I'm writing this review about the 2008 updated edition. Before I travel, I love to read about the place I'll be going so I buy a lot of these travel books. I have the Puerto Rico version of Moon, Rough Guide, Insight and Fodors. While each of the books have their own virtues, this Lonely Planet book is the best one if you really want to learn a lot about the place you are going. It goes into much more detail about the history and descriptions of different places on the island than any of the others. If you just want a quick reference for restaurants and hotels then Fodors or Rough Guide is probably a better choice but Lonely planet is the best for helping to plan where you want to go and what you want to do before you get there.

We just came back from a 10 day trip to Puerto Rico (04/21 - 05/01, 2006) and we have to COMPLETELY disagree with the previous review. In fact, we were thinking about burning this LP copy. Don't get us wrong, we own several copies of LP for China, Eucador, South America, Guatamala, and etc. But we have serious reservation about recommending this one to anyone else. Here are some of the reasons:1. Several budget restarurants in Old San Juan no longer exist. They include St. Germain, Brenda's Cafe, and Los Amigos. It became very frustrating after going to several places and finding out 3/4 of them were closed.2. The same happened in Ponce, but for hotels. Two out of three hotels listed on pg. 166 (center of Ponce, by the Plaza las Delicias) were not there - they simply don't exist.3. Now, telephone numbers. we can't say that all of them in the guidebook are wrong, but the ones we called are either disconnected or a wrong number. This goes for the UA Cinema 150 in San Juan (pg. 105), which we found out at a Holiday Inn in Isla Verde that it was torn down a year ago. Or the Museo de Art Contemporaneo de Puerto Rico, which doesn't open on Monday, as the guidebook indicated - in fact, no museum in San Juan opens on Monday!4. We can list more annoyances, like the lack of good maps for most of the cities described, or bad driving directions...We are not saying that this book has no value, but when you finds enough inconsistencies and errors, you has to wonder what else is wrong, and more importantly, whether or not you can actually trust and rely on the guidebook. And in that respect, our answer is NO.The take home message: carefully compare this book with another. If you do decide to buy this LP, always call the places ahead to see 1) if it still exist, and 2) if the number is correct.On a side note, at one point during the trip, we thought that we would probably have had more luck with a coqui as our guide than using this guidebook! =)

These guides are never completely correct and several places listed in this guide have already closed. However, it was still a good way to figure out what we wanted to do while in Puerto Rico even if it was not as accurate and up to date at Lonely Planet guidebooks often are.

I trust Lonely Planet, and it's pretty much the only travel guide I use. However, this one is a little outdated. The newest guide for Puerto Rico is out now, but wasn't available at the time when I went to Puerto Rico. I made all my reservations based on their recommendations, and I was not thrilled w/ the results. Casa Cabuy in El Yunque was the only recommendation that really shined, every other place was funky and expensive. Maybe the newest one is better.

This is a great book for an overview but many details are not valid any more. I would not rely on this book as your only source of info. Do your homework online .

Dan Story has done a remarkable job of laying out the case for defending the Faith and explaining how Christians can use evidence to instill confidence in other Christians and answer tough questions from non-Christians. Dan is a very good writer and makes hard things understandable and useful. I especially love the price of the book. It works beautifully for people on a budget.

Some people recommend Lee Strobel's writings ('A case for...' series) for beginners and people new to Christian apologetics. However, though Strobel is good, I recommend Dan Story. While Lee lines up experts to lay out his case, Dan has gone through all the information and lays it out in a very easy and concise presentation.

This is about my favorite book on Biblical Apologetics, or how to defend the claims of historic Christianity. Very easy to read, and very well researched and footnoted. I highly recommend it.

Dan Story does a fine job of sharing tips on how to share your story and your faith. It was excellent that he showed in the beginning when and when not to use Apologetics. Chapter 4 on Offensive apologetics was fatastic and has affected my approach in sharing with many people.He could have perhaps said more on the use of the Gifts of the sprit while witnessing (I have found healing and the word of knowlege to be very effective in such cases) but that was not perhaps the intention of his book and I realize that some of those who believe the gifts kicked the bucket with the original apostles might not have read all that he had to say.Good book. Get it and Put it into practice.

