I love these sprawling narratives that combine travel, history, and politics. Dervla Murphy, Paul Theroux, Eric Newby come to mind, and in the case of Russia/Soviet Union, Hedrick Smith wrote the book that all others aim to equal. Jeffrey Tayler has been writing about Russia for a while now and I always enjoy his essays and books. But it's been twenty years since he wrote Siberian Dawn: A Journey Across the New Russia, and a lot has changed, much of it centered around the man who has been the Russian leader since then, Vladimir Putin.Tayler was accompanied by Nina Khrushcheva, the great-granddaughter of Nikita Khrushchev, and an academic in New York. It's an enjoyable journey (for readers, perhaps not so enjoyable for the participants who had to put up with a lot of Russian bureaucracy and indifferent customer service) that stretches across the continent, stopping to take in the sights, visit museums, do interviews, chat with locals, and muse about history.A revealing inside look at what Russians think about their leader, about their country, and about their past and future.

I debated about whether to get this because, although the subject sounded interesting to me, I thought it might be more textbookish than what I wanted. Happily, it wasn't. It's a very readable book that delves into the minds of thoughts of Russian citizens -- ordinary people like you and me. You see a different and new side of Russia from this perspective. I found it very enjoyable. I like reading about the lives of citizens of countries that are "mysterious" and usually quite different from USA life. If you fall into that camp, count this book as another to put on your reading list.

About the Author

Dr. Binh Nhu Ngo is the Director of the Vietnamese Language Program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University and has been teaching Vietnamese there since 1992. He was born and educated in Hanoi and earned his Ph.D. in linguistics from the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. He has taught Vietnamese and linguistics at Moscow University, and since 1992 he has taught at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) and at a number of universities and colleges in the United States. He was the Vice-President of the Council of Teachers of Southeast Asian Languages (COTSEAL) and represents Harvard University at the Group of Universities for the Advancement of Vietnamese Abroad (GUAVA), whose Chair he has been since 2003. Perfect for those that prefer one over another. In this book you get 2 full sets of 21 beautiful, detailed images. You can color again or share with a friend. The pictures all have clean lines. Grayscale images are not too dark, which enables them to be colored much easier and allows the detail to come through. There is a thin frame line and a small, white space border surrounding all illustrations to aid in easy removal with a pen knife, for coloring or framing.The covers are very pretty and the back shows smaller samples of the pictures included in this book. The illustrations are gorgeous and even though detailed, they have very few intricate areas, making this book fairly easy for those with vision and dexterity issues. Paper is medium weight, which is typical of most adult coloring books. You can use most coloring medium on it. If using markers, use some blotter pages to prevent bleed through to the next page. Use water sparingly to prevent paper buckling or damage when using wet medium like watercolors. Some wrinkling with water application is normal.Alena includes information about herself, copyright, social media links and several thumbnail images of the covers of her other books.

Love this Christmas theme coloring book. This book is designed to capture the spirit of Christmas. I love that the designs are so varied – there are Santas, snowflakes, children, fireplace, Christmas trees, elves, animals, owi, stockings, gifts, reindeers. I love the fact that there are 2 copies of each image so that you can go a different direction artistically. The images are printed on one side of the pages only, to give the best coloring experience. Coloring pencils work extremely well with this paper.

This is the third book about museology that I've read lately (and reviewed here). The others are "Dry Storeroom #1" by Richard Fortey, about the Natural History Museum in London, and "Curators" by Lance Grande, about the Field Museum in Chicago. This book is about a museum that no longer exists--the Jenks Museum at Brown University, an idiosyncratic omnium-gatherum created as a personal project by zoologist John Whipple Potter Jenks. The museum scarcely outlasted its curator. Though little trace remains of it today, historian Steven Lubar (yes, of Brown) uses it as a jumping-off point for discussions of why museums exist, what they are good for and what they are good and not so good at doing, and how their missions have and have not changed since Jenks' time. He provides deep and insightful, and utterly candid, commentary on the surprisingly diverse views of these issues within the profession of museology. Unlike Fortey and Grande, he includes art, technology and archeology collections in his discussions. There is a lively discussion going on right now about whether museums have gone too far at adopting high-tech tools to engage young visitors; you will find an up-to-date review of the debate in these pages. It is a curious fact that a book about a museum that no longer exists actually has more to teach the lay reader than either of the two current books about major museums that are alive and well. But all three books have their charms; if you are interested in the why, how and wherefore of museums, by all means read all three.While I was reading this book, the business section of the New York Times published an article headlined "A collector's dream: creating your own museum as a legacy" (September 30, 2017). The kind of very personal vision that drove Jenks survives, and the museums that may eventuate will in good time face the same test as the Jenks museum: once the visionary who created them is gone, will anybody care? Will anybody come?

