What a great fun book to read to kids, even a three year old loves it but more for 5 and over!
A curious, imaginative, young boy, who barely speaks as a child and isn’t like the all the other students, nor does he want to be, grows into one of the most genius minds that changes life as we know it. A celebration of Einstein’s curiosity and genius will pique the interest of any budding scientist. A must have book for every classroom and home of the precocious child. Why I Like This Book: An amazing way to bring the life and work of Albert Einstein alive to children. What a perfect introduction to the young reader about the famous physicist who never stopped questioning the world around him. The whimsical illustrations illuminate each page, and it shines a light on the underlying message the story shares about the value of the imagination and how that should be nourished and not crushed. An awakening of the senses and a fascinating read!
I had to read this book to write a biography on Einstein for my Literature in Childhood Education class. It was cheap enough to just buy it on Kindle instead of hunting down in the library. I didn't think much of the class itself, but this book surprised me. I learned facts about Einstein that were designed to appeal for children, but why wouldn't adults like to know silly facts like Einstein hated socks? I learned a lot of quirky things about the man and I got a perfect score on my assignment. I'm very happy. The illustrations are consistent with a children's book and parallel the story very well, it would be easy for children learning to read to follow along with this book. Buy it for yourself or your kid! It's good!
Seeing my 7 year old read this book was an experience I will never forget. He often feels alone due to his gifted mind. He didn't talk until he turned 3 and was misdiagnosed with ASD and Asbergers. Once he started talking he interrupted his teacher with questions and was very exited to learn new things and explore solutions to his ideas. His kindergarten behavior was not asynchronous to his intelligence. which showed up during his ADHD eval. His IQ is in the top 2% on the charts which is great but the real lesson to learn in this book is to be yourself no matter how that looks to the rest of the world!
Amazing book! My 6 year old devoured this book in about 20 mins. He AND myself absolutely loved learning more about Einstein. The story is easy to read and it tells kids that it is ok to be different and in some aspect it is a advantageous feature to have and encourage them to never stop dreaming in achieving your wildest dreams. He read this book a couple of time and will revisit again the rest of his childhood, I hope!
This book has become a favorite in our house! While this book is recommended for the 6-9 age group, my 4 year old gets a kick out of it. She doesn't yet understand some of the scientific words and concepts (i.e. atoms, magnetism, etc;) but that doesn't stop her from enjoying the story. What I love about this book is that it's based on a real person and true events - finally, a children's book that's not based on farm animals! It starts out by detailing how little Albert didn't talk much when he was a child, was mischievous in class and getting in trouble and didn't relate well to the other children. It then goes into his career - how he wanted to be a teacher but ended up working in a government office. Eventually, the book talks about Albert's ideas and recognition. You also learn about Albert's quirks - how he didn't like to wear socks, enjoyed ice cream and the violin and liked to wear the same baggy clothes. Unfortunately, it does talk about his smoking pipe which I had to explain to my daughter - I turned that into a lesson about how smoking is bad for you but it was something they used to do in Albert's time because they didn't know any better! The hardcover version is definitely sturdier but the new paperback version holds up well. I do wish that they didn't put the font in a red color on some pages - it's hard to see with the background color.
What makes this book so perfect is the collaboration between the author and the illustrator. The pictures match the text so well, and really capture the intensity and chaos in Albert Einstein's mind. I've read it a few times and love it.
Although this book is meant for older children, I read it to my 1.5yo and he was hooked! Obviously he doesn't understand many of the main concepts, but he knows who "Albert" is and recognizes him in other situations. And he sits quietly and listens to the entire book which does not happen very often. I wish the authors would do more books like this about other prominent people.
Lovely story and illustrations. I understand why it was nominated for a Newberry Award. Can't wait to give it to my grandson for his birthday. I made him an Explorer kit, including a compass and a magnifying glass to go with it. The fact that it is the story of a real boy means that my grandson will have an interest in Einstein firmly planted in his young mind and heart. I think it could lead to reading more about Einstein as he grows older. And it will be so much fun to help him explore the world around him like a little budding scientist/explorer.