It is unfortunate that an apologetic work lauded by one of my faves, RC Sproul, should fare so poorly at providing an effective grounding in apologetics. Story misconstrues the presuppositional method so completely, and provides no supporting material or footnote for his fallacious interpretation of the presuppositional approach, that it appears he has never read Cornelius Van Til. He criticizes presuppositionalism as assuming that "the Holy Spirit is unable to minister and convict through Christian evidences" (as if there were any other kind of evidence). Van Til and (even more strenuously) Greg Bahnsen flatly deny this and reveal how evidences can be successfully used in an apologetic. Further, Story claims presuppositionalism "limits God to working only subjectively in the lives of believers." ?? I can not make sense of this, as I can not fathom any other way in which God works in the lives of individuals since his work in mine is not the same as it is in anyone elses -other than in the generic sense of assuring salvation. But soteriology cannot be his difference with presuppositionalism since presuppositionalism does not extend itself (any more than evidentialism does) to formulate a soteriological position other than to rely on that posited by the Reformers (even Sproul respects Van Til as a theologian!). Yet he goes on to say on page 151 in the chapter "How Do We Know Miracles Really Happen?" "...the answer to the question of whether the Bible miracles are true alone determines the authenticity of the Christian faith?". Really? What about the Bible being true? Or the gospel being true? He states "...the incarnation and the resurrection of Jesus Christ encompass the entire fabric of Christianity. If these two ...miracles did not occur, Christianity crumbles." But one might ask, if moral absolutes do not stand, does Christianity? If the laws of logic lapse, does Christianity hold together? If the uniformity of nature does not exist, as a worldview of chance matter in motion must dictate, can Christianity? Arguing the way Story proposes is defeated simply with "Oh, I believe in the incarnation and the resurrection. I just think there are natural explanations for them." Story's evidentialist approach leaves him down in the mud with the unbeliever working brick by brick to build a Christian house. I have to conclude that this is book is good evidence....that evidentialism is not the strongest apologetic for the faith. It's not even a good one. Can God work through evidentialism? Can he work even through our fumbling errors? Of course. But shoot for higher. Try "Always Ready" by Greg Bahnsen instead and if you feel gutsy go straight to "Defending the Faith" by Van Til. It appears Story never did.

This is another travel guide spin-off from Lonely Planet. Culture Trails presents trips centered on cultural experiences worldwide, from Copenhagen to Taiwan, Budapest to the US. The book creates trips around themes of literature, art, architecture, music, theater, dance, festivals, TV, film, and even comics. Each themed trip lists six to eight places to visit. So, for example, the Gothic Tasmania trip in Australia lists seven places: the Dark Mofo festival, the amusement park Mona, Battery Point, Mt. Wellington, Cascades Female Factory (a historical site where women convicts were once incarcerated), Cascade Brewery, and Port Arthur. Each place has at least one picture accompanying its description. And afterward, there is a very short section listing two places to stay, two places to eat, and two celebrations in the area.Some of my favorite itineraries are Copenhagen's Design Culture, Finnish Sauna Culture, Art Nouveau Budapest, Naoshima's Art Islands, and Taiwanese Folklore Reimagined.Even though some countries have more than one themed trip, the book never feels repetitive. Still, Culture Trails is definitely meant as inspiration only, since you can't take these trips based on the info presented here alone. Regardless, it's a fun little book to page through, and I discovered a few places I'd like to visit at some point in the future.

The best travel book I've bought in years. It has already paid for itself twice over. Fantastic ideas, tips, themes, itineraries, etc. everything you'd expect from LP with something great for absolutely every type of traveler and season. Great, great book!

Excellent and useful book to plan outings!

I am a big fan of the lonely planet travel books. They always give a unique and distinctive look at the regions they’re spotlighting. In this case the book Culture Trails takes us around the world and exposes the soul of the locals. The books starts in Australia and ends in the United States.The aboriginal cultures are explored in Northern Australia. You can visit the Injalak Arts & Crafts center where you can sit under the shade of a eucalyptus while the locals dye pandanus fronds for weaving. Also, in Australia but in another region you can visit Power’s Lookout Reserve. It’s here you’ll find out about the life and times of the infamous Ned Kelly the accomplished cattle rustler and horse thief.Brussles has a quirky underbelly and is the center of the European comic-strip movement that started with Tin-Tin and can still be found in the galleries and streets.The book features Salman Rushdie’s Bombay it’s most famous and controversial son. Many of his books feature landmarks and locals that you can seek out on tours around the city streets.In Jamaica you can retrace the life and career of Bob Marley, the reggae legend where his legend lives on.Each section is ended with an informational block which tells where to stay, eat & drink and dates of celebrations held during the year. There is not a lot of listings – but those included have the phone contact and sometimes the addresses.This is a wonderful collection of travel information with which to plan your next trip. If you’re just an armchair traveler this book goes best with bourbon on the rocks.