The book is exactly what it claims to be - a brief recap of the significant periods, events, and people of US history. None of the sections tell you the whole story, but there are some decent references for further reading, and I found that browsing Wikipedia and a world map while reading helped me fill in some gaps. Some content gets repeated (especially in the timelines of wars, etc) and some sections are oddly short (for instance, the Tonkin Incident section doesn't actually describe what happened, although it was later discussed in a timeline), but those aren't major issues. I liked the references back and forth through history that show larger patterns, cycles, and causes, and I appreciate the sustained attention paid to systemic inequalities, especially for blacks and women, that have persisted through US history.This is my first Kindle book (I'm reading it on a mac) so maybe this is an issue of the medium, but I find the formatting pretty clunky, and the lack of photos, images, and maps is unfortunate.

Where else can you get an easy-to-read overview of 500 years of American history--from who really discovered America to how we elected our first black president--and have FUN reading it? I saw author Kenneth C. Davis interviewed on CNN and was mesmerized by what he had to say and how he said it. When they flashed his credentials on the screen as the author of this book, I bought it immediately. This isn't your high school or college history textbook. This one is so much fun you might even stay up past your bedtime reading it! Quite simply, read this book and you'll be quite literate when it comes to the big facts about our nation's past--whether you want to win at Trivial Pursuit, impress someone at a cocktail party or (most important) develop an understanding of why and how things happened THEN that deeply impact our NOW.

Love this book. I'm about halfway through it and I can tell you that it's highly readable, entertaining and captivating. While sharing what some would think are arcane facts about our history, author Kenneth C. Davis presents the human part of our history so we get a much clearer picture of how we've arrived at this point. (NOTE: We're not always heroes in this life--we're just humans doing the best we can do at the time. This is a marvelous book and I highly recommend it!

I love history, but I didn't feel like me were always told the truth. First off who was around to tell Washington chop down the tree, how did we know it was a cherry tree. I feel like history has been misleading all my life. This book is wonderful I wish I had this book in school discussion we would had. I you are on the fence about purchasing this book, please go on you will not be disappointed.

Item received on 2/25/17 by mail. a Very interesting book, who tells us more detailed pieces from the American history than you ought to learn, often with several boring facts on school.Kenneth C. Davis gives a very realistic picture of what was going good and wrong during the American history, and the influence in their concerned world.Again, the right literature that fills in the gaps of what we really didn't know.

If you're like me and don't remember much from American history classes in school, this book will help! I always hated history and didn't retain much of what I learned, so now that I'm trying to teach my kids I needed a refresher course. This book hits the highlights of history and does a great job of explaining everything. I feel like I've learned a lot.

Not a scholarly exposition of US history, but a fun way to get the essential facts. Great for youth and adults who are bored with the thought of learning history. If all US citizens knew history even at this level, our choice of public officials would be very different.

Obviously the title of the book is a misnomer. It is clear from the start that it is concerned only with American history. The goal of the author is to make history interesting so that people who have dosed off in history class can get interested again. In that regard, the book is successful. There is a strong narrative flow and a suspense that keeps you turning pages, despite the awkwardness of the question-answer format and the annoying repetitiveness. Pluses include the "voices", excerpts and quotes from historical figures and documents, as well as a long list of book recommendations for those wishing to delve further.The book suffers from major flaws, however: in many places, it is shallow as well as selective in its choice of topics. Much of the book boils down to a narration of "facts" without much analysis, the kind of information you could get reading headlines in news archives. While there is an argument for not making the book excessively long, much space is wasted by those "timelines" of every war and crisis that serve no purpose other than to bore the reader to death.Secondly, the selective choice of topics is most visibly felt in the area of foreign policy. Much of the outside world is disregarded until it makes itself felt (e.g., during a war). In this, the book is symptomatic of isolationist American culture as a whole, where people will look up a country only after we have troops there. That tendency to ignore the outside world is precisely why American foreign policy is in shambles. If a book that proclaims the wish to re-educate Americans about history is woefully inadequate when it comes to describing America's relation with the outside world, then there is no hope!As an example, I choose the Middle East. That region, of vital importance to the US, recipient of the bulk of US foreign aid, heavy trade and influence, and location of most of America's recent wars, is brought up in only a few places. A few pages are devoted to it in connection with the Arab Oil Embargo, without much explanation of the background - why the Arabs and Israel were fighting. There is no real discussion of the question of Palestine, the deep injustice most people in the Arab world feel about that issue, and the role of the US in creating and perpetuating that injustice. The US role in the failed Peace Process of the 1990s is completely absent. The book talks about the two Iraq wars, again without much background as to the whys. There is no mention of how, throughout the 1990s, Dick Cheney and others in the subsequent Bush administration were lobbying Clinton for an Iraq War. There is no mention of the Caspian Oil pipeline, again a desire since the 1990s and one of the major reasons for a war in Afghanistan.Finally, the book is more or less a "names and dates" book. Too many pages are devoted to descriptions of presidents and their campaigns, and too few devoted to describing how ordinary Americans lived. A much better read is Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States", but even that has gaping holes in foreign issues, especially when it relates to the Middle East.
