Review
Leonel is one of the foremost Anglican liturgists and those who heard him lecture at his beloved Seabury-Western Seminary in Evanston, Illinois are richly blessed. Anyone wanting to know the origin and the raison d'être of any action or symbol will find their answer here. (Church of Ireland Education)This volume is a companion to the late Howard E. Galley's The Ceremonies of the Eucharist: A Guide to Celebration. . . . Galley's work is virtually essential for anyone involved in planning and executing eucharistic and baptismal liturgies. Professor Mitchell has done an equal service in writing this companion volume, which he dedicates to Galley. . . . Like Galley, Mitchell explains the whys and wherefores of his directions and suggestions, which allows the reader to evaluate, select and (important in a parish context) explain the reasons for celebrating in a particular way. . . . The greatest value of the book is the pastoral wisdom Mitchell offers. For all his historical knowledge, what he says is always directed to the present day; despite the fact that his career centered in a seminary chapel, his concern here is always with the diverse range of Episcopal parishes. (Anglican Theological Review)In this instant age we find ourselves in, we find it more familiar to mark what we do by the yardstick called experience rather than [by] substance and meaning. For ALL Christians, these days and the events that surround them are the heart of what it means to be a Christian. These are the ‘high holy days,' and this book will help congregations, worship leaders and individual members rediscover what this faith tradition is all about. (Richard B. Gilbert, Executive Director of The World Pastoral Care Center)

This book lays out a very detailed plan for all aspects of services during Lent, Holy Week, Easter day and the Easter season. As an altar guild directress, I have found it invaluable in answering my questions about ceremony. One goes along Sunday after Sunday throughout the year, and then up come these seasons and there's always a nagging "How do we...?" question that comes up in my mind, even though I thought I made meticulous notes the previous year. But, this is more than just a guide that can assist an altar guild; it covers every aspect of the services and would be most helpful to anyone who is involved with the ceremonies of the church. Note that it is written as a guide to ceremony in the Episcopal Church, so it would not be helpful to everyone, though it might make for interesting reading to see how it's done in Episcopal churches. It is a companion to the work done by the wonderful Howard Galley, whose name is spoken in reverent tones by many of us who love traditional liturgy and who love to have things done 'the right way.' Of course, I realize that Jesus Christ did not author this, nor would I elevate it to the status of works inspired by God, such as the Holy Bible. And I do know that God does not care how we worship. God just wants us to show up. But, nevertheless, when one is doing something, it's nice to have a guide to tell you the 'right' way, and then one can deviate from that if one so chooses. Me, I don't much like the deviations, but maybe that's because I'm old! And maybe I'm lazy, and just want someone to tell me what to do so I don't have to figure it all out by myself.
This book provides step-by-step guides to the liturgical services of Lent, Holy Week and Easter. It is a companion to Howard Galley's excellent resource "Ceremonies of the Eucharist." Mitchell writes for anyone involved in leading, planning and participating in the services in Episcopal/Anglican churches. The book assumes a medium-size parish with typical resources; however, the guidelines are useful for churches of any size and that meet in any type of facility, as the instructions can be modified to suit tastes and resources.Like Galley, Mitchell conveys the attitude that if liturgy is worth doing then it is worth doing very well. His writing will help readers make the best of important services in the church year. For Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, & Holy Saturday), Easter Vigil and the Great Fifty Days of the Easter Season Mitchell offers detailed instructions. He includes optional details, history and theology behind the liturgy. The details will help churches start a service tradition like Maundy Thursday for the first time or improve current tradition.I recommend that Episcopal/Anglican leaders add this book to their libraries and refer to it when planning these services.
I would have preferred it to be the same size as the others in the series as it doesn't fit the shelf easily.
it is an invaluable aid to planning and being ready for Lent, Holy, Week, and beyond in both large and small parishes. It is thorough and explicit and a complete must for every liturgical planner for these liturgies.
I thought i was getting something different, this is how to do a Lent service, i was wanting the meaning of the Lent Service