What if you had unlimited money and time to travel, and just didn't know of a good way to spend your riches? Or, if you are like me, you have neither the money nor the time, but have a great imagination? Either way, this book will take you everywhere without leaving your living room. It describes 52 trips of a lifetime (one per week?) and is written by people on the ground in the places they're writing about. They can tell you what you must see versus stuff better left in a tour book and not worth wasting your precious vacation time.As I said, I love this book for the dream trips it helps me travel. However, it is even more helpful if you actually have time and money to go on a trip. It will show you 52 of the coolest trips you can take without having to resort to a guided tour. (Confession: I have been on those bus tours to see places you just can't get tickets to visit any other way. It's not to my taste, and I'd rather wander with a book like this even if I saved time and money on a bus.) At any rate, it's a wonderful gift to give to someone you'd love to see the world with. Even if you are giving the gift to yourself, as I did.

Culture Trails, by the Lonely Planet team, seems to be a project in need of a market. The photos aren't nice enough to make this a tabletop book. The paper quality makes it iffy as a gift. The shallowness of the coverage of the 52 locations featured makes it, well, of little worth from a travel guide perspective.So I've visited some of these sites. Mumbai, Auckland, DC, Adelaide, and Florence. This book doesn't, or can't in the space provided, do justice to the features that characterize these world-class locations. You want to know more about your pending visit to Cuba? You'll need to refer to other references (including one produced by Lonely Planet, Lonely Planet Cuba. I really can't even tell you that this book will spark your interest in traveling, given the sparseness of the descriptions. For each location, out of hundreds if not thousands of potential lodging and eating establishments, only 2-3 are featured for each site. You have to ask yourself... did Lonely Planet put this book together with fees provided by those few vendors?And although the natural history of many of the places featured is fabulous, the focus here is on human culture (as noted in the title).

The previous reviewer notes that Italian manuscripts in the earier part of the century were rather lackluster, and I tend to agree, with the addition that the aesthetic was very different from Northern Europe. The glory of France was in the Book of Hours, the pride of England was in the Grand Psalter, and Italy and Spain seemed to revel in the Sumptuous Choirbook. These were meant to be seen at a distance, and possessed a glory of design, rather than detail. They often remain in their original churches or local museums, and do not reproduce as exquisitely as smaller prayerbooks. In the later 15th and 16th centuries, the taste and expense showed greater predilection for private, highly detailed volumes that are almost unbelievably crafted even compared to the glories of Flanders and France. It might be noted that many of these supremely costly volumes had relatively few paintings, frequently only the Frontispieces. That is good from the standpoint of being able to see a lot of different things in one catalog. The workmanship here is magnificent, and emphasized by really good photography. The authors provide copious and scrupulously documented notes and the Introductions provide a nice foundation without reaching too extensive a length. I find the material a bit too rich to digest in large quantities, but adds interest: How many of these books could reasonably be afforded by anyone short of a Medici Prince? The French and Flemish catalogs usually have a range of quality, value, and provenance, but these are all from the top eschelon only. So enjoy the richest of the rich.

This book features plates and commentary regarding a exhibition of illuminated manuscripts from Italy that toured the US several years ago. Like most exhibition catalogs, it features essays about the general era as it pertains to the art, descriptions and histories of many of the items in the exhibit, and photographic reproductions of many of the best items in the exhibition. The editorial review pretty acurately describes the bare-bones contents, and so I won't repeat that worthy information here. Italian illumination prior to about 1450 is, in my opinion, lackluster. The French, Flemish, and English were doing a much better job of painting books. However, the examples presented in this book prove just how beautiful Italian illumination could be once the Italians hit their stride. The paintings and illuminations featured in this catalog range from pretty to exquisite to sublimely beautiful. This book has provided me with lots of inspiration in my own work as a modern-day book illuminator, and I highly recomend it to any other artist seeking inspriation in this genre.
